INTRODUCTION

There are certainly many differences in the culinary culture of many countries around the world, so we aim to research the differences between British and Vietnamese breakfast dishes One of the reasons we chose this topic to research is because, as far as we know, many experts have suggested that breakfast is the most important meal, and the quality of breakfast

is also extremely important "Breakfast is referred to be the most significant meal of the day since it supplies calories and energy for the tasks that lie ahead."(Charles Spence, 2017) And above all, the main reason for this research is to show the difference between the breakfast culture of England and Vietnam In this research project, the problem being investigated is what British and Vietnamese people eat for breakfast In addition, these findings provide additional information about the traditional and popular breakfast dishes of the two countries The study shows the diversity of breakfast dishes between the two countries In England, most

of their dishes are low-carb dishes like Potato Scone or with a traditional meal like Full English Breakfast, etc In Vietnam, the dishes are very diverse, with watery dishes such as bun, mien, chao, pho or dry dishes such as banh mi, xoi, etc It can be seen that a fascinating difference is that British people often do not eat dishes containing water for breakfast

CHAPTERS

Breakfast is almost the most important meal of the day Many countries have different breakfast cultures, typically in England and Vietnam Following the information we have learned below to better understand the breakfast culture of the two countries

Chapter 1: Learn about Vietnamese breakfast culture

Vietnamese breakfasts are diverse and delicious Some popular options include:

VietNam Online (2023) found that pho is not only the most consumed breakfast in Vietnam but is also well-known around the world as a representation of Vietnamese cuisine There are thousands of Pho shops that provide thousands different tastes; for this reason, certain Pho shops are far more well-known than the others, and there is a mystery surrounding the Pho broth

Pho is a savory noodle soup that is typically eaten for breakfast in Vietnam It consists

of rice noodles, broth, herbs, and meat (usually beef or chicken) Pho is a great way to start your day with a warm and hearty meal

Bun - Rice Vermicelli: Bun is made of rice flour, just like Pho, but it has a small, circular shape as opposed to Pho's flat triangle shape Bun's broth recipes are even more varied than those for Pho, leading to a variety of vermicelli dishes The most well-known ones are Bun Cha (vermicelli and grilled chopped meat), Bun Rieu (vermicelli and crab meat soup), Bun Thang (various vermicelli), Bun Ca (vermicelli with fried fish), and Bun Oc (vermicelli and snail), while Hue is known for its Bun Bo (vermicelli filled with beef) The primary ingredients of Bun's soup are tomato, garcinia cowa, and lemon lime Bun is known for having a sufficiently sour taste

The Vietnamese breakfast sandwich, called Banh mi 6p la, is a fried egg on a baguette Here it is enhanced with smoked salmon and asparagus "Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication", as Leonardo Da Vinci is credited with saying Fried eggs are the primary element of Banh mi 6p la - a classic Vietnamese variant of the sandwich Fried eggs can be used in place of or in addition to meat, such as cha lua - pig sausage or pieces of roasted pork belly (Tasteatlas, 2023)

There are many benefits to living in Saigon For me, having access to freshly baked baguettes with a crispy, light crust is a benefit These could be replaced with portions of breadsticks or French baguettes Instead of going for the heavier, doughier kind, I do advise you to try to find baguettes or breadsticks that are extremely light inside

It is difficult to determine whether Pho or Xoi 1s more popular for breakfast in Vietnam, despite the fact that Pho is well-known worldwide In Vietnam, even the tiniest lanes can have

a street vendor selling Xoi in the morning, or one can spot one or two people riding bicycles with a basket of the vegetable, wrapped in banana leaves, loudly promoting their Xoi There are several types of sticky rice; from low-cost, basic varieties like Xoi Gac (rice colored with Gac's oil), Xoi Do Xanh (rice with green beans), Xoi Lac (rice with peanuts), or Xoi Ngo (rice with corns) for commoners, to more expensive varieties like Xoi Trung (rice with egg), Xoi Pate (rice with paste), or Xoi Cha (rice with meat spirals)

According to Vinpearl (2023), Vietnamese broken rice, or "com tam," is a common morning meal for the people, having its origins in the southern region of Vietnam This meal, which is made of broken rice grains, comes with pickled carrots, steamed egg meatloaf, shredded pig rinds, and chargrilled pork chops (Vinpearl, 2023)

Vietnamese breakfast recipes are known for their popular dish, banh cuon, or Vietnamese steamed rice roll It is served with fish sauce and consists of delicate rice flour sheets stuffed with a flavorful mixture of minced pork, mushrooms, and fried onions Banh cuon is a very inexpensive dish that is great for breakfast because a portion costs so little

And the last one, Coffee - A great idea for a tasty Vietnamese breakfast Vietnamese breakfast culture places a great deal of significance on coffee, making it an essential component of daily life Vietnamese coffee has a strong, robust flavor and is frequently served with condensed milk for a rich, creamy finish You will feel like a local when you indulge in delectable Vietnamese breakfast fare and sip a cup of ca phe sua da (iced coffee) or creamy egg coffee

Chapter 2: Learn about British breakfast culture

Even today, most American towns and cities serve the English breakfast, which is also available everywhere British expatriates live It is a long-standing English breakfast custom Because of the Landed Gentry and their ornate hunt breakfasts, it all began in the fourteenth

or fifteenth century Subsequently, the Victorian upper and middle classes adopted the practice, turning it into an artistic endeavor The components were then standardized by the Edwardians, who arrived and gave us the English breakfast that is largely consumed to this day They also created an internationally recognized emblem of British cuisine and a truly national morming custom

The British have a wide variety of breakfast options Some of the most popular ones are:

Trang 8

Full English Breakfast (Aka The Fry up): This is a traditional breakfast that includes eggs, bacon, sausages, black pudding, baked beans, grilled tomato, fried bread, and toast It is usually served with jams, marmalades, tea/coffee, and orange juice

Kedgeree: This is a breakfast dish that originated in India during the British Raj It consists of hard-boiled eggs, smoky fish, and rice that is seasoned with a blend of warm curry spices, including ground fenugreek and coriander It is a popular breakfast option in England, and in Scotland, it is traditionally prepared with smoked haddock

Potato Scone: This is a regional variant of the savory griddle scone made with mashed potatoes, butter, and flour It is an essential part of every full Scottish breakfast and is usually served with fried eggs, porridge, bacon, sliced sausage, or the oat-studded black pudding These breakfast staples are traditionally eaten hot, while the cold ones are usually reheated either by toasting or frying

The gentry, an English institution that saw itself as the cultural heirs of the Anglo- Saxons and the keepers of the old English country lifestyle, is credited with creating the idea

of the English breakfast as a national cuisine in the fourteenth century

The origins of the English breakfast may be traced back to the gentry's country homes, where they developed their custom of social hospitality and defined what an appropriate Anglo-Saxon meal was

Those with "noble and distinguished blood," landowners, and "genteel" families of long heritage were all thought to be part of the gentry, a privileged elite that also included senior clergy members and the offspring of titled families

The gentry considered it their responsibility to preserve the customs, beliefs, way of life, and gastronomy of the classic Anglo-Saxon rural community The pre-hunt meal was seen as

a very significant social event in the communities around England's big country homes, which were home to gentry members and served as the hubs of enormous country estates

In keeping with the ancient Anglo-Saxon custom of hospitality, the gentry were well- known for their sumptuous breakfast spreads and would serve friends, family, and neighbors Before a long trip, the morning after their regular parties, and on their first visitors! arrival, they relished eating "full English breakfasts”

The gentry utilized the breakfast table as a platform to showcase the 'wealth’ of their estates through the superior quality of meats, vegetables, and other items sourced from nearby regions It was also an opportunity to showcase the culinary prowess of the cooks, who served

a variety of traditional Anglo-Saxon breakfast fare to the house's occupants and visitors to pick from and nibble on

Chapter 3: Compare the breakfast culture of the two countries

Breakfast seems to be the most necessary meal of the day Not only does it help us have more energy for a busy day, but it is also equally important for our health The breakfast culture of countries around the world is very diverse, besides England and Vietnam cannot be ignored The two countries are equally important in their breakfast, but there are also clear differences Follow our findings below to better understand this issue

Regarding similarities, people in the two countries strongly favor bread and eggs in the morning In England, we have toast, fried bread, fried eggs, and in Vietnam we also have Banh mi op la But the special feature here is not only eggs, Vietnamese people also eat them with other foods such as Cha lua - pig sausage or pieces of roasted pork belly The second similarity is that coffee is always a great choice for a good morning In the England, we enjoy breakfast with a cup of hot coffee, in Vietnam it's no less But coffee in Vietnam is quite diverse Coffee in Vietnam has a rich flavor, often served with rich condensed milk It's great

to sip a cup of coffee every morning

On the other hand, while there are similarities, there are also some differences The first difference is in the form of food Instead, the British choose to eat dry foods in the morning such as bacon, sausages, black pudding topped with oatmeal and many other dishes Accompanied by coffee and healthy fruit juices In Vietnam, people choose to eat liquid dishes such as Pho and Vermicelli for their breakfast Partly because a liquid breakfast will help them feel more comfortable and easier to digest than solid foods The second difference

is that in England people rarely eat foods that are high in starch Almost all of their breakfasts include fruits or vegetables to balance their diet Compared to Vietnam, they eat quite a lot of starch such as Com Tam Rice contains a lot of starch, which can lead to being overweight, but many people find that eating shredded rice for breakfast helps them feel fuller than other foods

Through what we have learned, there are some similarities between the two countries! breakfast cultures Besides, there are also differences that highlight the cultures of the two countries

Trang 10

CONCLUSIONS The research is intended to show the difference between breakfast culture in England and Vietnam, helping readers see the diversity of culinary culture around the world Each place has different dishes and ways of eating, but there are also similarities, such as strongly favoring bread and eggs and drinking coffee every morning Or there are many outstanding differences between the two countries, such as in the UK, where they often do not eat rice in the morning, but that is a great choice in Vietnam In general, each country's eating culture is different But there are also outstanding points that make that country unique Considering all the issues in the article, we can see that the contrast between the two countries is extremely clear Readers can better understand the typical differences in breakfast culture in the UK and Vietnam
