CHAPTER I ATTAINMENT OF MIND

CONTROL

The men of the nineteenth centuryhave harnessed the forces of the outerworld The age is now at hand thatshall harness the energies of mind,new-found in the psychologicallaboratory, and shall put them at theservice of humanity

Trang 17

Take careful note for a week of theincidents of your daily life—your methods

of work, habits of thought, modes ofrecreation You will discover anappalling waste in your present randommethods of operation

How many foot-pounds of energy do yousuppose you annually dump into the scrap-heap of wasted effort? What does this

Trang 18

Individual mental efficiency is an absoluteprerequisite to any notable personalachievement or any great individualsuccess Your mental energies are theforces with which you must wage yourbattles in this world.

Are you prepared to direct anddeploy these forces with masterfulcontrol and strategic skill? Are youprepared to use all your reserves ofmental energy in the crises of yourcareer?

Individual mental efficiency is an absoluteprerequisite to any notable personal

Trang 19

achievement or any great individualsuccess Your mental energies are theforces with which you must wage yourbattles in this world Are you prepared todirect and deploy these forces withmasterful control and strategic skill? Areyou prepared to use all your reserves ofmental energy in the crises of your career?

A Mighty and Intelligent Power resideswithin you Its marvelous resources arejust now coming to be recognized

Recent scientific research has revealed, beyond the world of the senses andbeyond the domain of consciousness, awide and hitherto hidden realm of humanenergies and resources

These are mental energies and

Trang 20

Thus in many fairly independent ways weare brought around to this same idea of acommon structure underlying all the manyseeming diversities manifested by what

we call matter

In this Basic Course of Reading we shall

lay before you in simple and clear-cut butscientific form the proof that you have atyour command mental powers of whichyou have never before dreamed

Trang 21

ambition, you need but follow our plain

and simple instructions in order to do the thing you want to do, to be the man you want to be, or to get the thing you want to have.

If you have any thought that thecontrol of your hidden mentalenergies is to be acquired by merehygienic measures, put it from you.The idea that you may come into thefulness of your powers through merewholesome living, outdoor sports andbodily exercise is an idea that belongs to

an age that is past Good health is not

Trang 22

Nor does success necessarily follow

or require long preparation in aparticular field The first occupation

of the successful man is rarely theone in which he achieves his ultimatetriumph In the changing conditions of ourday, one needs a better weapon than themere knowledge of a particular trade,

vocation or profession He needs that

Trang 23

It is well to tell you beforehand that

in this Basic Course of Reading we

shall be content with no merecataloguing of the factors that arecommonly regarded as essential tosuccess We shall do no moralizing Youwill find here no elaboration of theancient aphorisms, "Honesty is the bestpolicy," and "Genius is the infinitecapacity for taking pains."

The world has had its fill of mereexhortations to industry, frugality andperseverance For some thousands ofyears men have preached to the lazy man,

"Be industrious," and to the timid man,

Trang 24

It is easy enough to tell the salesmanthat he must approach his "prospect"with tact and confidence But tact andconfidence are not qualities that can

be assumed and discarded like aSunday coat Industry and courage and tactand confidence are well enough, but wemust know the Why and the How of thesethings

It is well enough to preach that the secret

of achievement is to be found in faith" and "courage-confidence," and thatthe way to acquire these qualities is toassume that you have them There is no

Trang 25

"faith"? And "faith" in What? And Why?And How?

Obviously we cannot achieve certain anddefinite results in this or any other field solong as we continue to deal with materials

we do not understand

Yet that is what all men are doingtoday The elements of truth arebefogged in vague and amateurishmysticism, and the subject ofindividual efficiency when we get beyondmere preaching and moralizing is a chaos

of isms

Trang 26

Men and women must be fundamentallytrained so that they can look deep intotheir own minds and see where the screw

is loose, where oil is needed, and soreadjust themselves and their living for agreater efficiency

The embittered, the superstitious, theprejudiced, all those who scorpion-like sting themselves with the virus

of failure, must be given an antidote

of understanding that will repair theirderanged mental machinery

Trang 27

The profligate must be lured from hisemotional excesses and debaucheries, not

by moralizings, but by showing him justhow these things fritter his energies andretard his progress

It must be made plain to thesuccessful promoter, to the richbanker, how a man may be afinancial success and yet a miserablefailure so far as true happiness isconcerned, and how by scientific self-development he can acquire greater richeswithin than all his vaults of steel will

Trang 28

Undiscovered

Resources

hold

This Basic Course of Reading offers just

such an analysis and exposition offundamental principles It furnishesdefinite and scientific answers to theproblems of life It will reveal to youunused or unintelligently used mentalforces vastly greater than those now atyour command

We go even further, and say that this

Basic Course of Reading provides a

practicable formula for the everydayuse of these vast resources It will enableyou to acquire the magical qualities andstill more magical effects that spellsuccess and happiness, without strainingyour will to the breaking point and makinglife a burden It will give you a definite

Trang 29

prescription like the physician's, "Takeone before meals," and as easilycompounded, which will enable you to beprosperous and happy

In the development of one's innateresources, such as powers of observation, imagination, correct judgment, alertness, resourcefulness, application, concentration, and the faculty of takingprompt advantage of opportunities, thestudy of the mental machine is bound to bethe first step It must be the ultimateresource for self-training in efficiency forthe promoter with his appeal to thecupidity and imaginations of men as surely

as for the artist in his search for poeticinspiration

No man can get the best results from

Trang 30

The mastery of your own powers is worthmore to you than all the knowledge ofoutside facts you can crowd into yourhead Read and study and practice the

teachings of this Basic Course, and they

will make you in a new sense the master

of yourself and of your future

In this Basic Course of Reading we shall

begin by giving you a thoroughunderstanding of certain mental operationsand processes

We shall lead your interest awayfrom "vague mysticisms" and

Trang 31

We shall give you a practical workingknowledge of concentrative mentalmethods and devices We shall clear awaythe mysteries and misapprehensions thatnow envelop this particular field.

In the present volume we shall begin with

a discussion of certain aspects of therelation between the mind and the body

However we look at it, it isimpossible to understand the mindwithout some knowledge of thebodily machine through which themind works The investigation of the mindand its conditions and problems is

Trang 32

or less And this is particularly true ofpsychology, which deals with the mind, and physiology, which deals with thebody.

It is the mind that we are primarilyinterested in But every individual mindresides within, or at least expresses itselfthrough, a body Upon the preservation ofthat body and upon the orderlyperformance of its functions depend ourhealth and comfort, our very lives

Then, too, considered merely as part

Trang 33

is in fact his only source of informationabout the outside world.

First of all, then, you must form definiteand intelligent conclusions concerning therelations between the mind and the body

This will be of value in a number ofways In the first place, you willunderstand the bodily mechanismthrough which the mind operates, and

a knowledge of this mechanism isbound to enlighten you as to the character

of the mental processes themselves In the

Trang 34

second place, it is worth while to knowthe extent of the mind's influence over thebody, because this knowledge is the firststep toward obtaining bodily efficiencythrough the mental control of bodilyfunctions And, finally, a study of thisbodily mechanism is of very greatpractical importance in itself, for the body

is the instrument through which the mindacts in its relations with the world atlarge

From a study of the bodily machine, weshall advance to a consideration of themental processes themselves, not after theusual manner of works on psychology, butsolely from the standpoint of practicalutility and for the establishment of ascientific concept of the mind capable of

Trang 35

of labor, the business executive.

In this way this Basic Course of

Reading will lay a firm and broad

foundation, first, for an understanding

of the methods and devices whereby anyman may acquire full control and direction

of his mental energies and may develop

Trang 36

his resources to the last degree; second, for an understanding of the psychologicalmethods for success in any specificprofessional pursuit in which he may beparticularly interested; and third, for anunderstanding of the methods of applyingpsychological knowledge to the industrialproblems of office, store and factory. The first of these—that is to say, instruction in methods for the attainment ofany goal consistent with native ability—will follow right along as part of this

Basic Course of Reading The second and

third—that is to say, the study of specialcommercial and industrial topics—aremade the subject of special courses

supplemental to this Basic Course and for

which it can serve only as an introduction

Trang 37

we call "natural." And yet the facts of

radioactivity very positively forbid the past eternity of matter Hence, the

conclusion is syllogistic: matter must haveoriginated at some time in the past bymethods or means which are equivalent to

a real Creation

In this Basic Course of Reading we

shall show you how you may acquireperfect individual efficiency And,most remarkable of all, we shallshow you how you may acquire it

without that effort to obtain it, that

Trang 38

The facts and principles set forth in this

Basic Course are new and wonderful and

inspiring They have been established andattested by world-wide and exhaustivescientific research and experiment

You may be a college graduate Youmay have had the advantage of acollege course in psychology Butyou have probably had no instruction

in the practical application of yourknowledge of mental operations Sofar as we are aware, there are fewuniversities in the world that embrace in

Trang 39

their curricula a course in "applied"psychology For the average college man

thi s Basic Course of Reading will be,

therefore, in the nature of a post-graduatecourse, teaching him how to makepractical use of the psychology he learned

at college, and in addition giving him factsabout the mind unknown to the collegepsychology of a few years ago

In these books you will probe deeply intothe normal human mind

You will see also the fantastic anddistorted shape of its manifestations indisease

You will learn the Eternal Laws ofIndividual Achievement

Trang 40

And you will be taught how to apply them

to your own business or profession. But mark this word of warning Tocomprehend the teachings of this

Basic Course well enough to put them into

practice demands from you careful studyand reflection It requires persistentapplication Do not attempt to browsethrough the pages that follow They areworth all the time that you can put uponthem

The mind is a complex mechanism Eachelement is alone a fitting subject for alifetime's study Do not lose sight of thewhole in the study of the parts

All the books bear upon a central theme. They will lead you on step by step
