INTRODUCTION 0117

Background of the research - - S ST HH TT ki nh 1

The COVID-19 pandemic significantly increased the demand for online learning platforms as educational institutions transitioned to remote learning (Johnson, 2020) This shift was a direct result of the necessity for distance education during the pandemic (Smith, 2021) Advancements in technology have been crucial in supporting this educational transformation The rapid move from traditional to online education was both sudden and essential (Smith, 2021) Terms like "online learning" and "flipped classroom" characterize this new approach, where interactions occur through digital devices over the Internet (Smith & Johnson, 2021) Platforms such as Zoom and Google Meet facilitate virtual classrooms, enabling students to access distance education effectively Additionally, social networking sites, initially designed for entertainment, have evolved into valuable educational tools by allowing users to share texts, instant messages, images, links, and videos (Nur, 2022).

English has become essential across all sectors, making it challenging to navigate the internet without it As a global connector, English opens up numerous career opportunities Proficiency in English involves mastering four key skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing, all of which depend on a strong vocabulary foundation Vocabulary is vital for language improvement, particularly for second-language learners, as a robust command of English words is necessary for effective integration and engagement in English-speaking environments.

Social media and technological advancements serve as essential tools for learning, with approximately 76.95 million users in Vietnam, representing 78.1% of the population as of early 2022, including 70.4 million Facebook users These platforms are utilized for both entertainment and educational purposes, providing easy access to a wealth of information, much of which is in English, thereby enhancing users' vocabulary The COVID-19 pandemic has further accelerated the rise of TikTok, motivating students to engage creatively by producing diverse video content As reported by Sensor Tower in 2021, TikTok has become the most popular social media platform, second only to Instagram.

2022 Furthermore, the TikTok application witnessed considerable growth in

2022 on the App Store and Google Play, with more than 500 million users globally having downloaded the TikTok social content application from ByteDance (2022).

TikTok has rapidly emerged as a leading platform for sharing and uploading a diverse range of videos, thanks to its user-friendly interface and the ease of creating short-form content Users can explore various categories such as entertainment, education, comedy, tutorials, and challenges, fostering creativity and global connectivity The platform enables both amateurs and professionals to enhance their videos with effects like filters, background music, stickers, and text, making content more engaging and visually appealing.

TikTok's "duet videos" feature enables content creators to collaborate through split-screen videos, fostering engaging interactions among users (D'Souza, 2022) The app offers various functionalities, such as a changing-speed tool and voice effects, encouraging creativity and appealing video production As social media's popularity surges, platforms like TikTok have become essential in daily life worldwide (Daniel, 2022) This short-form video-sharing app allows users to create and share diverse content, from entertainment to education Recently, TikTok has emerged as a valuable resource for language learning, with educators and students leveraging the platform to enhance English vocabulary acquisition This study explores EFL seniors' perceptions of TikTok as an effective tool for language learning.

According to Fahdin's 2020 research, there is a vast amount of English content online, yet many people find it challenging to understand the language TikTok, a widely used social media platform, has shown promise as a tool for language learning, with numerous students experiencing notable vocabulary enhancement by consistently watching English videos Therefore, TikTok can be regarded as an effective resource for acquiring English language skills.

In Vietnam, the use of social media for educational purposes has surged, with institutions and educators recognizing its potential for enhancing communication and collaboration (Nguyen, 2017) Platforms like Facebook, Zalo, and Edmodo are widely used for various educational activities, such as delivering content, exchanging assignments, and facilitating discussions (Nguyen, 2019) These platforms provide students with convenient access to online learning and educational resources, enabling interaction with peers and teachers beyond traditional classroom boundaries They also foster personalized learning and collaborative projects while extending educational exploration (Le & Pham, 2018) Nonetheless, it is crucial to address privacy and security concerns and establish guidelines to ensure the responsible use of social media in Vietnam's educational landscape.

There are two research questions (RQ):

TikTok has emerged as a promising tool for enhancing vocabulary learning, attracting attention for its innovative approach Traditional methods like flashcards and memorization have long been recognized for their effectiveness in language acquisition, but TikTok offers a modern alternative that engages learners in new ways.

TikTok presents an innovative approach to vocabulary learning, appealing particularly to younger generations who favor interactive and multimedia-based education By enabling the creation and sharing of engaging content, such as skits and role-plays, TikTok enhances vocabulary retention and motivation among learners Additionally, it serves as a collaborative platform where users can engage in peer teaching and provide feedback, fostering a vibrant learning community Through features like comments, likes, and shares, learners can exchange knowledge and support one another, promoting active participation and reciprocal learning.

Some scholars express concerns about using TikTok for vocabulary learning, noting that its content may lack accuracy due to the prevalence of informal and colloquial language (Li, Liang, and Li, 2021) Additionally, TikTok may not cater to all learners, especially those who favor traditional classroom-based education (Wu, Chen, and Chang, 2021).

Theoretical framework - - c2 1 11 TH gọt kh 7

Self-Determination Theory explores the key factors that drive individuals' motivation to engage in specific behaviors (Kendra, 2022) For EFL seniors utilizing TikTok to enhance their English vocabulary, motivation is shaped by three core elements: autonomy, competence, and relatedness Autonomy reflects the degree of control learners perceive over their educational journey, while competence relates to their confidence in acquiring English vocabulary through the platform Additionally, relatedness emphasizes the importance of social connections with other TikTok users, which can significantly influence their motivation to participate in language learning activities.

A study by Mohsenzadeh and Zarrinabadi (2021) examined the influence of Self-Determination Theory (SDT) on the motivation of Iranian EFL students to learn English According to Ghanizadeh and Moafian (2019), the three essential elements of SDT—autonomy, competence, and relatedness—play a significant role in enhancing learners' motivation Students who experienced a sense of control over their learning, confidence in their language skills, and strong connections with peers and instructors were found to be more motivated to study English.

A study revealed that Self-Determination Theory (SDT) significantly predicts language learning motivation, regardless of the language or learner The three key components of SDT—autonomy, competence, and relatedness—consistently enhance motivation for language acquisition However, the strength of this correlation varies based on factors such as the learners' age, the nature of the language learning tasks, and the cultural context.

Self-Determination Theory (SDT) significantly impacts the motivation of language learners, particularly among Iranian EFL students, as highlighted by Mohsenzadeh and Zarrinabadi (2021) The theory's key components—autonomy, competence, and relatedness—are essential for enhancing motivation in learning English Ghanizadeh and Moafian (2019) further confirmed that SDT serves as a reliable predictor of language learning motivation, with its components consistently fostering increased motivation Nonetheless, they noted that factors such as age, learning tasks, and cultural context also play a role in shaping the relationship between SDT and motivation.

In summary, these studies showed the importance of SDT and its components in motivating language learners, emphasizing the need for further research in diverse settings.

The Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) analyzes how individuals perceive and utilize technology, highlighting that EFL seniors may have differing views on TikTok as a learning platform, which can impact their acceptance and usage of the app This theoretical framework investigates the roles of ease of use, perceived usefulness, and social influence in shaping EFL seniors' perceptions of TikTok as an effective tool for enhancing English vocabulary learning.

The Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), introduced by Davis in 1989, focuses on how individuals perceive and adopt technology Research by Wang in 2020 highlighted that TAM can effectively analyze university students' acceptance of language learning apps The study found that students' willingness to use these apps is primarily influenced by their perceived benefits and ease of use Those who view the apps as valuable and user-friendly are more likely to embrace them in their learning process.

Liu and Liu (2021) explored the use of mobile learning apps by Chinese EFL learners through the lens of the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) Their research revealed that learners' perceptions of the app's utility, ease of use, and their overall attitude toward mobile learning significantly influenced their willingness to engage with these applications Additionally, the study identified that learners' attitudes toward mobile learning served as a partial mediator in the relationship between usage patterns and the intended purpose of the app.

The Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) is a valuable framework for understanding how individuals perceive and utilize technology in language learning Wang et al (2020) explored the perceptions of EFL seniors regarding TikTok as a tool for enhancing English vocabulary Additionally, Liu and Liu (2021) examined university students' acceptance of language learning apps through the TAM model Their research further extends to the use of mobile learning apps by Chinese EFL learners, highlighting the model's applicability in diverse educational contexts.

Figure 2.2: Technology Acceptance Model Theory

The Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) is a framework that explains how users accept and adopt new technologies, emphasizing two key factors: the perceived usefulness of the technology in enhancing performance and the perceived ease of use These factors significantly shape users' attitudes toward the technology, ultimately affecting their intention to utilize it TAM has been widely utilized across various fields to understand and predict technology adoption patterns.

Research indicates that perceived usefulness, ease of use, and attitudes toward technology significantly influence individuals' acceptance and adoption of technology in language learning Learners' views on the utility and convenience of technology greatly affect their willingness to engage with it Furthermore, learners' attitudes toward mobile learning partially mediate the relationship between technology use and the app's intended purpose These insights are crucial for the design and implementation of effective language learning technologies that encourage learner adoption and usage.

Figure 2.3: The relationship between two theoretical frameworks and vocabulary learning

The relationship between behavioral intention and TikTok usage significantly influences vocabulary learning and language acquisition Behavioral intention reflects an individual's motivation to use TikTok as a language learning tool When learners possess a positive intention towards utilizing TikTok, it enhances their likelihood of actively engaging with the platform for effective language learning.

Using TikTok for language learning significantly impacts vocabulary acquisition by exposing learners to authentic, contextually relevant vocabulary (Smith, 2021) The platform's engaging short videos enhance attention and retention of new words (Johnson, 2020) Learners benefit from a diverse range of vocabulary, including colloquial expressions and current trends (Brown, 2022) TikTok's visual and auditory elements help users understand vocabulary in context, while interactive features like comments encourage engagement and reinforce language practice.

Recent studies indicate that students acquire new vocabulary daily through online tools, particularly social media, which aids in discovering English vocabulary (Afrah, 2022) TikTok, a globally popular application, has emerged as a significant platform for students, who use it to express themselves and share diverse content, including messages, news, and videos (Sinta, 2022) However, a key challenge students encounter in learning English is the lack of vocabulary, highlighting the importance of utilizing platforms like TikTok for language development, especially during periods like the COVID-19 lockdown.

19, social media, including TikTok, has become viral According to Nurs

Research from 2022 indicates that learners are attracted to unique features that blend entertainment with informative content, highlighting that students are more engaged in learning experiences that are both enjoyable and educational (Pekrun, 2006) Consequently, instructors are leveraging TikTok's advantageous capabilities by posting and sharing videos for educational purposes (Sinta).

The study aims to leverage technology to enhance student interactions for practicing and improving English skills Utilizing a qualitative method, the researcher categorized the class into three levels and gathered data through observations and interviews Findings indicate that TikTok duet videos effectively aid memory retention and are user-friendly for both teachers and students Furthermore, learning through social media not only alleviates boredom but also boosts student motivation.

A study by Wu, Chen, and Chang (2021) highlights the effectiveness of TikTok as a tool for enhancing language learning, particularly in improving English vocabulary In their research involving 68 college students, those who learned vocabulary through TikTok videos outperformed their peers who received traditional instruction Additionally, the authors found that most students held positive attitudes towards using TikTok for language learning Fredrickson (2001) suggests that experiencing positive emotions during learning can broaden focus and cognitive abilities, further supporting the benefits of interactive platforms like TikTok in educational settings.

The study highlights 12 abilities that promote creativity and adaptable thinking, suggesting that incorporating TikTok into language learning can significantly enhance student motivation, engagement, and autonomy While it provides valuable insights into the role of technology in language education, the research has limitations, including a narrow focus on vocabulary and a small sample size Despite these shortcomings, the findings indicate that TikTok may be an effective tool for language acquisition, underscoring the necessity for further research in this area According to Zhai Xiuwen and Abu Bakar Razali (2021), TikTok offers opportunities for short video sharing, which aligns with the study's aim of utilizing the platform for educational purposes Overall, this research emphasizes TikTok's potential as an assistive tool for language learning and encourages educators to explore innovative technologies in their teaching methods.

Recent interest in mobile technology for language learning, especially vocabulary development, has surged, with WeChat emerging as a key tool in this area A quasi-experimental study by Li, Liang, and Li (2021) published in the Journal of Educational Computing Research highlights the effectiveness of WeChat-based mobile learning in improving English vocabulary acquisition The findings indicate that using WeChat is more effective than traditional classroom methods for enhancing vocabulary knowledge among Chinese English learners Additionally, Kendra's research underscores the importance of autonomy, competence, and relatedness in boosting learners' intrinsic motivation.

Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) is emerging as an effective method for improving language acquisition among English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students Research, including a quasi-experimental study by Alkharusi (2017), has highlighted MALL's role in enhancing vocabulary acquisition This study involved pre-and post-tests and surveys to collect data, ultimately demonstrating a positive effect of MALL on the vocabulary development of Saudi EFL students.

Consequently, integrating MALL into language learning can effectively enhance EFL students' vocabulary acquisition; thus, educators should consider

Recent research highlights the effectiveness of Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) in enhancing language acquisition A study by Sung and Chen (2016) demonstrated that mobile technology significantly boosts vocabulary acquisition among Taiwanese EFL students Additionally, Kukulska-Hulme and Shield (2008) emphasized the need for mobile learning systems to be tailored to learners' needs and preferences Chen and Chung (2008) further stressed the importance of integrating MALL into language curricula to improve the overall learning experience for students.

Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) has emerged as a valuable tool for enhancing vocabulary acquisition among EFL students Research, including Alkharusi's (2017) study, highlights the positive effects of MALL on vocabulary development in Saudi EFL learners Numerous studies further corroborate the effectiveness of MALL in language education Therefore, integrating MALL into language learning curricula presents a promising strategy to improve vocabulary acquisition for EFL students However, it is essential to consider factors such as learners' needs, preferences, and the alignment of MALL with the overall language learning framework to maximize its effectiveness.

In conclusion, while existing studies have highlighted the positive impacts of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), including TikTok, on the learning process across various educational levels, there is a distinct gap in research focused specifically on English-major university students in Vietnam Although previous studies have identified both advantages and disadvantages of ICT tools, they often lack practical applications based on real-world expectations This current study aims to explore the effects of the TikTok application on English-major students at An Giang University in Vietnam.
