DECLARATION I hereby declare that the thesis entitled "A Study on English-majored Seniors’ Perception and Production of Stress and Intonation at An Giang University" is entirely my own w
This study investigates the perception and production of English stress and intonation among English-majored seniors at An Giang University, highlighting their significance in effective communication While existing research often focuses on individual sound errors, this study emphasizes the importance of stress and intonation in English learning Employing a mixed-methods design, the research included a survey with 74 seniors to assess their perceptions of English segmental elements, followed by production tests involving 20 seniors categorized by their understanding of stress and intonation The findings aim to provide valuable insights for enhancing English pronunciation teaching and learning in university contexts.
The study revealed that seniors possess moderate confidence in their understanding of stress and intonation but face a notable gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, particularly outside the classroom They value fluent speech akin to native speakers but worry about their mother tongue's impact on their pronunciation skills Common errors identified include rhythmic errors, incorrect stress placement, intonation pattern mistakes, and tonic syllable identification issues The research underscores the necessity for improved pronunciation practices in the English Listening and Speaking courses at An Giang University and advocates for the use of technological tools like Praat software These tools provide essential visual and auditory feedback, allowing students to enhance their pronunciation by visualizing and correcting pitch contours and stress placement in real time.
Key terms: English Pronunciation, Stress, Intonation, Praat, Stressed- time, Syllable-timed.
