The American Medical Association wants the entertainment industry (25) more descriptive ratings on all kinds of entertainment-from movies to music recording Overhauling the entire rating system was strongly suggested by the AMA at their annual meeting last week
The powerful, 300,000- member AMA will now try to convince the industry to adopt its recommendations This may not be easy to do since industry spokespeople cry censorship at (26)
to curb violence on big and small screens However, censoring programs is not the AMA’s intention, states Robert MacAfee, the AMA’s new president McAfee says physicians simply want to help parents perform their jobs more effectively Since (27) programming comes into everyone’s home, and any four- or five-year-old can witness it, “…we have every right as physicians to begin to do prevention,” claimed McAfee
The AMA bases its recommendations on studies (28) show that children seem to learn aggressive habits early in life As adults, they resist changing these habits The harmful consequences may last a lifetime In its reply to the AMA recommendations, NBC did not offer to alter its practices
A spokesperson said that the network had long ago started to regulate its own shows (29) _, NBC has already advised parents not to turn on certain programs during family viewing times because they are unsuitable for children The other networks apparently decided not to respond to requests for comment

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from 31 to 35
The food we eat seems to have profound effects on our health Although science has made enormous steps in making food more fit to eat, it has, at the same time, made many foods unfit to eat Some research has shown that perhaps eighty percent of all human illnesses are related to diet and forty percent of cancer is related to the diet as well, especially cancer of the colon People of different cultures are more
prone to contract certain illnesses because of the characteristic foods they consume
That food is related to illness is not a new discovery In 1945, government researchers realized that nitrates and nitrites (commonly used to preserve color in meat) as well as other food additives caused
cancer Yet, these carcinogenic additives remain in our food, and it becomes more difficult all the time
to know which ingredients on the packaging labels of processed food are helpful or harmful
The additives that we eat are not all so direct Farmers often give penicillin to cattle and poultry, and because of this, penicillin has been found in the milk of treated cows
Sometimes similar drugs are administered to animals not for medicinal purposes, but for financial reasons The farmers are simply trying to fatten the animals in order to obtain a higher price on the market Although the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has tried repeatedly to control these procedures, the practices continue
A healthy diet is directly related to good health Often we are unaware of detrimental substances we ingest Sometimes well-meaning farmers or others who do not realize the consequences add these substances to food without our knowledge

Living abroad does not only require learning a new language, but also adapting to a foreign culture Each culture have its customs and traditions which can be very different- even shocking- from your own
Trang 54
culture In a country like Germany, you will see people knocking on their table rather than clapping to applaud at the end of a master class or a really good meeting In Beer-land clapping is reserved for theater and concerts Talking about beer, if you want to respect German customs, don’t forget to clink glasses and say Prost very single time you start a new beverage And make eye contact to your fellow toasters, otherwise it is said that you will suffer bad sex relations for the next 7 years Germans are quite organized people but there are times when the reality really doesn’t match the expectation
Spaniards, in other hand, are well-known for being loud and friendly If you happen to visit Spain, don’t be surprised if a girl kisses you twice - once on one cheek and once on the other cheek- to introduce herself It’s the Spanish way of saying “Hello!” French people tend to enjoy a cheese tasting plate
accompanied by a good red wine after meals, so when you stay with them, make sure to spare some
space in your stomach for the dessert, and remember: if you are drinking a red wine and want to change
to white wine, please don’t pour it in the same glass without cleaning it beforehand, if you don’t want to
be the laughingstock of the party Italians are very superstitious and for them, nuns and ambulances are associated with death So if you plan to spend your holidays in Italy and you bump into one of them, don’t hesitate and bless yourself with the sign of the Cross… Just in case!
In some Asian countries such as China, Korea or Japan, a sign of approval and appreciation of
someone’s cooking is to slurp the soup loudly - what is considered rude in most western countries
However, in Japan, don’t blow your nose loudly! It is considered very rude So if you need to clean your nose while you are in the Land of the Rising Sun, do it in privately or turn your back to your companions before doing it And remember, do it quietly if you want to avoid offending anyone If you are looking for a job in Ireland, the UK or the US, remember not to add personal data in you CV (date of birth, sex, marital status or even a profile picture) Equal opportunity legislation in these countries requires employers to recruit based on merit alone, and emitting these data enables organisations to choose candidates fairly These are some amazing cultural facts driven by external factors such as religion, idiosyncrasy or even geography, which determine the way people behave Because…to sum up: we are all human beings, but our lifestyles are exceptionally diverse

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions
In today's competitive world, what responsible parent would not want to give their children the best possible start in life? For this reason, many parents want their children, often as young as ten months old, to become familiar with computers They seem to think that if their children grow up with computers, they will be better equipped to face the challenges of the future
No one has proved that computers make children more creative or more intelligent The truth may even be the opposite Educational psychologists claim that too much exposure to computers, especially for the very young, may negatively affect normal brain development Children gain valuable experience of the world from their interaction with physical objects Ten-month-old babies may benefit more from bumping their heads or putting various objects in their mouths than
they will from staring at eye-catching cartoons A four-year-old child can improve hand-eye
coordination and understand cause and effect better by experimenting with a crayon than by moving a cursor around a computer screen So, as educational psychologists suggest, instead of government funding going to more and more computer classes, it might be better to devote resources to music and art programs
It is ludicrous to think that children will fall behind if they are not exposed to computers from
an early age Time is too precious to spend with a "mouse" Now is the time when they should be out there learning to ride a bike There will be time later on for them to start banging away at keyboards

D Computers seriously harm children's eyesight

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the following questions
The World Health Organization on Wednesday declared the rapidly spreading coronavirus
outbreak a pandemic Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that “We expect to
see the number of cases, the number of deaths, and the number of affected countries climbs even higher.”
WHO officials had said earlier they were hesitant to call the outbreak a pandemic in case it led governments and individuals to give up the fight On Wednesday, they stressed that fundamental public health interventions can still limit the spread of the virus and drive down
cases even where it was transmitting widely, as the work of authorities and communities in
China, Singapore, and South Korea has shown
The virus, which probably originated in bats but passed to people via an as yet unrecognized intermediary animal species, is believed to have started infecting people in Wuhan, China, in late November or early December Since then the virus has raced around the
globe South Korea, which has reported nearly 8,000 cases, also appears poised to bring its
outbreak under control with aggressive measures and widespread testing But other countries have struggled to follow the leads of China and South Korea — a reality that has frustrated WHO officials who have exhorted the world to do everything possible to end transmission of the virus Tedros used the fact that 90% of the cumulative cases have been reported in just four countries as evidence that the rest of the world still had time to prevent an explosion of cases with action
WHO officials also stressed that countries should be implementing a strategic combination two types of measures One involves trying to detect and stop known chain of transmission by isolating cases and following and potetially their contacts The other involves community-level steps like social distancing and comes into play when the virus is spreading more broadly and transmission chains can’t be tracked Mike Ryan, the head of the WHO’s emergency program, said that the public health interventions might not have straightforward effect but to slow the spread of the virus People with severe cases can require long periods of critical care and strain the resources of hospitals He said he was worried about “the case load, the demand on the health
