Internationalism
Terms play a crucial role in expressing common scientific concepts and facilitating international collaboration and technological exchanges Globalization has led to the widespread use of terminology across different languages, accelerating the development of international science As a result, many terms have been internationalized in various fields such as medicine, physics, and telecommunications However, each language may have specific principles for terminology based on its cultural context.
Accordingly, termmology in Vietnamese is not an exception, it has its typical characteristics including nalionalism and popularly
Terminology is a unique linguistic unit that is integral to specific professions and is deeply rooted in the national language In Vietnam, terminology must reflect Vietnamese culture and the distinct characteristics of the Vietnamese language It is essential for these terms to resonate with the Vietnamese people, encompassing both lexicological and grammatical elements.
Terminology is essential for facilitating scientific and technological advancement for everyone As a key aspect of linguistics, it significantly contributes to the progress of science, making it crucial for terminology to be easily understood in terms of reading, writing, speaking, and memorization.
According to the International Standardization Organization ( ISO,
1988), the following factors arc of essential consideration in the creation of terminology are:
Terms must consistently reflect the essential characteristics of the concepts they represent to ensure accurate reference They should be economical to prevent ambiguity and homonymy Additionally, terms need to be lexically systematic, adhering to the phonological and morphological rules of the language, and should comply with common word-formation processes, allowing for necessary composition and derivation Importantly, the meaning of a term should remain context-free The creation of terms, both primary and secondary, is influenced by various factors and motivations When a new concept emerges, primary term formation occurs, while secondary term formation addresses the monolingual revision of existing terminology.
‘TL after a process of transferring knowledge from one linguistic community to another
Technical terminology is constantly evolving due to ongoing advancements in science and technology The formation of both primary and secondary terms is influenced by the emergence of various synonyms and variants, which aim to meet the demand for more accessible scientific language and product differentiation.
4 The distinction between terms and words
It is essential to differentiate between terminology and common language According to Baker (1998), terms differ from ordinary words as they possess a specific reference, indicating distinct conceptual entities, properties, activities, or relationships that define the knowledge space of a particular subject.
Moreover, while general terms can apply across various subjects, specific terms hold distinct meanings within particular disciplines Their significance and relevance persist only as long as they contribute to the knowledge system that defines them.
The boundary between terms and words is not clearly defined, as many terms evolve into everyday words through frequent use in daily life, while ordinary words can transform into specialized terms within specific fields.

We can easily gel “hop đồng” in Vietnamese equivalent by dictionary and in this area; the meaning of word has no change in TT
A contract is a written or electronic document that signifies an agreement between two parties to perform work or supply goods This includes agreements or orders for the procurement of services or supplies.

I The strategy applied in translation of single terms
This paper focuses on recognized translation as a key strategy for translating single terms, acknowledging the various ways terms can be formed Due to time constraints and knowledge limitations, it highlights the importance of understanding term formation, enabling translators to translate these terms more effectively.
Many words can be translated based on their original context in general text Due to the multi-lexical nature of words and the various fields of translation, a word may retain its original meaning or experience a slight shift in meaning Translators are adept at recognizing these nuances and can identify the closest equivalent in the target text For instance, the term "broker" can be translated as "người môi giới," reflecting its original meaning in a general context.

IL.1 Shift or transposition translation
‘The most popular strategy applied to translate compound terms is
Shift or transposition translation A “shift” (in Catford’ term) or
“transposition” (Vinay & Darbelnet) is a translation procedure involving a change in the grammar from SL to ‘I'L, including two sub classification: automatic translation and rank-shifl lranslation
That is one type of transposition which has change in the word order, and offers translator no choice
The examples below illustrate the key features of the automatic shifi strategy The term "Double room" is a compound word consisting of an adjective and a noun, where "Double" translates to "déi" and "room" translates to "phéng."
In Vietnamese, the term "double room" is translated as "phòng đôi," illustrating a shift in word order from English, where the adjective precedes the noun Similarly, "conference room" translates to "phòng hội nghị," again reflecting a reversal in the arrangement of words, with the noun "conference" following "room" in Vietnamese This automatic shift in translation demonstrates a flexible approach, allowing for a natural conversion of terms while maintaining their meanings.

Similarly, "conference room" translates to "phòng hội nghị" in Vietnamese, demonstrating another shift in word order; here, the noun "conference" follows the noun "room." This flexible adjustment in translation ensures that all components of the terms are naturally adapted to fit the linguistic structure of Vietnamese.

Rank-shift translation is a type of shift translation that entails grammatical changes from the source language (SL) to the target language (TL) In this process, the TL may include additional words or omit certain words compared to the SL.
Fxample: Exceutive housckceper Trưởng bộ phân phòng,
In the source language (SL), the term "executive housekeeper" consists of an adjective and a noun, where the adjective "executive" transforms into a noun in the target language (TL) This demonstrates a grammatical shift from the SL to the TL.
Example: Complimentary rate Giá phòng ưu đãi
Adj + Noun Noun- Nount Adj
In the TT, you can see that il is added word “ phong” comparing with
SI Adding words make readers understand clearer and more exactly about the terms
Companion rate Suất giá cho người củng thuê
Exccutive housekecpcr Trưởng bô phận phỏng
Complimentary rate Giá phòng ưu đãi
Group operator Cơ sở kinh doanh dich vu du lịch lại chỗ
Companion fare Giá cước cho người đi theo
Incentive fare Giá cước du lịch thưởng
This strategy involves translating phrases by excluding non-essential words, thereby enhancing the clarity and impact of the text while preventing redundancy in the translation.
In the context of translation, the term "back of the house" translates to "phía sau" in Vietnamese, which can be directly rendered as "phía sau của khách sạn." However, for a more fluid translation, omitting the word "of" leads to the more concise "hậu sinh." Similarly, the phrase "office of charge" can be simplified by removing the preposition "of," resulting in the translation "miễn phí."
With this strategy, the content of SL is not changed, and translators can gain a better and more natural Vietnamese TL
Back of the house Hậu sảnh
Front of the house Tiên sảnh
Free of charge Miễn phi
Letter of confirmation "Thư xác nhận
Mothod of payment Phương thức thanh toán
Kinds of room Hạng, loại phòng
Method of selling rooms Phương thức thanh toán phòng
This strategy often adds information, explains more about terms which are difficult la Locus on a word or phrase m TL so that readers van understand the terms exactly
The term "soft drinks" can be translated into Vietnamese using a word-for-word method as "đồ uống nhẹ," but a more accurate translation is "đồ uống có ga." Similarly, the term "sleep out" can be translated as "ngủ ngoài."
Vietnamese equivalent but it is used in travel, which means "khách ngủ ngoài, không ngủ ở khách sạn”
Some examples are also translated hy applying this strategy:
114 Translation by paraphrase using related words
This strategy is effective for translating English words or concepts that encompass multiple meanings For instance, the phrase “concrete jungle” translates to “rimg ram,” but in a travel context, it means “khu du lich déng duc, v6 16 chire.” A literal, word-for-word translation from English to Vietnamese can lead to redundancy To ensure accurate and meaningful translations, paraphrasing is the most effective strategy.
Some examples for this strategy:
Concrete jungle Khu du lịch đồng đúc, vô tổ chức
Make up Bang yêu cầu làm phòng
Black market Chúc may măn ( trước những chuyền đi quan trọng) High roller Khách chơi bạc hảo phóng, phung phi
Invisible export/import Số tiên mà công dân nước nào đó đã chỉ tiêu du lịch trên nước khác
Ghost town Thành phố trước đông người ở, giờ trồng trơn, trở thành điểm du lich
1.5 Translation of abbreviation by using loan words
Loan words have significantly enriched human vocabulary, particularly in the context of work and study In recent decades, the Vietnamese language has incorporated numerous English loan words, including terms like "chat," "copy," "marketing," "menu," and "list." Additionally, in the procurement field, loan words often appear as abbreviations.
An abbreviation is a condensed version of a word or phrase, often formed from its letters For instance, "abbreviation" can be abbreviated as "abbr" or "abbrev." Commonly, organizational names are presented in abbreviated forms, such as ATC Bank, WTO, ATECH, ASEAN, and AMT.
IT Abbreviations of this ficld are also classilicd into the most common types: acronyms
Acronyms are formed from the initial letters of multiple words, serving as a concise version of a word or phrase Typically, they consist of one or more letters derived from the original term or expression.
Acronyms are formed from the initial letters of a name or expression, with each letter pronounced separately, such as ABF (American Breakfast) or VOA (Visa on Arrival) By using acronyms, translators can shorten terms to reduce redundancy while ensuring that readers still understand their meaning.
The following attached reference table is illustrations in order that readers can closely approach with this strategy:

ABF American ABE ( Bữa ăn sáng kiểu Mỹ) breakfast
SGL Single bed room SGL, ( Phòng 1 giường, 1 người ở)
TWN Twin bed room TWN (Phòng 2 giường, 2 người ở)

5ome problems in translation process
L Some problems in translation process
In translation, it is common for general English words to carry different meanings and convey new concepts in specific contexts, which can lead to misunderstandings during the translation process.
The translators often misunderstand the meaning of word belween general Knglish and specific English or among fields In specific cases, each word express different meaning
The term "skips" has different meanings in various contexts In general English, it refers to "dng bau," while in sports, it signifies "đội trưởng" or "thủ quan." In the tourism sector, it denotes "khách quyl" or "không thanh loan nền phòng."
In general English, the term "operator" refers to a person who manages or oversees operations However, in the specific context of the tourism industry, "ground operator" is understood to mean a local service provider that facilitates tourism activities on-site.
Surely, translators will have conclusion how Lo use cxactly and flexibly Vietnamese equivalent to avoid misunderstanding
In every specialized field, numerous terms exist, often formed in various ways Due to a limited understanding of these specific areas, translators frequently encounter challenges when translating terminology.
Some terms express new concept or new ideas which are formed in the working process of each field or formed by using habits or slang such as
“back-to-back” (1ién tue), “ walk-in-guest” ( khách văng lai, tự đến)
Many terms can be easily understood by analyzing the meanings of their individual words or through direct translation For example, the term “double room” can be deciphered by combining “double” and “room.” Similarly, “buffet breakfast” translates to “bữa sáng tự chọn” by looking up each word in the dictionary However, some phrases do not lend themselves to straightforward translation, leading to potential misunderstandings if a word-for-word approach is used For instance, “desk agent” translates to “lễ tân,” while “check-in” refers to “thủ tục nhận phòng khách sạn,” and “check-out” means “thủ tục trả phòng khách sạn.”
Translators often face challenges when translating abbreviations due to the diverse methods used to form them A lack of knowledge about the meanings of these abbreviations can hinder a translator's ability to accurately convey their intended meaning, making it difficult to find equivalent terms in dictionaries.
Li Some suggestions for translation
The most difficult to translate ESP is terminology which is often translated practically and cxaclly in requirement Generally, the best translation should be performed according to some following steps:
Translators should strive to grasp the context and intent of the entire text they are translating The key to achieving this is by thoroughly reading all sentences to fully understand the message intended in the original language This technique emphasizes the importance of conveying the message clearly and naturally By doing so, translators can accurately capture the meaning of words within the detailed content, as most terms are derived from standard English vocabulary.
Translators must enhance their understanding of the subject matter to accurately grasp and utilize terminology, which will help mitigate common translation challenges By doing so, they can select the most appropriate Vietnamese equivalents and prevent misunderstandings Additionally, it is crucial for translators to avoid a literal, word-for-word translation approach, as this can distort the original meaning and diminish the expression's beauty While many terms can be translated using general words, there are instances where translating an English word requires a longer phrase or even a complete sentence to ensure clarity for the reader.
English is now regarded as an international language, making it a mandatory subject in educational institutions Its significance spans various fields, including economics, science, politics, and medicine Consequently, the translation of English terms for specific purposes is essential.
My graduation paper consists of three parts The first part presents the rationale, aims, methods, scope, and design of the study, providing readers with an overview The second part is the most critical, comprising three chapters that explore the theoretical background of translation and various translation methods Chapter I discusses strategies applied in translating common travel contract terms, including recognized translation, shift translation, translation by omission, addition, paraphrase using related words, and the use of loan words Chapter III addresses challenges encountered during the translation process and offers suggestions for improvement Finally, Part III summarizes the key ideas from the previous sections and proposes recommendations for future research.
This study aims to provide valuable insights into travel contract terminology, particularly focusing on English terms relevant to the tourism sector It seeks to offer useful ideas for readers interested in furthering their understanding of this important area.
Mistakes and shortcomings in this graduation paper are inevitable due to my limited time and knowledge I welcome contributions, advice, and support from teachers and readers to enhance the quality of my work.
