II Read the following passage and circle the letter A, B, C or D to indicate the correct answer

to each of the questions

Back in 1998, three 26-year-olds, Adam Baton, Richard Reed and Jon Wright, made up

Trang 7

their minds that it was time they either left their well-paid jobs in management consultancy andadvertising and went into business together or stopped talking about it What kind of business theywanted to set up they weren't quite sure but it was something they had been discussing ever sincethey were at university together Deciding that the way forward was to make it easier for busypeople to be healthy, the trio bought some fruit and made smoothies, which they then tested onpeople at a small jazz festival in London They put up a large sign asking, “Should we quit our jobs

to make these smoothies?” and put out one bin saying “Yes” and another saying “No” The Yes binfilled up immediately with empty bottles and the next day they resigned from their jobs

However, launching Innocent smoothies did not happen overnight Experts in the foodindustry told them that their product was too expensive, its shelf life was too short, and without theuse of additives their idea wouldn't work Even more worryingly, the numerous banks theyapproached were not too keen on financing them and it wasn't until their savings were about to run

out that a wealthy businessman took a leap of faith and invested in the business Ignoring most of

the advice they'd been given, Innocent then went on to create a range of drinks made from 100%fresh fruit and nothing else Careful production and high-tech packaging gave the drinks the longest

possible shelf life, but they stuck to their beliefs by not “messing about with them” at all The next

step was to persuade local shops to stock their product, which they delivered personally in theirgrass covered minibus

Their airy office in London - affectionately known as “Fruit Towers” - is open plan, the

“grass” floors, table football games, beanbags, and casually dressed trendy young staff representingthe fresh feeling Innocent is trying to create But alongside all this quirkiness (call them and you aregreeted with a cheerful “Hello, banana phone!”) is an impressive business New recipes created inthe high-tech kitchen are tried out on the people in the surrounding office buildings, although newproduct ideas, however fashionable, are rejected if they are too far from their main focus (making anatural, healthy, great-tasting drink) Their confidence that a quality product will sell itself appears

to have paid off; despite minimal advertising, Innocent currently sells around a million drinks a

week, turnover is around £75m and they now have a 61% market share of the smoothies industry

Aside from the greenery, one of the first things you notice about “Fruit Towers” is howhappy everyone there seems to be Convinced that success relies on the well-being and happiness ofthe people who work there, the three partners were determined to put the focus on making theiremployees feel valued So as well as financial incentives like company shares, healthcare, and extrabonuses, their staff are motivated by personalised “outside work” treats such as snowboarding trips, scholarships to enable them to pursue outside interests and studies, and a wide choice of social andsporting activities Innocent employees are positive, motivated and proud of where they work,

Trang 8

which is why the company has won numerous awards including Guardian Employer of the Year in

2005 and top place in the Sunday Times Best Small Companies to work for list

Wright, Baton and Reed had firm ideas from the very beginning about the kind of companythey wanted to run “If we call it Innocent we have a responsibility to be innocent, and as we expandthe more innocent we become” says Reed The enormously popular company works only withcompanies who have sound ethical and environmental standards, invests 10% of their profits in thecountries from which they buy their fruit, encourages recycling and gives away drinks to thehomeless At only 33, Reed is even acting as an advisor to the government on getting children to eathealthily Innocent's approach is well-timed Just as its drinks appeal to cash-rich, time-poorworkaholics, its approach to business is attractive to those who are disillusioned with the big multi-national corporations who are making vast profits while contributing to the destruction of ourplanet

61 The three friends gave up their “real jobs” because they had .

A always dreamt of creating fruit drinks together

B realized that one of their business ideas might be a success

C decided their “real jobs” did not allow them to live healthy lives

D lost interest in what they were doing before

62 Innocent's major obstacle to marketing their smoothies was

A deciding how to package the drink attractively

B seeking advice from experts

C working out how to keep the drinks fresh

D keeping the cost low to sell to supermarkets

63 The phrase “took a leap of faith” in paragraph 2 suggests that the investor .

A took a risk while hoping it would have a good result

B didn't believe in the future of innocent

C took the faith of Innocent's founders for granted

D tried to persuade other investors to give their money

64 The expression "not messing about with them" in paragraph 2 suggests that the trio didn't

A change the basic contents of the drinks

B check how long the drinks were kept in the shops

C allow anyone else to distribute the drinks

D worry about which bottles the drinks were in

65 The “Fruit Towers” office is NOT .

Trang 9

A ventilated due to the grassy floors B peculiar nor arresting

C equipped with leisure facilities D divided up into separate rooms

66 The success of Innocent can be attributed to the fact that

A their staff are young and trendy

B their ingredients change according to what is popular at the time

C the company has benefited from the partners' experience in advertising

D the partners have maintained a very clear focus on what they do

67 The phrase “paid off” in paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to .

68 Employees are motivated to work for innocent because they

A are paid more than other people in similar jobs

B appreciate working for a prize-winning company

C feel they are valued by the organisation

D get a lot of time off to pursue their interests

69 Innocent could become popular among the world’s consumers because it

A did not allow itself to become too big

B was much admired for its underlying philosophy

C believed in building the brand’s image and reputation

D did not concern itself with making a lot of money

III Read the following passage and fill the blank with ONE suitable word.

Trang 13

We’ve recently upgraded all our boats They used to be jet black, but our new ones now have these

comfortable dark red seats and ( Q12 )   a light-green exterior  in order to stand out from others andhelp promote our company This gives our boats a rather unique appearance, don’t you think?

We offer you a free lunchbox during the trip and we have three types Lunchbox 1 contains ham and

tomato sandwiches ( Q13 )   Lunchbox 2 contains a cheddar cheese roll  and Lunchbox 3 is based and also contains eggs and tuna All three lunchboxes also have a packet of crisps andchocolate bar inside Please let staff know which lunchbox you prefer

salad-I’m sure I don’t have to ask you not to throw anything into the sea We don’t have any bins to put

litter in, but ( Q14 )   Jess, myself or Ray, our other guide, will collect it from you  after lunch and put

it all in a large plastic sack

Questions 15 – 16 Choose TWO letters, A – E

B Who built it

C How long it took to build

D Who staffed it

E What it was built with

D Someone will explain what is inside them.

E They cannot be reached on foot.

Trang 14

The engine on the boat makes quite a lot of noise so before we head off, let me tell you a few thingsabout what you’re going to see

This area is famous for its ancient lighthouse, which you’ll see from the boat as we turn past the first

little island It was built in 1838 ( Q15/Q16 )   to protect sailors as a number of shipwrecks had led tosignificant loss of life The construction itself was complicated as some of the original drawingskept by the local council show It sits right on top of the cliffs in a very isolated spot In thenineteenth century there were many jobs there, such as polishing the brass lamps, chopping

firewood and cleaning windows, that kept lighthouse keepers busy ( Q15/Q16 )   These workerswere mainly prison convicts until the middle of that century when ordinary families willing to live

in such circumstances took over

Some of you have asked me what creatures we can expect to see I know everyone loves thepenguins, but they’re very shy and, unfortunately, tend to hide from passing boats, but you mightsee birds in the distance, such as sea eagles, flying around the cliff edges where they nest When we

get to the rocky area inhabited by ( Q17/Q18 )   fur seals, we’ll stop and watch them swimmingaround the coast They’re inquisitive creatures so don’t be surprised if one pops up right in front of

you Their predators, orca whales, hunt along the coastline too, but spotting one of these is rare ( Q1 7/Q18 )   Dolphins, on the other hand, can sometimes approach on their own or in groups as they ridethe waves beside us

Lastly, I want to mention the caves Tasmania is famous for its caves and the ones we’ll pass by are

so amazing that people are lost for words when they see them ( Q19/Q20 )   They can only beapproached by sea, but if you feel that you want to see more than we’re able to show you, then youcan take a kayak into the area on another day and one of our staff will give you more information onthat What we’ll do is to go through a narrow channel, past some incredible rock formations and

from there ( Q19/Q20 )   we’ll be able to see the openings to the caves, and at that point we’ll talk toyou about what lies beyond
