This thesis delves into the complex area of demotivating factors that hinder the active participation of English majors in scientific research efforts at

This study at An Giang University highlights the crucial role of scientific research in academic development and addresses the reluctance of English majors to engage in research activities Utilizing a mixed methods approach, including surveys and interviews with 93 students from English Linguistics and Literature (EL&L) and English Language Teacher Education (ELTE), the research identifies key demotivating factors affecting students' research participation Internal obstacles such as Personal Attitude, Psychological Issues, and Research Skills significantly hinder motivation, while External Hindrances and Other Activities further exacerbate the situation The findings emphasize the necessity for targeted interventions that create a supportive research environment within English major curricula By enhancing students' research capabilities and institutional support, these initiatives aim to foster a vibrant academic atmosphere, benefiting both English and non-English majors at the Faculty of Foreign Languages and informing future research in diverse educational contexts globally.

Chapter 2 provides a comprehensive literature review, beginning with an overview of research methodologies It highlights the significance of research in education, emphasizing its role in enhancing learning outcomes The chapter outlines the research process and discusses the motivations driving individuals to engage in research activities Conversely, it also addresses the demotivating factors that hinder research participation, categorizing them into internal and external influences Furthermore, the chapter details the regulations and requirements for students conducting scientific research at An Giang University and reviews related studies to contextualize the findings within existing literature.

In Chapter 4, we explore the findings and discussions regarding students' interest in research activities and the demotivating factors affecting English major students at An Giang University The investigation reveals insights into how students perceive research opportunities and the challenges they face that hinder their engagement in scientific inquiry Understanding these factors is crucial for enhancing research participation among students and fostering a more robust academic environment.

The factors influencing English major students' interest in research include personal attributes, psychological issues, research skills and knowledge, external hindrances, and other activities Understanding these elements is crucial for fostering a research-oriented mindset among students.
