Literature review
Theoretical framework
The primary goal of learning a language, including English, is to enhance the four essential skills: listening, reading, writing, and speaking Listening and reading are classified as passive or receptive skills, while writing and speaking are considered active or productive skills English learners focus on absorbing auditory and visual information without the need to construct sentences initially This receptive understanding is crucial, as it lays the foundation for later productive use of the language, enabling learners to effectively communicate their ideas and thoughts.
When it comes to productive language skills, learners must demonstrate their abilities through speaking and writing, which involves persuading others and expressing ideas and emotions (Jaramillo & Medina, 2011) This dissertation focuses specifically on the English writing skills of students utilizing AI services to enhance their work.
2.1.2 The importance of English writing skills
In today's world, writing skills are crucial for mastering a foreign language According to Ariana (2010), writing is an indispensable component of language learning, highlighting its significance for teachers, students, and researchers alike.
Writing skills empower learners to think critically and generate meaningful content Through writing, they can articulate their thoughts clearly and organize their messages effectively This ability not only enhances communication with individuals worldwide but also serves as a vital tool for self-expression and personal reflection.
Strong English writing skills are crucial in various professional fields, as employers prioritize candidates who can effectively convey information Cunningsworth (1995) highlights that strong writing abilities reflect professionalism and attention to detail These skills are particularly important in roles related to communication, documentation, marketing, and customer service.
Writing skills, particularly in English, are essential in today’s society, as they are applicable across various fields and contribute significantly to personal development Proficient English writing abilities facilitate engagement in global integration and help individuals become global citizens; lacking these skills can lead to significant disadvantages in an increasingly interconnected world.
2.1.3 AIED and AI-based writing tools
According to research by Russel and Norvig (2016), artificial intelligence refers to the development of computer systems that can perform tasks typically requiring human intelligence This field encompasses the creation of advanced technologies that enable machines to think, learn, and make decisions autonomously.
