Project Gutenberg Etexts are usuallycreated from multiple editions, all ofwhich are in the Public Domain in theUnited States, unless a copyright notice isincluded Therefore, we usually do NOTkeep any of these books in compliancewith any particular paper edition.

We are now trying to release all our

books one month in advance of the officialrelease dates, leaving time for betterediting

Please note: neither this list nor its

contents are final till midnight of the lastday of the month of any such

announcement The official release date ofall Project Gutenberg Etexts is at

Trang 6

Midnight, Central Time, of the last day ofthe stated month A preliminary versionmay often be posted for suggestion,

comment and editing by those who wish to

do so To be sure you have an up to datefirst edition [xxxxx10x.xxx] please checkfile sizes in the first week of the nextmonth Since our ftp program has a bug in

it that scrambles the date [tried to fix andfailed] a look at the file size will have to

do, but we will try to see a new copy has

at least one byte more or less

Information about Project Gutenberg (onepage)

We produce about two million dollars foreach hour we work The time it takes us, a

Trang 7

rather conservative estimate, is fifty hours

to get any etext selected, entered,

proofread, edited, copyright searched andanalyzed, the copyright letters written, etc. This projected audience is one hundredmillion readers If our value per text isnominally estimated at one dollar then weproduce $2 million dollars per hour thisyear as we release thirty-six text files permonth, or 432 more Etexts in 1999 for atotal of 2000+ If these reach just 10% ofthe computerized population, then the totalshould reach over 200 billion Etexts givenaway this year

The Goal of Project Gutenberg is to GiveAway One Trillion Etext Files by

December 31, 2001 [10,000 x

100,000,000 = 1 Trillion] This is ten

Trang 8

thousand titles each to one hundred

million readers, which is only ~5% of thepresent number of computer users

At our revised rates of production, wewill reach only one-third of that goal bythe end of 2001, or about 3,333 Etextsunless we manage to get some real

funding; currently our funding is mostlyfrom Michael Hart's salary at Carnegie-Mellon University, and an assortment ofsporadic gifts; this salary is only good for

a few more years, so we are looking forsomething to replace it, as we don't wantProject Gutenberg to be so dependent onone person

We need your donations more than ever!

All donations should be made to "ProjectGutenberg/CMU": and are tax deductible

to the extent allowable by law (CMU =Carnegie- Mellon University)
