Chapter 1 : Introduction

1 Background of the study

Everyone 1s realizing the importance of communication skills, which is why educators frequently include them in the curriculum Students frequently lack these abilities because they downplay the value of communication skills and because the approaches to teaching and_evaluating these abilities are insufficient So, if students have a positive perception of the importance of communication skills, it is likely that they will be more motivated to engage in learning and practicing those skills, ultimiately leading to positive learning outcomes (Petrovic, Jurai; Pale, Predrag, 2021) On the other hand, pupils are less likely to be motivated and engaged if they have low expectations for achievement or

do not perceive the value in the activity or skill These skills are important not only for academic success, but also for success in future careers and in life in general (Yagcioglu,

communication skills when they are aware of how important they are This drive may result in improved learning

Students now live in a digital environment that has affected both their way of life and how they study English teachers are aware that a variety of educational technologies may improve and increase the effectiveness of their lessons (Gomleksiz, 2004) Launched in American technology company Meta Platforms In this approach, Facebook provides a platform that is more approachable for learning, such as Messenger, where students can

interact and share knowledge via chatting online or face-to-face calling In 2021,

Facebook has reached 2.89 million users, becoming the most popular SNS application (Statista Research Department 2021) The number is still rising until the present time, in the three months leading up to April 2023, the overall number people who use Facebook each month reached by around 26 million people (Data Reportal, 2023) According to Blattner and Fiori (2009), Facebook can be utilized to boost motivation and enhance performance for English language learmers as well as for real-world language contact Based on Kern & Warscheur (2000), language learning and teaching activities are carried

instructional benefits to teachers Venable (2012) also states that teachers can use Facebook for class projects in order to improve communication Social media platforms can be used as learning technologies, and there has been an increase in research on Facebook usage among college students in recent years (Ahern, L., Feller, J., & Nagle, T skills through writing exercises (Suthiwartnarueput and Wasanasomsithi, 2012) Eren’s study (2012) in students opinion based on six critertum, including the use of Facebook in school and the improvement of language skills It is also obvious in Vietnamese

and collaboration among students Nevertheless, a large percentage of Van Lang University's second-year English majors are unaware of the impact Facebook has on their interpersonal abilities There have been few studies on the effects of Facebook on English language learners’ communication abilities in both written and spoken skills (Dweikat, impact of Facebook on the social interaction of VLU 2nd year English major students

2 Aims of the study

Communication abilities are essential on a daily basis, especially in today's fast-paced world The majority of university students communicate via Facebook, which has an effect on their ability to communicate in person Students must have a certain level of

Trang 4

skill to succeed To accomplish this, we must first recognize the effects of Facebook on

student communication

Furthermore, after using the Facebook application, second-year students at Van Lang University realize that they are experiencing the identical effect as the majority of the students in Viet Nam while using Facebook, and their perspectives are divided into two categories: According to one group of students, using Facebook doesn’t not only help them improve their communication skills, but it also harms their interaction in social communities Others, on the other hand, believe that by expanding their social network, Facebook can help them improve their communication skills

Based on_these findings, the primary goal ofthis research is to look at both sides of the effect of Facebook on the social interaction of VLU 2nd year English major students

3 Significance of the study

This study helps students improve their communication skills while also demonstratin

communication skills are required for this Without this, effective communication is impossible (Shamim Akhter, et al, (2020) Students who improve their effective speaking skills gain more confidence to deliver their ideas rather than criticize them, which corresponds to the characteristics of children as learners (Crisianita,S and B Mandasari 2022) Social media allows lecturers to create and share a variety of content using web- based tools, and it can be used for interpersonal communication, information exchange, and discussion on a variety of topics (N Draskovic, et al, 2013) Everyone can gain a clear understanding of "a learnmg community" and its educational benefits as a result of this research It is a learning environment in which both students and educators can actively and intentionally collaborate to build Knowledge A community is a different kind of long-lasting, renewable relationship between individuals, which is known as a signature trait of human social evolution ụ itworth & de Moor, 2002) In addition to assisting in educational fields, usmg technology in this manner could benefit a wide range

of people, including academic researchers, local residents, and business workers Tools like Facebook continue to evolve, it is critical for researchers to continue their work and look into the effects social networks have on higher education (Boogart, 2006)

Chapter 2: Literature review

2.1 Definition of keyterms

2.1.1 Communication skills

Communication is the most important part of any educational process, its purpose is the Communication also helps to convey, information clearly and ensures that learners understand the message being communicated which was analyzed by calculating central

indexes using SPSS software Despite the research seems to have the acceptable

communication skills are central to interpersonal interactions and social relationships (Culturally Adapting Psychotherapy for Asian Heritage Populations (2016) It was iscovered that the commonly used Skill streaming series for children and adolescents

communication skills are included in social skills mterventions for many problem areas,

they are promment in interventions targeting ASD Communication skills contribute to

building effective and harmonious relationships between people, which 1s a pretty good result Fundamentally, the current study seeks to assess students’ perceptions of the role

of teachers’ communication skills in their academic success (Khan Alamgir, et al, (2017)) Therefore, a comprehensive questionnaire model that carnes information including socioeconomic and demographic aspects of the study is designed by the researcher to achieve the stated objectives And empirical data on the role of teachers’ communication skills on students' academic success was obtained from (418, thirty percent 30 from each university) sample of 14 universities in Pakistan Consequently, it is important for individuals to develop strong communication skills to be successful in their personal and professional lives Effective communication is the key, succeed in any educational process It not only helps to transfer knowledge but also helps build relationships and understanding between people

2.1.2 Facebook

Each study defines Facebook in its own way Boyd and Ellison (2018) define a social

network as a platform for users to share personal information, show connections, and

considered to be a teaching and learning environment Empirical methods such as testing, observation and survey are used to investigate the effect of Facebook learming opportunities to the speaking skills development of the experimental student group Although the result showed that Facebook 1s beneficial for mcreasing vocabulary and grammar knowledge for communication, it is limited by the implementation criod (one semester) which may lead to lack of validity and reliability As mentioned by Claudia Barbosa, Facebook can be used for free to help with the improvement of oral abilities Despite the fact that the study's method is not unique, the results are exceedingly detailed and comprehensive, it_has demonstrated the viability of carrying out oral skill- development activities For language learners who need to practice speaking in order to advance in proficiency, this has been especially helpful Moreover, it has also created new opportunities for engaging and interactive language learning experiences

2.1.3 Second years learner

Many studies have been conducted on the presentation skills of second language students,

as well as their difficulties in improving their speaking skills Yu.Yu Kovalyova et al (2015) investigate the project-based learning as one of the most effective and_ fruitful approaches to teaching English as a foreign Janguage to engineering students at Russian

students as part of project-based learning Her research has positive impact on the students' EFL proficiency in the science research area of engineering activity Although

Trang 6

communication, skills and applying them to engineering training, there is a lack of 1nformation and a basic method

Lisa M Lundquist (2013) studies show that the increased use of oral assessments

throughout the pharmacy curriculum may help students gain confidence in and self-assess

their communication skills Four hundred and one (97.3%) students agreed to participate

in this study The teachers must find ways to help their students open up and build trust in order to give students the opportunity to use higher-order thinking skills, communicate

demonstrate their command of spoken presentation content However, in both the

individual and group oral assessments, students’ self-assessments of communication skills

Therefore, the teachers must help the students open_up and gain trust in order for them to use higher-order thinking skills and communicate effectively

Based_on Kedir Abda (2017), investigate the impact, of speaking instruction on second-

collaborated on this research paper Students did not practice speaking skills due to a lack

of desire, fear of making mistakes, self-confidence, vocabulary, exposure, and

background experience, according to the findings Students should boost their self-

esteem, recognize the value of making mistakes, take ownership of their education, and expand their vocabulary and grammar Knowledge To evaluate and activate speaking skills, teachers should use all of their abilities, However, this assessment is not very proactive Students must improve their self-confidence and grammar knowledge in order

to practice speaking skills

We will use studies from Kedir Abda (2017) for this research because they are the most effective and comprehensive Because the practical research method used with second- year students, student accessibility, and especially accurate statistics Furthermore, it 1s carried out by two faculty members and 100 selected students

2.2 Related research

2.2.1 The value of Facebook contributes to the communication skills

Today, Facebook is an extremely popular app in people's lives Social media has significantly increased in recent years, enabling millions to create online profiles and share personal information, particularly in a hectic lifestyle According to Gafni, R., & Deri, M (2012), Facebook allows students to form relationships, access information, and seek assistance from classmates, allowing for immediate assistance with exam- related tasks and improving their learning experience Factors contributing to this trend include family members’ screen time and various interests Mustaffa et al (2011) claimed that Facebook is only a means of communication with other friends and as a way to reconnect them to their old friends Facebook improves family communication as it provides a platform to people to interact Facebook is a powerful communication tool that promotes familial bonds and contributes to a harmonious society (Joo, T M., & Teng, C

, 2017) It improves relationships and communication among local users, contributing to

a more united society It is impractical to deny that Facebook assists people, particularly students, in improving their communication skills A study conducted by the National School Boards Association in 2007 discovered a positive relationship between Facebook usage and student performance According to Wang (2007), the use of a Facebook group

as an LMS and the students’ perceptions of utilizing it in their classes Facebook allows teachers and students to communicate about educational technology, evaluate its technical and pedagogical features, and stay up to date on advancements Teachers can also use

encourage educational posts, homework, and messages (Raman,2014)

2.2.2 Utilizing Facebook as a tool to improve communication skills

Trang 7

We are all aware that the majority of people nowadays communicate through social

students use_ Facebook for a variety of activities and in different percentages; the proportion of students using these sites for social activities 1s 70.1%, and the percentage

as a education tool can help students overcome obstacles that prevent them from

developin: their English communication skills According to Dweikat (2016), social networks (such as Facebook) are important settings for knowledge sharing and a good opportunity for collaborative knowledge construction Bdaiwi (2017) noticed that shy students in traditional classes struggle with engagement, while Facebook improves confidence and self-esteem to_help them improve their communication skills Mentioned

by Selwyn (2007) that part of what makes Facebook appealing is how simple and casual

it is for students to connect with one another over education, Additionally, Facebook- spelling and communicate Mryasone (2017) point that cooperative learning can enhance students’ mentality and communication, also improve students’ learning attitudes Dweikat (2016) study prove that students who used Facebook performed better than non- improved English communication, increased social interaction, and prepared students for collaborative learning

2.2.3 Facebook along with its downsides

Facebook brings people many benefits both physically and mentally However, if people abuse it too much, the harmful effects of Facebook will affect them a lot D Fodeman, et

al (2009) said that we worried about today's youth growing up 1n.a world where they are always connected without a break Numerous our children have little to no "down time." Some people find it challenging to cut off their social life Being without their cell phones for a few hours even makes some people more anxious D Nikbin, et al (2021) claimed that a strong and uncontrolled need to be online constantly is a common sign of Facebook addiction, which is caused by excessive usage of the social media platform Other aspects

of life are negatively impacted by this desire It is a form of behavioral addiction as well

as online addiction Dr Sam Thomas (2011) revealed that SNS addiction is seen by

internet addiction and talking, which Facebook gives and allows everyone to have instant might result in addiction, individuals' mental health is also a problem And when they spend too much time in social life, they will not focus on their studies and their grades will suffer With increased use, this new technology also has drawbacks like lower GPAs

( Boogart V R M, 2006) However, we cannot deny the benefits that Facebook brings

irst of all, it is a huge source of information and knowledge about life and the world, updated daily and hourly that books cannot convey to students This new technology ( Facebook) hel s students build social communication and connections with the advent

of Facebook in 2004 ( Boogart, V R M 2006) Hence, we totally agree with Godwin-

communication and human interaction For instance, students can use Facebook to

communicate with fellow students about class assignments, group projects, or teachers

Facebook's support for information exchange, thereby helping us develop more communication skills Facebook activities could help you get better at speaking, listening, and even pronouncing English, among other things ( BI AlSaleem, 2018)

Due to the significant rise of social media, Facebook has become a subject for everyone to discuss about We can deny the benefits that Facebook has brought to life, but many people still believe coming with that is a devastating effect Many research has been conducted to talk about this matter, and it’s still going on_until nowadays Researchers then rely on the practical uses of Facebook to show how Facebook affected academic life or to discuss how it’s affected They also have mentioned that Facebook

Trang 8

allows students in navigating their academic lives, and social network can transform into learnmg space by mtroducing to people around like schoolmate or lecturers Given the huge amount of data and variable level of it, the needs for Facebook’s capabilities to incentivize student communication skill and incorporating Facebook into teaching and

learning in the Van Lang educational system is a must While Facebook still has a dual

side, the ability it has made can be considered to develop an effective tool for Van Lang

University’s students and for many people who have looked Facebook as a potential

academic tool This continues to build and added up to the idea that Facebook could become an evolutionary step in emerging social media platforms into education According to that, this ‘study aims to support the idea above, also investigating how Facebook usage affected students at Van Lang University's communicative English skills

Trang 9

Chapter 3: Methodology

3.1 Research design

The current study looks at the effects of Facebook on communication skills among Van Lang University's second-year English major students A mixed research design is used in order to obtain information related to the research problem Online

questionnaires were used to collect both qualitatrve and quantitative data To achieve the goals of the study, the quantitative research method will be used The

questionnaires were created in order that the researcher could easily summarize and analyze the collected data The data collected for the study is intended to learn about students’ attitudes toward using Facebook to communicate All participants were asked to answer all of the questions truthfully

3.2 Sample

For the purposes of this research, online interviews were used Online interviews are personal and structured interviews, whose aim is to identify participant’s emotions, feelings, and opinions regarding a particular research subject Studies based on data gathered via online interviews follow the essential methods and concepts required in any study, as well as those related especially with qualitative interview research, and then add an essential dimension technology The fundamental advantage of online interviews is that they include personal and direct communication between

interviewers and respondents, as well as eliminating non-response rates; nevertheless, interviewers must have gained the essential abilities to carry out an interview successfully The goal of this research was to examine the influence of technology on EFL As a result, Van Lang University's 2nd year students were picked, who were learning English as a major to analyze their experiences and discover how Facebook may affect their communication skills The majority of students who have participated

in this study are from the first facility of Van Lang University in district 1 but there are some others who are from the other facilities as well

27 multiple-choice questions with the exception of three regarding the participants' personal information and includes two main forms: Choose multiple choices, includes

at least two options and a maximum of five options That includes choices, for personal opinion and Yes/No question, attempts to gather common responses from the 2nd years learners in Van Lang University about the effect of Facebook on their
