THE NEED FOR SPEED
A I have a very busy working life so
holidays are time for me to have a
break But I would never dream of
just lying on a beach all day I have
to do something very active and
exciting I want to have fun in a
very different, extreme way So, I go
skiing — both on water and in snow
I sometimes go skiing in France but
since I was a child I have been skiing
a lot in St Moritz, Switzerland It’s
a really nice, friendly resort A lot
of French places are for extreme skiing and so for people like my
mum, who doesn’t ski that much, there is not a lot to do We also go to Austria This year, after two concerts
in Vienna, I just took my ski boots
and headed for the slopes I love the feeling of speed
B This summer I went climbing in
Argentina It was probably the most
exhilarating and thrilling holiday I have ever had I definitely want to
go back in future Of course, as a
violinist, I have to be careful with
my hands but I have been skiing
since I was five or six years old
So, although I like extreme sports,
I don’t take any extreme risks But
the whole of life is a risk You can
walk out the door and get run over
by a car Life is so short you need to enjoy it while you can

favourite author is Gabriel Garcia
Marquez He can describe the most boring and mundane things
in really fascinating and interesting ways I also take a few CDs with me
The thing about music is that you
can’t say, ‘I’m not going to listen
to any music’, Music is part of my
personal and professional life so
I like having music around me all the time — even on holiday I take
a lot of different types with me
am returning immediately to do a
concert, I will take a piece of music
along to study And of course I take
my violin I have to make sure it is not too humid because that kind
of heat can damage and crack the
wood Every six months it has to
go to a violin doctor for a check-
up Sometimes I manage to practise for an hour, sometimes longer This
summer holiday was very relaxing
In fact, it was absolutely wonderful
I didn’t touch my violin for three
whole weeks! IM

she moved away, first to university and then to Birmingham to take
up a nursing post If I had one wish it would be for us to live closer together We're on the phone to each other most evenings Sadly
though, we don’t get together as often as we would like But on the
rare occasions we actually do meet up we're like kids all over again,
laughing and giggling We go to the cinema or out for a meal and talk about old times and how things used to be
I wasn’t very academic at school, but Susana has always encouraged
me I remember sitting in our front room doing our homework
together — she helped me with the difficult maths problems Most
of my other memories of school are of us climbing trees and chasing each other in the park

Susana is a very kind and caring person She even lent me her wedding

before me I was single for ages and spent a lot of time with Susana
and Ryan when they were girlfriend and boyfriend before I finally
met my husband David I think Susana was so lucky to meet Ryan
when she was seventeen They went on to get married two years
later!
Everything that has happened in our lives we’ve shared and gone
through together My darkest hour was when my son, Josh, was very
ill Susana was wonderful; she dropped everything to be with me She
cooked, cleaned and made the three-and-a-half-hour journey to the
hospital to see me at least three times a week We are doting ‘aunties’
co each other’s kids J love it when Susana’s daughter calls me ‘Auntie
Jessica’ when she chats to me on the phone I know that Susana feels

Being such close friends means we can
sometimes We’ve never had a really serious argument or
badly, though If we disagree about something, which hardly ever
happens, we talk round it It hasn’t been much of a problem to make
