INTRODUCTION

Background

Vocabulary is essential for language proficiency, allowing learners to effectively understand and communicate ideas A strong vocabulary enhances reading and writing skills and overall language competence, particularly for English Language Learners who face challenges in vocabulary acquisition Innovative tools, like Duolingo, are crucial for promoting vocabulary learning and retention Duolingo offers gamified lessons and interactive exercises, making it appealing and user-friendly for high school students Despite its popularity, there is limited research on its specific impact on vocabulary acquisition among high school students This action research aims to explore how high school students perceive and utilize Duolingo for English vocabulary learning, ultimately assessing its effectiveness as a supplementary educational tool The findings will provide valuable insights for educators on integrating Duolingo into vocabulary instruction, highlighting its potential benefits for learning motivation, engagement, and attention span.

Rationale for the Study

The rationale for this study is to investigate the perceptions and practices in using Duolingo as a digital English vocabulary learning tool of high school students

Duolingo is a game-based online platform designed for interactive vocabulary practice, utilizing competition, collaboration, and multimedia to boost motivation and engagement in language learning Despite research supporting the effectiveness of digital games in education, there is limited understanding of students' perceptions and practices regarding the use of these language-learning tools.

Vocabulary acquisition is vital for language development and academic success, particularly in today's globalized world where English proficiency is essential Effective communication in English enhances opportunities for higher education, career advancement, and cross-cultural interactions Learning vocabulary is key to developing language skills, allowing learners to understand and express ideas accurately and fluently Consequently, exploring effective strategies and tools for vocabulary acquisition is critically important.

The evolution of technology has transformed language learning by providing innovative platforms that enhance language skills Duolingo, a widely-used language learning app, is recognized for its gamified approach and user-friendly design High school students, as digital natives, are particularly attracted to technology-driven learning tools Exploring their perceptions and practices in utilizing Duolingo for English vocabulary acquisition can offer important insights into the tool's effectiveness in educational settings.

Research on Duolingo's effectiveness in language learning has largely overlooked high school students' vocabulary acquisition This age group has unique learning needs and challenges that differ from other demographics Investigating high school students' experiences, attitudes, and strategies while using Duolingo for vocabulary learning is essential to address this research gap and gain a deeper understanding of the tool's effectiveness in educational settings.

Aim and Objectives of the Study

The aim of this study is to investigate high school students' perceptions and practices of using Duolingo for English vocabulary learning

The main objectives of this study are as follows:

- To investigate high school students' perceptions of the use of Duolingo for English vocabulary learning, and

- To explore high school students’ practices of using Duolingo for English vocabulary learning.

Research Questions

This study considers the following research questions:

1 What are high school students’ perceptions of the use of Duolingo for English vocabulary learning?

2 What are high school students’ practices of using Duolingo for English vocabulary learning?

Scope of the Study

This study explores high school students' perceptions of Duolingo as a tool for English vocabulary learning and examines their practices in utilizing the app for vocabulary acquisition Data was collected through surveys and interviews to gain insights into students' perspectives and behaviors regarding the use of Duolingo in their language learning journey.

This study was carried out at Le Trung Kien High School in the Dong Hoa District of Phu Yen Province during the 2023-2024 academic year The research focused on 10th-grade students who frequently use Duolingo to enhance their English vocabulary skills.

The research explored high school students' use of Duolingo for English vocabulary learning, focusing on their attitudes, motivations, preferred strategies, and perceived benefits and challenges While the study provided insights into students' perceptions and practices, it did not evaluate the overall effectiveness of Duolingo or its impact on other language skills like speaking, listening, or reading Employing qualitative methods such as interviews and surveys, the study gathered rich data on student experiences, alongside quantitative performance metrics and usage statistics from the Duolingo platform.

The findings of this study are specific to 10th grade students at Le Trung Kien High School and are not applicable to other high school contexts or grade levels Nonetheless, the research outcomes offer a foundation for future investigations and provide valuable insights for educators and policymakers in comparable educational environments.

Significance of the Study

Vygotsky's research (1978) highlights that knowledge is actively constructed through social interaction and meaningful experiences In vocabulary acquisition, students’ understanding of the relevance and contextual application of words is essential for effective learning They build their vocabulary through exposure, practice, and collaboration, alongside reflecting on their personal learning journeys.

METHODOLOGY

Research Approach

This study investigates high school students' perceptions and practices regarding the use of Duolingo for learning English vocabulary Employing a mixed-methods design, the research combines quantitative surveys with qualitative interviews to collect comprehensive data This approach seeks to provide a deeper understanding of students' experiences, attitudes, and preferences towards Duolingo as a game-based learning platform for vocabulary acquisition.

A quantitative survey was conducted with 10th-grade high school students who utilized Duolingo for English vocabulary learning The survey aimed to evaluate students' perceptions of Duolingo, including their usage frequency, duration, and perceived effectiveness in enhancing vocabulary knowledge Additionally, it measured students' motivation, satisfaction, and perceived ease of use with the platform The collected data provided valuable quantitative insights into students' overall experiences and practices related to Duolingo The survey questionnaire was adapted from prior studies that explored the perceptions and usage of Duolingo in educational contexts.

In addition to the survey, qualitative interviews with 4 to 6 participants were conducted to gain in-depth insights into their experiences using Duolingo for English vocabulary learning These interviews examined students' motivations, perceived benefits and challenges, preferred features of the app, and suggestions for improvement The qualitative data gathered offered a deeper understanding of students' perceptions, attitudes, and behaviors toward Duolingo.

The interview protocol was crafted in alignment with the research objectives and relevant literature on technology-assisted language learning, aiming to encourage participants to share their thoughts and experiences openly while providing detailed responses.

The quantitative survey data were analyzed through descriptive statistics, including frequencies, means, and standard deviations, to effectively summarize participants' perceptions and practices Additionally, inferential statistics, such as correlation analysis, were employed to investigate the relationships between various variables.

The qualitative interview data were transcribed and analyzed through thematic analysis, leading to the identification of key themes and patterns Codes were assigned to specific segments of data, which were then organized into categories and subcategories This structured approach facilitated the recognition of common themes and allowed for an exploration of variations in participants' experiences.

This study utilizes a qualitative research approach to explore the intricate experiences of students using Duolingo, revealing valuable insights into their attitudes, engagement, and perceived benefits By integrating both qualitative and quantitative data, researchers gain a comprehensive understanding of high school students' perceptions and practices regarding Duolingo's impact on their English vocabulary learning.

Data Collection

This study utilized a combination of survey questionnaires and semi-structured interviews to effectively gather in-depth insights into high school students' perceptions and practices regarding the use of Duolingo for enhancing their English vocabulary skills.

A survey was conducted to gather quantitative data from 256 Grade 10 students at Le Trung Kien High School, focusing on their perceptions of Duolingo and usage practices The survey featured Likert-scale items, multiple-choice questions, and open-ended questions, and was distributed online through Google Forms to ensure easy access and convenience for participants.

Semi-structured interviews were conducted with six Duolingo users to gain deeper insights into their motivations, benefits, challenges, and suggestions for improvement The interviews were recorded, transcribed, and analyzed to enhance the survey data.

Ethical approval was obtained, and participants were informed about the study's purpose, confidentiality, and their right to withdraw Consent forms ensured voluntary participation

Survey responses were recorded in Google Forms, and interview recordings and transcripts were securely stored This combined approach provided a robust dataset for a nuanced analysis of students' experiences with Duolingo

This study took place at Le Trung Kien High School in Dong Hoa District, Phu Yen Province, during the 2023-2024 academic year The school was selected for its proactive approach to integrating technology-assisted language learning, particularly through the use of Duolingo for enhancing English vocabulary acquisition.

Le Trung Kien High School, originally the second branch of Ngo Gia Tu High School in Hoa Vinh commune, was officially established by the People's Committee of Phu Khanh province in September 1983 Over nearly 40 years, the school has grown significantly from just 10 classes, 383 students, and 10 teachers to 37 classes and over 90 faculty members.

Le Trung Kien High School was recognized as meeting national standards, and this was the first high school in the province to be recognized as meeting standards In the 2023-

2024 school year, the total number of students in the school is nearly 1,600 students

The study focused on 10th grade students from Le Trung Kien School during the 2023-2024 academic year, comprising a total of 378 students Out of these, 256 responses were collected from the survey, including 133 male and 123 female students The selection of 10th graders was intentional, as they often use Duolingo as a supplementary tool for enhancing their English vocabulary This research aimed to explore their perceptions and practices regarding the use of Duolingo for vocabulary improvement.

The participant sample size was carefully chosen based on practical considerations and data saturation to ensure a thorough understanding of the research topic Participants were selected using a purposive sampling method, focusing on 10th-grade students who have actively utilized Duolingo for learning English vocabulary.

This study focuses on students from Le Trung Kien High School to examine their unique experiences and perspectives regarding the use of Duolingo for vocabulary learning By exploring this specific educational context, the research aims to enhance the understanding of how Duolingo is effectively utilized in a Vietnamese high school environment.

This study utilizes a mixed-methods research design to explore high school students' perceptions and practices in utilizing Duolingo for learning English vocabulary By integrating qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis methods, this approach provides a thorough examination of the topic, as outlined by Creswell & Plano Clark (2006).

3.2.3.1 Survey Questionnaire Surveys were used to gather data on students’ perceptions of Duolingo as a game-based learning platform The survey questions explored students’ attitudes towards the platform, their engagement levels, and their perceived usefulness of Duolingo for vocabulary learning

A questionnaire is defined as a tool where respondents give written answers to questions or select options that reflect their views In this research, a closed-ended questionnaire was created using Google Forms, drawing on insights from prior studies in the field to shape its design.

The quantitative data collected from closed-ended survey questions were analyzed through both descriptive and inferential statistics Descriptive statistics, including frequencies, means, and standard deviations, were utilized to summarize the data effectively To explore relationships and differences between variables, inferential statistics such as t-tests and chi-square tests were employed The statistical analysis was conducted using software tools like Microsoft Excel.

The qualitative data collected from open-ended survey questions and interviews were analyzed through thematic analysis, which involved identifying recurring themes, patterns, and categories This process included coding the data, grouping similar codes into themes, and interpreting their meanings To enhance the organization and analysis of the qualitative data, software tools such as Otter.ai were utilized.

Integrating both quantitative and qualitative data allowed for a comprehensive understanding of the research topic, enabling a comparison of findings to identify converging or diverging patterns This approach facilitated a more nuanced interpretation of the results.

The analyzed data were interpreted according to the research objectives and questions, revealing significant patterns, trends, and relationships This interpretation was informed by relevant literature and theories, allowing the researchers to draw meaningful conclusions.

To validate the research findings, the researcher utilized member checking and peer debriefing strategies Member checking entailed sharing the findings with participants to verify the accuracy of their experiences, while peer debriefing involved gathering feedback from fellow researchers or experts to ensure the reliability of the interpretations and conclusions.

The research findings reveal that students perceive Duolingo as an effective tool for learning English vocabulary, highlighting its user-friendly interface, motivational features, and overall benefits in enhancing their language skills.

4.1.1.1 Survey Results In the first part of the questionnaire questions, five questions out of 10 answered students’ perceptions of using Duolingo for English vocabulary learning The questions are about the benefits of using Duolingo to learn English, specifically in terms of vocabulary acquisition and practice The students find that Duolingo helps them easily remember vocabulary, understand, and practice it, and feel more motivated to learn Additionally, Duolingo is praised for being a useful and convenient tool that is easy to use The percentage of the data analysis can be seen in the following table

According to the data, 57.03% of students strongly agreed that the Duolingo application significantly aids in vocabulary retention, while 33.98% also expressed strong agreement Only a small percentage of students remained neutral (8.20%), and a mere 0.78% strongly disagreed, with no students indicating disagreement This analysis highlights the effectiveness of Duolingo in enhancing vocabulary memorization among students.

According to Table 1, a significant majority of high school students view Duolingo as an effective tool for enhancing their English vocabulary retention, with over 91% expressing agreement or strong agreement This overwhelming support highlights the positive reception of Duolingo's gamified learning and repetitive practice methods, further reinforced by the minimal number of students who disagreed with this sentiment.

Duolingo effectively engages students in vocabulary learning, leading to improved retention of new words The platform's interactive and repetitive exercises enhance memory retention by providing repeated exposure to vocabulary in diverse contexts.

These findings underscore the potential of Duolingo as a valuable supplementary tool in English vocabulary instruction, aligning with the goals of educators to enhance language acquisition through innovative digital platforms

“Duolingo is Very Useful for Learning Vocabulary”

According to the data, a significant majority of high school students find Duolingo to be an effective tool for learning English vocabulary, with 49.22% strongly agreeing and 43.36% agreeing Only a small percentage of students remain neutral (4.30%), disagree (1.95%), or strongly disagree (1.17%).

With nearly 93% of students agreeing or strongly agreeing, it is evident that Duolingo is highly regarded for its effectiveness in aiding vocabulary acquisition

Duolingo's interactive exercises, gamification elements, and adaptive learning algorithms have received a strong positive response from students, indicating their effectiveness in engaging learners This high level of agreement underscores the app's capability to facilitate meaningful vocabulary learning experiences.

While the majority of students find Duolingo beneficial and appreciate its features, a small percentage of students remain neutral or express disagreement, indicating that its effectiveness may vary based on individual learning preferences and expectations.

These findings underscore Duolingo's potential as a powerful supplementary tool in vocabulary instruction, supporting its integration into language learning curricula to enhance student outcomes

“Using Duolingo to Learn English Helps me Easily Understand and Practice

The data indicates that a significant majority of students find learning English through Duolingo to be easy for understanding and practicing vocabulary, with 45.31% agreeing and 44.53% strongly agreeing In contrast, only a small percentage of students expressed neutral (7.42%), disagree (1.17%), or strongly disagree (1.56%) opinions regarding the platform's effectiveness.

According to Table 3, a significant majority of high school students view Duolingo as an effective resource for enhancing their English vocabulary, with nearly 90% expressing agreement or strong agreement This demonstrates that students appreciate Duolingo's interactive and contextual learning approach.

Duolingo's exercises effectively enhance students' vocabulary comprehension and practical application through contextual usage, repetition, and immediate feedback The app's interactive design fosters active learner engagement, supporting effective vocabulary practice and understanding.

While most students benefit from Duolingo, a small percentage express differing learning needs that the app may not fully meet This variation may stem from individual learning styles or expectations regarding vocabulary instruction These findings underscore Duolingo's effectiveness in enhancing vocabulary comprehension and practice, reinforcing its role as a valuable supplementary tool alongside traditional language learning methods.

“Duolingo is Easy to use and Convenient”

A significant majority of high school students find Duolingo to be an easy and convenient tool for learning English vocabulary, with 127 students (49.61%) strongly agreeing and 106 students (41.41%) agreeing with this assessment Only 18 students remained neutral, while a mere 5 students expressed disagreement This data indicates that 91.02% of students either agree or strongly agree on Duolingo’s user-friendly design and functionality, highlighting its effectiveness in supporting English language learning.

Duolingo's user-friendly interface enhances accessibility, enabling students to navigate the app with ease Its convenience is amplified by its availability across various platforms, including smartphones and computers, allowing learners to study anytime and anywhere.

While the majority of students report a positive experience with Duolingo's usability, a small percentage of responses indicating neutrality, disagreement, or strong disagreement suggest that some users may face challenges or have varying preferences for learning tools These difficulties may stem from individual differences in technological proficiency or specific usability concerns encountered by certain users.

Discussion

The study indicates that students find Duolingo to be an effective and convenient resource for learning English vocabulary, with 90.98% of participants agreeing that it enhances their ability to remember, understand, and practice vocabulary while increasing their motivation to learn These findings support previous research highlighting Duolingo's effectiveness in vocabulary acquisition.

Data shows that Duolingo is predominantly used on smartphones, accounting for 84.81% of usage, highlighting the necessity for mobile-friendly design While there is some usage on laptops and desktops at 15.2%, Duolingo should consider optimizing the learning experience for larger screens This aligns with the increasing trend of mobile learning, as students prefer accessing educational resources on their smartphones The convenience and portability of smartphones make them ideal for on-the-go language learning, and Duolingo's gamified approach enhances user engagement.

A study reveals that 68.85% of students prefer using Duolingo at home, indicating a preference for a comfortable learning environment However, 16.51% of students also utilize Duolingo at school, while 14.64% report using it in various other locations This versatility suggests that Duolingo can effectively serve as a supplementary tool for vocabulary reinforcement and pre-lesson introductions Further exploration of the "other places" category may uncover unique learning habits, such as usage during commutes or while waiting for appointments.

Duolingo's evening usage stands out at 62.42%, indicating students may prefer it as a relaxing activity after a hectic day or during a time optimal for memorization tasks like vocabulary learning The notable 18.01% of afternoon users suggests that Duolingo is becoming a part of students' academic routines, potentially used to reinforce classroom concepts during breaks Additionally, the 19.57% of morning users likely take advantage of the cognitive benefits associated with morning study sessions for focused vocabulary acquisition.

Data indicates that vocabulary acquisition is the main reason for using Duolingo, accounting for 62.93% of users This reflects the app's effectiveness in introducing new words in engaging contexts However, the interest in improving listening skills (23.05%) and pronunciation (14.02%) suggests that there is room for enhancement To better meet these needs, incorporating additional listening comprehension exercises and pronunciation practice features could be beneficial.

The interviews with students about their experience using Duolingo for English vocabulary learning demonstrate the app's effectiveness as a valuable educational resource, while also uncovering certain limitations in its functionality.

Student testimonials align with research on mobile language learning applications (MLLAs), highlighting their affordability, accessibility, and engaging methods, as noted by Viberg (2020) Students appreciate Duolingo’s free tier and the convenience it offers, along with the diverse learning activities such as games and interactive exercises Furthermore, the personalized learning approach emphasized by Student 1 showcases MLLAs' ability to adapt to individual learning styles and paces.

Students express concerns about Duolingo's narrow content focus and reliance on passive learning, which is supported by research Viberg (2020) highlights the limitations of mobile language learning applications (MLLAs), noting their emphasis on vocabulary memorization while overlooking essential language components such as grammar and speaking skills This aligns with Student 3's observation regarding Duolingo's insufficient focus on grammar.

The potential for discouragement due to gamification elements, as highlighted by Student 1, presents an additional point for discussion While gamification can be motivating, it’s crucial to find a balance

Students' varied learning strategies with Duolingo reveal key insights for enhancing the app's effectiveness Emphasizing specific methods, such as topic-based lessons and reminders, underscores the significance of customizing learning approaches to align with personal styles and objectives.

Furthermore, the students’ reported benefits in vocabulary acquisition and memorization (Student 5) suggest that Duolingo can be a valuable tool within a broader learning strategy

The interview findings reveal that Duolingo is a valuable tool for learning English vocabulary, offering benefits such as affordability, accessibility, and engaging methods However, its limitations in content scope and emphasis on passive learning highlight the need to complement it with additional learning resources for a more comprehensive educational experience.

By recognizing the advantages and limitations of Duolingo, learners can utilize the app to enhance their English vocabulary effectively Future studies should investigate the long-term efficacy of mobile language learning applications (MLLAs) like Duolingo when used alongside various learning techniques for a more holistic approach to language acquisition.
