A Look around you when you're outside - for example, on a city street or in a park You'll probably see people taking selfies (photos of themselves) with their cell phones to share with their friends Taking selfies actually has a long history A photographer from the United States called Robert Cornelius took the first self-photograph in 1839

In the twentieth century, people used different methods to take selfies, such as photographing themselves in a mirror The name "selfie" is relatively new, however The first time somebody used this name was probably around the year 2000

B Taking selfies is usually just a fun activity, but sometimes it can be a problem A growing number of people are taking selfies with animals and posting them online

On sites like Instagram, the number of selfies with animals has increased around 300 percent in recent years People take and post selfies with tigers, snakes, bears, monkeys, and even with sea creatures such as turtles or dolphins This might sound cute or fun, but it's not always good for the animals or the photographer

C One problem, for instance, is that people might touch and injure an animal when they take their selfie Or the animal may get nervous and attack Also, some tourists will pay for a selfie with a wild animal People catch wild animals for this business, and they don't always care for the animals well They might hurt them, for example, or not give them enough food or water

D How can we end this problem? Firstly, we should just stop this practice And we shouldn't say yes if somebody offers to help us take a selfie with a wild animal Instead, we should say it's a bad idea If we know that wild animals are being mistreated, we should tell the police
