A INTRODUCTION

I RATIONALE FOR CHOOSING THE TOPIC

In the context of integration and globalization, English is playing anincreasingly important role in education, work, and international communication Asone of the core subjects in high school, English not only helps students improve theirlanguage skills but also opens up numerous opportunities in learning, careers, andcultural exchange However, to use English fluently, students need to possess a richvocabulary, as vocabulary is the foundation for developing language skills such aslistening, speaking, reading, and writing

In actual teaching practice, many students still face difficulties inremembering and effectively using English vocabulary Traditional learningmethods such as repeatedly copying new words, rote memorization using wordlists, and mechanical repetition often prove to be ineffective in the long run Thesemethods can easily cause boredom, reduce motivation, and lead to studentsforgetting vocabulary quickly, failing to apply it in real-life communication, andeventually developing a fear of English and losing confidence in using thelanguage

Faced with this situation, teachers need to adopt innovative teaching methods

to motivate and engage students in vocabulary learning In the era of Industry 4.0,integrating digital learning tools is a necessary and effective direction Among the

popular tools today, Quizlet stands out as a modern, user-friendly, and convenient

learning application, which is particularly suitable for high school students."

Quizlet is an online learning platform that allows teachers and students to

create, share, and practice vocabulary sets through flashcards, games, and diversequizzes With its intuitive interface, ease of use, and a variety of engaging learningmodes such as “Match”, “Gravity”, and “Learn”, Quizlet helps students remembervocabulary in a vivid, fast, and systematic way Notably, students can studyanytime, anywhere via smartphones or computers, which aligns with today’s trend

V INNOVATIVE ASPECTS OF THE PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE INITIATIVE

1 High Interactivity and Active Learning Methodology.

A new and outstanding feature of this initiative is the integration ofvocabulary teaching and learning through Quizlet, where both teachers andstudents can independently design lesson content according to the curriculum. This is something that many other AI applications have not yet fully addressed.Quizlet offers numerous interactive activities such as flashcard games, quizzes, and tests, enabling teachers and students not only to teach and learn passively butalso to engage actively in the teaching and learning process These activitiesencourage more active participation from both teachers and students, creating anenjoyable and accessible learning environment

2.Diverse and Flexible Technology Application

Quizlet is not just a simple vocabulary learning tool; it also integrates variousfeatures that allow teachers and students to create vocabulary lessons in differentforms, such as flashcards, quizzes, games, and challenges, to test vocabularyretention and understanding This sets it apart from many other AI applications.Other apps often focus primarily on theoretical lessons or lack sufficientinteractivity Quizlet offers flexibility, allowing students to learn anytime, anywhere, using mobile phones, tablets, or desktop computers Teachers candesign engaging, dynamic, and easy-to-understand vocabulary lessons that alignwith the curriculum at all levels No other AI application in the system can offersuch comprehensive support for all types of learners

3 Personalized Learning and Customization According to Students’ Needs

Quizlet allows students to create their own flashcards and vocabularylessons, enabling them to customize their learning methods according to their abilityand pace This creates a significant difference compared to many other AIapplications, where learning may be restricted by the pre-existing curriculum andcannot fully meet the individual needs of each student Quizlet is an open learningplatform that allows students to learn in their own unique and flexible way

4 Detailed Progress Tracking Feature

Trang 11

A standout feature of Quizlet is its ability to track and assess student progressthrough pre-designed quizzes and games The learning results are saved, and thesystem provides detailed statistics, helping students and teachers know what has beenlearned and reviewed, so they can adjust learning methods for better effectiveness.Other AI applications lack this feature or only provide a general evaluation, withoutdelving into the specifics of individual student progress.

5 Spaced Repetition Learning Method

Quizlet uses the spaced repetition method to help students retain vocabularylong-term This is a key factor that prevents students from quickly learning andforgetting, instead helping knowledge be reinforced and stored for the long term.Other AI applications may lack this method or, if present, do not optimize thescientific process of spaced repetition effectively

6 Social Learning and Community Connection

Quizlet creates a large learning community where students can share theirflashcards with friends or other learners around the world This promotescollaboration and connection in learning, allowing students to learn from oneanother and explore different ways of learning This is a strength compared toother AI applications, where students may learn independently without aconnection to a large learning community

7 Learning Through Real-World Context and Life Application

Unlike AI applications that teach vocabulary through simple memorization,Quizlet allows students to learn vocabulary through real-life situations The vocabularylearned is not only theoretical but can also be applied in practical communicationsituations, helping students use the vocabulary immediately in writing, speaking, oreveryday conversation This increases the practicality of the learning process, somethingthat other AI applications have not achieved effectively

8 No Need for Extensive Technical Knowledge

A prominent advantage of Quizlet is that students do not need extensive technicalknowledge to use it Quizlet has a simple, user-friendly interface, and is accessible

to students of all ages and technical levels This sets it apart from more complex

AI applications, which sometimes require students to have a certain level oftechnical knowledge in order to use them effectively

**Conclusion

The key innovations of this teaching experience (SKKN) when applying

Quizlet, compared to other AI applications, lie in its interactivity, flexibility, and high level of personalized learning Quizlet excels because it not only helps students learn vocabulary actively but also provides effective, accessible learning tools that cater to each student’s individual learning needs The

combination of modern learning methods and the community aspect within

Quizlet is a key strength, making this application an exceptional tool for learning

English vocabulary

Quizlet does not have the feature to automatically generate textbook content from the original text However, teachers and students can manually create flashcards or vocabulary lessons based on textbook content.

**NOTE

Quizlet does not automatically recognize and generate content from textbooks; instead, teachers and students need to manually input data or use pre-made flashcard sets for studying However, with this flexible feature,

Trang 12

teachers and students can easily create lessons from textbooks according to their learning needs.

Trang 13

B CONTENT OF THE INNOVATIVE EXPERIENCE INITIATIVE

I THEORETICAL BASIS OF THE INNOVATIVE EXPERIENCE INITIATIVE

Vocabulary plays a key role in shaping and developing learners' languageskills Effective teaching and learning of English vocabulary not only helpsstudents improve their four skills—listening, speaking, reading, and writing—butalso contributes to developing logical thinking, critical thinking abilities, andexpanding cultural knowledge However, in practice, teaching English vocabulary

in high schools today still faces many difficulties and limitations

The traditional method—note-taking, memorization, and doing exercises—

is still widely used but fails to generate interest, lacks interaction, and has littlepractical application Students frequently fall into a "learn and forget" cycle, where they cannot remember spelling, mispronounce words, or fail to use words

in specific contexts Many even view learning vocabulary as a burden, whichleads to passive learning attitudes and poor learning outcomes

A survey conducted in three classes from grades 10, 11, and 12 at a highschool in Mường Lát, Thanh Hóa province, found that: • Only 22% of studentsfeel excited about learning vocabulary • 88% of students find learning vocabularydifficult and easy to forget • Results from a vocabulary test at the beginning of thefirst semester showed that 85% of students scored below average, • and only 15%achieved a good or excellent score

This situation highlights the urgent need to innovate vocabulary teachingmethods, applying modern supporting tools to enhance teaching and learningquality, while aligning with the psychological development of students and thetrend of digital transformation in education

In this context, educational technology plays a crucial role in making positivechanges in foreign language learning Many language learning apps and freelanguage learning websites have been developed After years of teaching, researching, and using various software and websites to support language teachingand learning, I have drawn some conclusions about their strengths andweaknesses Based on this experience, I have identified the most effective AIsoftware for language learning For example, here are some apps I have used:

**Duolingo

* Weaknesses:

- Lack of depth: It doesn't offer in-depth lessons on grammar or advanced

conversations

- Excessive repetition: Some lessons can become repetitive, which might

lead to boredom after prolonged use

**Quizlet.

* Weaknesses:

- Limited scope: Primarily supports vocabulary learning and lacks features

to develop skills in listening, speaking, or writing

- Lack of detailed guidance: New users may struggle with creating their

own content without guidance from teachers

**Memrise

* Weaknesses:

- Limited grammar content: Focuses primarily on vocabulary and

phrases, lacking detailed grammar and conversation lessons

Trang 14

- Requires supplementary resources: Sometimes, the content may not be

updated regularly, requiring students to use additional learning resources

**Babbel

* Weaknesses:

Cost: Babbel is primarily a paid application, which could be a barrier for

students and families with limited budgets

Less gamified: The interface and learning approach are somewhat

traditional compared to other apps, which may not be as engaging for teenagers

**HelloTalk.

* Weaknesses:

- Requires autonomy and responsibility: Students need strong

communication skills and the ability to navigate appropriate interactions withnative speakers

- Online safety concerns: Close supervision is needed to ensure students are

not exposed to inappropriate content, especially for high school students

- Lacks structured learning content: The app is more about free exchange

and lacks a formal curriculum like other apps

***Summary:

- Duolingo and Quizlet are considered the top choices for high schoolteachers and students due to their ease of use, gamification, and suitability for

quick review and vocabulary memorization However, Quizlet stands out by

allowing both teachers and students to design lesson content that aligns closelywith their school curriculum, providing flexibility in learning

- Memrise offers a dynamic learning method through images and videos, making it a great supplement for expanding vocabulary

- Babbel is ideal for students looking for an in-depth language learningexperience, but its cost and traditional learning style may need consideration

- HelloTalk is useful for practicing communication but requires carefulmonitoring and guidance to ensure safety and appropriate interaction

Each app has its strengths and weaknesses, and students can combine them todevelop a balanced set of skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing

II THE STATUS OF THE ISSUE BEFORE APPLYING THE INNOVATIVE EXPERIENCE.

During the process of teaching English at high school, I noticed thatvocabulary learning remains one of the biggest challenges for most students.Although vocabulary is an essential foundation for developing all four languageskills—listening, speaking, reading, and writing—students often face difficulties

in remembering, pronouncing, and using words in the correct context

The current status of vocabulary teaching and learning at my school beforeapplying the innovative experience is evident in the following aspects:

1.Monotonous Teaching Methods with Limited Interaction.

Teachers primarily used traditional methods: introducing new vocabulary, explaining meanings, and asking students to take notes and memorize There werefew creative application activities and a lack of visual tools to support learning, leading students to quickly lose interest and resort to passive learning, lacking realmotivation

2.Students Encounter Difficulties in Remembering and Using Vocabulary.

Trang 15

- A survey conducted with 105 students from grades 10 and 11 showed thefollowing results:

- 72% of students said that vocabulary learning is hard to remember and isquickly forgotten

- 65% of students could not use the learned words in writing or speaking

- 78% of students felt unconfident when pronouncing new words Manystudents only memorized the Vietnamese meanings without knowing the correctpronunciation, how to use the words in sentences, or the scope of meanings indifferent contexts

3.Low Academic Results.

In the periodic vocabulary test at the beginning of the school year, thestatistical data showed:

- 65% of students scored below average (below 5 points)

- 25% of students scored average (5.0 – 6.5)

- Only 10% of students scored good or excellent (above 7.0) This reflects thelimitations of the old method of memorization without deep understanding orapplication

4.Lack of Modern Learning Tools.

Although students today frequently use smartphones, they do not know how

to utilize technology effectively for their studies Vocabulary learning still relies

on textbooks, handwritten notes, and lacks modern, flexible, and digital learningapplications that match current trends in the digital age

5 Lack of Interest Among Students, with Vocabulary Learning Viewed

as a Chore

Many students shared that they learn vocabulary only for exams, notrealizing its practical importance for communication Since they do not see thereal-world applications, they forget the words after exams, creating a cycle of

"learn – forget – relearn," which is exhausting and ineffective

The above situation clearly shows the need for a reform in teaching andlearning English vocabulary at schools In this context, the application of

information technology, specifically using online learning platforms like Quizlet, is an appropriate approach that aligns with students' psychological needs and learning habits in the digital age The initiative "Using Quizlet to Teach and Learn English Vocabulary Effectively" is an innovative method that makes teaching and learning English vocabulary more effective, engaging, and suited to the current student mindset.
