BODY DEVELOPMENT

1 Definition of Culture Differences

To learn about culture, we need to understand simply: Culture is the sum total of material and spiritual values created by human beings in the course of history

Cultural differences are evident in many aspects such as customs, values, beliefs,

behaviors and lifestyles These aspects can be observed through aspects such as language religion, art, cuisine, festivals, and social behavior

Customs and rituals are prominent elements, like greetings, weddings, or religious ceremonies For example, in the United States, shaking hands is a common way of greeting, while in Vietnam, bowing is an important part of social etiquette

Cultural values also differ between cultures, as Vietnamese value family and filial piety, while Americans value individuality and freedom

Beliefs and religion are important factors in culture, influencing people's way of life

and thinking Religions such as Buddhism and Christianity all have their own teachings and rituals Behavior and behavior in society also show Cultural differences For example,

in Chinese culture, it is considered polite to give a gift and not open it right in front of the giver, while in some other places, it is normal to open a gift as soon as it is received Language is an important means of communicating and transmitting culture, with

expressions, proverbs, and idioms that reflect the characteristics of each culture Art and

cuisine are clear expressions of culture, with typical art forms and specialty dishes The festival is an opportunity to honor and preserve traditional cultural values, such as the

Lunar New Year of the Vietnamese people or the Lantern Festival in China These differences not only enrich our lives but also help us understand and respect each other in

a diverse and globalized world

For example, in the US, people often communicate in a straightforward and direct

way In contrast, in Vietnam, communication can be more indirect and respectful to

maintain harmony in the relationship

Trang 9

Next, in terms of time management, Westerners often strictly adhere to time and schedules Meanwhile, in some Asian countries such as China, time flexibility may be

more acceptable, depending on the specific context and situation

The decision-making process is also a big difference Companies in the U.S often

have a quick and vertical decision-making process, based on management Meanwhile, in

China, this process may take longer because it requires consensus from various levels Attitudes toward work also reflect cultural differences The work culture in some

European countries tends to balance work and personal life In contrast, in some Asian

countries, working hard and spending a lot of time at work can be taken more seriously

and appreciated

These differences reflect the cultural values of each country and strongly influence

the work environment and how employees interact with each other

2 Analysis aspects of cultural differences in working between the USA and China

“ The difference in working between the USA and Chinese is expressed first of all in

aspect: Individualism — Collectivism

In the USA, they uphold of the “ego”, each person has their own voting viewpoint This means, in their work, they are always bold in expressing their thoughts and opinions When they feel their boss's decisions are unsatisfactory, they’re willing to communicate directly and express their personal views Besides that, they emphasis on working independently Americans value the final results they achieve and emphasize individual capability They believe that what they contribute and what they demonstrate will determine their position, their worth, and the outcome of the work, so Americans tend to

work hard and independently And, opinion is expressed by personal thoughts

In contrast to Americans, Chinese people emphasize the awareness of "us" In any job, they pay attention to the common standards of the organization and the community; any

opinions expressed must align with the rules and common interests of the group and everyone involved Moreover, they emphasis on connection Because of the emphasis on

the awareness of "us" and valuing relationships over tasks, Chinese people tend to prioritize connection in their work They believe that integrating into the community will

lead to protection during difficult times, so they are loyal and place great importance on their connections with the community, organization, or work group Not only that, but opinion also expressed must maintain co — operation Otherwise, they will not have good relationships with their colleagues, making it difficult to ask for help in times of troubl e and challenging to advance in their careers

“ The second different aspect that | want to mention is power distance

In the USA, the hierarchy is understood as the difference in roles in an organization This means the hierarchy is set up only for the convenience of dividing tasks and roles in

work; no significant distinction between boss and subordinates like: the boss needing to

be respected or the boss's opinions always being right, So that, the ideal boss is a democratic person Consultation with subordinates is common because in the USA,

everyone is equal, with no distinction between boss and employee; each person has their

own voting rights and can express personal opinions

In Chinese, the hierarchical system is synonymous with inequality In the workplace ,

the boss is a person of power, and everyone must show respect and pay attention to maintaining a good relationship with the boss because they believe the boss will care for

and help them more in your work and career With them, the ideal boss is an authoritarian

person but kind-hearted And, in contrast to the USA, subordinates are often required to

perform certain tasks instead of being given the opportunity to vote and choose tasks that

align with their abilities and strengths

* The next aspect is uncertainty avoidance

When considering the factor of uncertainty avoidance, China and the United States

exhibit a clear and significant difference in their approaches to handling ambiguity and

risk According to Hofstede’s model, the United States has a low uncertainty avoidance

index, scoring 46 points, reflecting a society that is generally comfortable with risk and ambiguity In American work environments, uncertainty is often seen as a natural part of life and is even embraced as an opportunity for innovation and adaptability This perspective encourages creative problem-solving, independent thinking, and a flexible approach to work Employees in the U.S are usually more willing to experiment, adjust,

and pivot in response to new challenges, relying less on detailed rules or fixed processes
