LITERATURE REVIEW
Personalized Learning
Personalized learning in language education is rooted in theories of constructivism and self-determination, emphasizing individualized instruction tailored to learners’ needs, interests, and proficiency levels (Vygotsky, 1978; Deci & Ryan, 1985)
Constructivism and personalization are two educational theories that share some common principles and goals but approach learning and instruction from different perspectives
Constructivism is a theory that places a strong emphasis on how students actively construct knowledge through their experiences, interactions, and reflections (Piaget,
1973) Constructivism believes that students are active participants in their education rather than passive recipients of knowledge They construct meaning and understanding when connecting new information to their existing knowledge and experiences Hands-on exercises, problem-solving tasks, and collaboration among learners are common constructivist approaches that enhance knowledge building (Vygotsky, 1978)
On the other hand, personalization focuses on adapting the learning experience to learners’ unique requirements, interests, and abilities It recognizes that students have different learning styles, preferences, and strengths, and aims to provide customized pathways for their learning (Pane et al., 2017) Personalized learning approaches strive to create a more student-centered and adaptive environment where learners have agency and autonomy in their learning journey This may involve individualized
8 instruction, flexible learning pathways, and the use of technology to support personalized learning experiences (Dweck, 2016)
While constructivism and personalization approach learning from different perspectives, there are areas where the two theories coincide Both theories emphasize the active role of learners in the learning process In constructivism, learners actively construct knowledge through their interactions with the environment, while in personalization, learners control and actively engage in setting goals, making choices, and directing their learning Moreover, constructivism and personalization value the importance of connecting new learning experiences to prior knowledge and experiences Constructivism recognizes the significance of learners’ existing knowledge in constructing new understanding, while personalization acknowledges the need to consider learners’ backgrounds and interests to create meaningful and relevant learning experiences
Personalization can be seen as an instructional approach that aligns with the principles of constructivism It draws on constructivist theories that emphasize active engagement and the construction of knowledge Furthermore, it promotes meaningful learning experiences, allows learners to connect to their prior knowledge, and then applies new concepts in authentic contexts
The Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) is a key concept within the sociocultural theory of Lev Vygotsky It represents the gap between what a learner can do independently and what they can achieve with guidance and assistance from a more skilled partner ZPD is not a static zone but rather a dynamic and evolving space in which learners continuously develop and progress in their language acquisition (Vygotsky, 1978) It includes tasks and activities that are slightly beyond the learner’s current level of competence, providing opportunities for growth and learning These supports can take various forms, such as providing explanations, modeling problem- solving strategies, offering prompts or cues, and participating dialogue to foster
9 understanding As learners acquire new knowledge and skills, their ZPD shifts and expands
Vygotsky’s ZPD concept supports personalized learning as it emphasizes the importance of understanding the learner's current abilities and providing appropriate support to help them reach their full potential Personalization aims to meet students within their ZPD, providing challenges that are neither too easy nor too difficult While personalized learning and the ZPD share common goals and principles, it is essential to note that personalized learning is a broader concept that contains various pedagogical approaches beyond just targeting the ZPD For example, personalized learning may involve providing choice and autonomy to learners, allowing them to select topics of interest or learning activities that align with their preferences It may also involve incorporating real-world connections and authentic learning experiences to make the content more relevant and engaging for the learner Personalized learning recognizes that learners have diverse learning styles, preferences, and strengths, and aims to provide customized pathways for their learning (Pane et al., 2017) This approach involves adapting teaching methods, content, pacing, and assessment to match each learner’s requirements
According to Deci and Ryan (2000), Self-Determination Theory (SDT) is a psychological framework that focuses on human motivation, autonomy, and psychological well-being One of the fundamental principles of SDT is autonomy support, which emphasizes the importance of learners having control and choice over their learning experiences In personalized learning, autonomy support can be achieved by providing learners with options and flexibility regarding content, pace, and learning activities
In addition to autonomy support, competence is another important principle of SDT that is relevant to personalized learning SDT highlights the role of competence in motivating individuals Personalized learning can promote competence; it adjusts learning materials and activities to match the learner’s current abilities and allows for
10 growth Personalized learning platforms can improve self-determination and progress, as well as provide appropriately challenging experiences, thereby enhancing learners’ competence (Deci & Ryan, 2000) Moreover, as emphasized by SDT, relatedness plays a significant role in promoting motivation It refers to the importance of social connections and supportive relationships, and can be achieved through many ways Collaborative learning opportunities can be integrated into personalized learning environments, allowing learners to engage with peers, share ideas, and provide feedback to one another Additionally, personalized learning platforms can incorporate features that facilitate communication and interaction between learners and instructors, promoting a supportive learning community (Deci
The integration of SDT and the sociocultural theory provides a comprehensive framework for understanding motivation and learning in sociocultural contexts SDT highlights the importance of autonomy and relatedness, emphasizing the individual’s need for self-direction and meaningful social connections In the sociocultural theory, these needs are fulfilled through social interactions and collaborative learning experiences within the ZPD Learners join activities driven by intrinsic motivation, as they are actively involved in problem-solving, negotiation, and co-construction of knowledge with others
In summary, Self-Determination Theory principles, including autonomy support, competence, relatedness, and intrinsic motivation, can be effectively applied in personalized learning When providing learners with autonomy, tailoring learning experiences to their competence level, fostering social connections, and promoting intrinsic motivation, personalized learning environments can create engaging and meaningful educational experiences that support learners’ motivation, autonomy, and psychological well-being (Deci & Ryan, 2000) The integration of SDT and the sociocultural theory also offers a comprehensive understanding of motivation and learning in sociocultural contexts
Personalized learning can be defined as an instructional approach that aims to customize learning experiences to meet the specific needs, interests, and abilities of individual learners (Pane et al., 2017) It recognizes that students have different learning styles, paces, and preferences, and seeks to provide tailored pathways for achieving learning goals (Dweck, 2016) Unlike traditional classroom settings, where all students receive the same instruction at the same time, personalized learning acknowledges the importance of individual differences and strives to create a more student-centered and adaptive learning environment
At its core, personalized learning refers to educational practices that are specifically designed to meet the unique demands of individual learners (Bulger, 2016) There are two key categories of features: adaptivity and recommendation Adaptivity refers to the ability of educational systems to adjust content, pacing, or instructional strategies based on individual student performance and behavior Recommendation, on the other hand, involves suggesting specific resources, activities, or learning pathways based on a student’s interests, preferences, or prior knowledge These practices may involve varying degrees of customization and are increasingly facilitated through digital apps and platforms
In the realm of technology, personalized learning describes the use of software and online platforms to adapt the educational process to the specific goals, interests, and competencies of students This adaptation is expected to evolve as the student’s learning conditions change (Bulger, 2016) Green et al (2005) examine how digital technologies, such as virtual learning environments, adaptive software, and intelligent tutoring systems, can enable and support personalized learning experiences It identifies four key dimensions of personalization: content, pace, support, and assessment, and discusses how digital technologies can be leveraged to personalize each of these aspects of the learning experience However, distinctions between merely responsive systems and genuinely adaptive systems are often blurred
12 in product descriptions, leading to potential discrepancies in expectations versus actual functionalities
Even in the absence of sophisticated technology, personalization has always been an integral part of effective education Educators have long used their knowledge of student behavior, educational psychology, and subject matter to tailor lessons to the needs of their students (Bransford, Brown, & Cocking, 2000) This form of personalization is evident in daily classroom interactions and is a fundamental component of what is known as learner-centered instruction
Personalized Learning and Adaptive Learning
Feldstein (2016) states that personalized learning is about redesigning teaching methods to individual students It can be challenging to achieve this customization in a classroom with many students, but adaptive learning technologies have made it possible These adaptive technologies use computer algorithms to pinpoint each student’s unique learning needs and offer personalized learning paths in real time (Educause Learning Initiative, 2017) This change has turned computers into more than just tools for sharing information – they now play an active role in enhancing personalized learning experiences
The fundamental mechanisms of adaptive systems are well-established They monitor student activity, interpret performance data, build user models, and then leverage that knowledge to dynamically facilitate the learning process (Paramythis & Loidl- Reisinger, 2004) Nevertheless, implementing adaptive learning technologies is troublesome Technological limitations, ethical concerns around data privacy and bias, and faculty adoption barriers are concerns that must be considered (Taylor et al., 2021) Additionally, the definitional ambiguity around adaptive learning remains a hurdle to widespread implementation and evaluation (Cavanagh et al., 2020)
Despite these challenges, the core promise of adaptive learning – to deliver personalized instruction at scale – is a compelling proposition for education As these systems continue to develop, their ability to enhance student learning, engagement, and outcomes will grow (Taylor et al., 2021)
Adaptive learning uses technology to deliver personalized learning experiences (Gligorea et al 2023; Educause Learning Initiative 2017) It employs data-driven algorithms and artificial intelligence to dynamically adjust instructional content, delivery methods, and pace based on learners’ performance and engagement It promotes effective and efficient learning, maximizes engagement, and improves educational outcomes by adapting to the specific requirements of each student While continuously analyzing learner data, including assessment outcomes, interaction patterns, and progress tracking, adaptive learning systems can provide timely and precise interventions, ensuring learners receive the most relevant and effective materials and activities
The concept of personalized and adaptive learning is leading to a transformative shift in education, moving away from traditional instructor-centered pedagogies towards student-centered approaches (Taylor, Yeung, & Bashet, 2021)
Butoianu et al (2010) examine the role of user context and personalized learning in the development of adaptive e-learning systems The work proposes a framework that leverages the concept of “contextualized attention metadata” (CAM) to enable personalized learning experiences This CAM data includes information about the specific resources accessed, the duration of engagement, the device and location used, as well as other contextual factors The work also emphasizes the importance of federating the CAM data from multiple sources, such as various e-learning platforms and tools used by the learner and highlights the potential for social and collaborative features within the personalized e-learning environment and presents a compelling framework for incorporating user context and personalized learning into the design of adaptive e-learning systems The insights provided by contextualized attention metadata demonstrate how e-learning environments can be tailored to the unique
18 needs and preferences of individual learners, potentially leading to improved engagement, motivation, and learning outcomes
Kem (2022) examines the rise of personalized and adaptive learning platforms as part of the broader shift towards digital and smart learning in education The paper outlines several emerging personalized and adaptive learning platforms, including adaptive tutoring systems, intelligent tutoring systems, and learning management systems with personalization features These platforms leverage data analytics, artificial intelligence, and machine learning to continuously monitor student progress and adapt the learning content and activities accordingly The adoption of these personalized and adaptive learning technologies has the potential to enhance student engagement, motivation, and learning outcomes by catering to individual learner differences (Kem, 2022)
Personalized learning can be confusing because many services claim to be adaptive but are actually responsive Ideally, personalized learning tools should adjust to an individual’s goals, interests, and skills, and change instruction accordingly This level of customization acts like a tutor, responding to a student’s needs as they navigate the learning process, including struggles, setbacks, moments of frustration, boredom, and breakthroughs Adaptive systems aim to mimic and support the flexible and evolving nature of learning, while responsive systems only react to stimuli

Online Platform
Online learning platforms play a crucial role in collecting and analyzing learners’ data, which can provide valuable insights into their self-regulated learning behaviors
It can offer personalized feedback and suggestions for learners to enhance their self- regulated learning by tracking learners’ interactions with the platform, such as time spent on tasks, completion rates, and engagement patterns (Galyon & Carey, 2015) Online platforms can collect and analyze vast amounts of learner interaction data, including clicks, navigation patterns, content engagement, assessment performance, and more This digital trace data can be used to develop detailed and updated learner models that reflect the individual’s strengths, weaknesses, preferences, and progress (Baker & Inventado, 2014) These personalized learner models can then be used to dynamically adapt each student's content, instructional strategies, and feedback It can also provide flexibility in scheduling and location, access to a wide range of educational resources, and opportunities for collaborative learning with peers and instructors (Allen & Seaman, 2017)
However, it is important to acknowledge that online learning platforms also present challenges, such as a lack of face-to-face interaction and potential limitations in personalization (Garrison & Cleveland-Innes, 2005) As noted by Baker and Inventado (2014), though online learning platforms can leverage learning analytics to monitor each student’s engagement, pace of learning, and areas of struggle, implementing personalized online learning experiences also requires careful consideration of privacy, ethics, and data governance
Online language learning has experienced significant growth in recent years Many learners turn to digital platforms for language acquisition due to the convenience, flexibility, and accessibility it offers However, the effectiveness of online language courses can be influenced by learners’ ability to self-regulate their learning process
According to Cho & Jonassen (2009), self-regulated learning refers to learners’ ability to plan, monitor, and regulate their own learning, and it plays a crucial role in fostering autonomous and successful language learning experiences
As Zimmerman (2000) outlines, self-regulation involves a cyclical process of forethought (planning), performance, and self-reflection Students actively design their lessons, keep track of their progress, and then evaluate their results Self- regulated learning is not a one-size-fits-all procedure; rather, it should be customized for each student and for the particular learning activities at hand (Zimmerman, 2002) The transition from traditional face-to-face language learning to online platforms requires learners to adopt higher levels of autonomy and self-regulation Kulusaklı
(2022) found that the high drop-out rate in online language courses is linked to learners’ lack of self-regulated learning skills Online language learning necessitates learners to manage their time effectively, set specific learning goals, and monitor their progress, which can be challenging for those with limited self-regulation skills Online platforms can be designed to support many phases of the self-regulated learning cycle, giving students the support and resources they need to advance During the planning phase, the platform can assist students in setting clear, achievable learning objectives and guide them in selecting appropriate learning activities and resources In the monitoring stage, students can be facilitated through real-time performance tracking, formative assessments, and personalized feedback mechanisms After completing a learning task or activity, students take the time to analyze their performance, evaluate the effectiveness of their strategies, and identify improvement opportunities in the reflection phase This reflective practice is instrumental in closing the loop and preparing students for their next learning challenge Then, when the data is recorded, the platform could adapt and customize the learning experience accordingly, suggesting content, difficulty level, and instructional approaches needed for learners

The study on Onluyen.vn’s impact on English language learning through personalized learning reveals correlations with existing literature on personalized learning platforms and their effect on learner engagement, motivation, and skill development This essay analyzes how the findings align with established theories
46 and research, highlighting both the strengths of personalized digital learning and areas needing improvement
The positive reception of Onluyen.vn’s personalized features aligns with prior research on technology-enhanced personalized learning (TEPL) Research by Holmes et al (2018) and Vesselinov & Grego (2012) on adaptive learning platforms like Duolingo and Moodle demonstrates similar benefits, showing that such platforms can enhance learner satisfaction and performance These studies underscore that personalization leads to more tailored and relevant content, keeping learners more engaged and motivated The findings from the current study support this, as learners on Onluyen.vn reported experiencing improvements in English proficiency and heightened engagement due to the platform’s recommendation features, which adapted content based on their progress and preferences This alignment highlights the ongoing relevance of personalized digital tools in optimizing language learning experiences and supports the idea that personalization has a positive, motivating effect on learners
The findings from Onluyen.vn also connect closely to constructivist learning theories developed by Vygotsky (1978) and Piaget (1973), which emphasize knowledge construction through active engagement in meaningful tasks Constructivist theories suggest that learners benefit most when they actively participate in their education, make choices, and interact with materials tailored to their proficiency levels Platforms like Onluyen.vn, by providing interactive and personalized learning pathways, embody these principles by allowing students to engage with content that matches their current skill levels This helps maintain a high level of motivation, as students can progress at their own pace and are not overwhelmed by excessively difficult material Research shows that personalized learning platforms enhance engagement by ensuring learners interact with relevant, appropriately challenging tasks Thus, this study's results align with constructivist theory by demonstrating that
Onluyen.vn facilitates active and meaningful learning experiences, thereby contributing to learners’ language acquisition
Learner motivation, a core focus of Self-Determination Theory (SDT), is reflected in the findings of this study, which show enhanced motivation and autonomy among users of Onluyen.vn SDT, proposed by Deci & Ryan (1985, 2000), emphasizes that individuals are more motivated to learn when their needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness are met This theory has been applied widely in personalized learning research, as adaptive platforms can fulfill these needs by providing pathways for autonomous learning and fostering a sense of competence as learners achieve goals
In the context of Onluyen.vn, the platform’s design — offering tailored recommendations and encouraging self-paced learning — has enabled users to develop intrinsic motivation, aligning with SDT’s principles Users noted increased self-motivation and a feeling of control over their learning, attributing this autonomy to Onluyen.vn’s adaptive and user-centered interface This positive correlation between SDT and personalized digital platforms reaffirms the importance of intrinsic motivation in effective language learning, as supported by previous studies
This chapter has presented the analysis and findings from the study on the effectiveness of Onluyen.vn in personalized English language learning The results show that most learners experienced improvements in their English proficiency and appreciated the platform’s adaptive learning features However, some challenges were noted, such as technical difficulties and issues with navigation
Overall, the data indicates that Onluyen.vn effectively supports personalized learning, though areas like user interface and content adaptation need refinement Learners provided constructive feedback, recommending more interactive features and improvements to the platform’s usability.

Limitations and Suggestions for Further Development
While the work has yielded promising results and valuable insights, it is important to acknowledge the inherent limitations of the research These limitations, however, can serve as valuable suggestions for future studies in this emerging field of personalized language learning
One key limitation of the current research is the relatively small and potentially unrepresentative sample of learners involved in the evaluation The study may have been conducted with a limited number of participants, which could restrict the generalizability of the findings Furthermore, the demographic makeup of the participant pool may not have fully reflected the diverse population of English language learners, potentially overlooking the unique experiences and perspectives of certain groups Future research would benefit from expanding the sample size and ensuring a more diverse representation of learners to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the platform’s effectiveness and its ability to cater to the needs of various learner profiles
Another limitation is the short-term nature of the evaluation, which focused primarily on immediate learner outcomes and experiences While these findings provide valuable insights into the platform’s initial impact, they do not offer insights into the long-term sustainability and lasting benefits of the personalized learning approach Conducting longitudinal studies that track learner progress, skill retention, and continued engagement over an extended period could shed light on the enduring effects of personalized learning and offer a more holistic assessment of its value The current research also lacks a control group comparison, which could have provided a more robust basis for evaluating the added value of the personalized learning features When incorporating a control group of learners using traditional,
53 non-personalized English language learning methods, future studies could better isolate the specific impact of the adaptive and customizable elements of the Onluyen.vn platform This comparative analysis would enable researchers to more accurately assess the comparative effectiveness of the personalized learning approach
Additionally, the evaluation relied heavily on self-reported data from learners, such as feedback, satisfaction, and perceived progress While these subjective measures offer valuable insights into the user experience, they may be prone to biases and subjective interpretations Complementing the self-reported data with more objective performance measures, such as standardized proficiency assessments, could provide a more comprehensive and reliable evaluation of the platform’s efficacy in developing tangible language skills
Finally, the context-specific nature of the Onluyen.vn study may limit the direct transferability of the findings to other educational systems and language learning environments Exploring the application of personalized learning approaches in diverse cultural and linguistic contexts could yield valuable insights into the broader implications and adaptability of such methods Comparative studies across different educational settings could shed light on the universal principles and context-specific considerations in designing and implementing effective personalized language learning platforms
Future research should address these limitations by expanding the sample size, incorporating more qualitative data, and conducting longer-term studies to better understand the platform’s impact on language learning outcomes Additionally, comparative studies with other platforms could offer a more comprehensive evaluation of Onluyen.vn’s position in the broader landscape of online language learning tools
In general, this study contributes to the growing body of research on the use of personalized learning platforms in English language education by providing specific insights into the effectiveness and challenges of Onluyen.vn While much research
54 has been conducted on global platforms like Duolingo and Moodle, there is limited data available on platforms tailored specifically to Vietnamese learners This work emphasizes Onluyen.vn's potential to meet the specific needs of Vietnamese learners in their language acquisition journey In relation to the broader context of personalized learning research, this study’s findings confirm the general effectiveness of personalized learning platforms while highlighting specific areas that require improvement, particularly in emerging markets like Vietnam
In conclusion, Onluyen.vn has proven to be a potential tool for personalized English language learning, contributing positively to learners’ skill development, motivation, and autonomy Nevertheless, the challenges identified in this study are consistent with issues reported in previous research on personalized learning platforms, emphasizing the need for continuous improvement The significance of this study lies in its focus on the Vietnamese context, providing a localized perspective on the use of personalized learning technologies and offering practical recommendations for enhancing the effectiveness of such platforms in the future
