From the mouths of the babes…

You probably know the expression “From the mouths of the babes…”. A sentence we sometimes hear in joyful and uplifting moments, maybe in company with children. But is there some truth to it

as well? My mom enjoys to tell everyone in my family about this one time when I was very young, about 34 years old, when I was visiting my great grandmother. I asked my great grandmother if she had been run over by a truck… because I noticed some “wheel tracks”, as I called it, on her forehead. Yes, I know… shame on me!

I recently came to think about the expression, when I was driving into the center of the city. Going into the city, I usually park my car in a parking area with free parking. The total distance from this parking area to the boutiques are of a little 5 min.’s walk, and there are several different routes to choose from. One day it came to my attention that I usually tend to choose the same specific route from the parking area to the boutiques. It’s not the shortest way, nor the prettiest and most green route. Or the way that leads directly to the shoestores. No, it is the route that passes a

kindergarten. A kindergarten that has both its entrance and playground located right next to the pathway.

Whenever passing this Kindergarten there is always something or someone catching my attention. Something that “moves me”. A little boy with a Spidermanknapsack holding his daddies hand on his way up the stairs to the frontdoor, while singing or chatting. A little cutie waving at her mom, pressing her nose completely flat up at the window in the attempt to see the very last image of her mother turning at the corner on her bicycle on her way to work. 3, 4 or 5 other children playing, running, chasing, building in the sandpit in the playground

Now, that’s life! Emotions and states are all there. The joy, the laughter, the tears, the longing, the fights, the dreams and the hopes… I can hear it and I can feel it. This imidiate impulses… in this age. Almost no filters of “what will other people think of me, if I do what I really want to?”; no holding themselves back like “If I show them who I really am, nobody will like me”. No, here you see the kids as the humans they are. At eyelevel, human to human.

This is why I always tend to choose this exact route passing this Kindergarten on my way the boutiques. Here the little people DO what they ARE and ARE what they DO. I find the “doing” and

“being” highly integrated here… more so than in the lives many adults choose to live.

Is that delightful or what? Maybe you haven’t thought much about it, so go ahead and do! It is rewarding and liberating. Can an authentic life be lived by you more easily by using some of the strategies you used as a child?

Imagine that you have an invisible child at your side for a whole week. What would that child

experience? … say? think? feel? What kind of raw and unfiltered truths would you be served by the mouths of a child following you for an entire week? Room for improvement? I’m just asking.

Is it as good as it gets, or could it be better?
