CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION

Time management plays a vital role in improving a student's academicperformance Every student should have time management ability which includessetting goals and priorities and using time management mechanisms The basicproblems or constraints related to time management are similar, spending hours onsocial networking sites, having no proper schedule, organization, guidance, targets, missions, objectives, or vision, and social engagement

College students may become overwhelmed with feelings that there is notenough time to complete all their work adequately It is even more crucial formedical students who have one of the most time-consuming majors This will serve

as a guide for students to effectively manage their time and study at full capacity.Time management is a group of practices, skills, tools, and systems that worktogether to help improve the quality of life Worldwide, students that practiced bothplanning and positive time attitudes found that they had much more time tocomplete their tasks because they control their time spent It was also found thatstudents who reported using goal-oriented time management had a higher overallGPA

This study aimed to determine the relationship between the timemanagement skills and academic performance of students, assess timemanagement and practice among students, and determine patterns of timemanagement among EMQI students In addition, to determine whether studentparticipation in extracurricular activities and social media correlates to his or hercumulative grade point average

CHAPTER 2: LITERATURE REVIEW 2.1 Definition of time management

There is a titanic difference between secondary and higher education when itcomes to managing time and academic responsibilities In secondary education, there was the kind of learning that includes an explanation of everything On theother hand, when students enter university, they find out that what they learn is alecture that only includes superficial information and the rest is their job to knowabout and explore further (Britton & Tesser, 2001) Time management is a skill thatevery student should not only know but also apply A lot of university studentscomplain about running out of time when asked to do a certain task, they getfrustrated because they are not able to make it before the deadline Timemanagement is extremely important, especially when it comes to universitystudents because it will boost their grades and enhance their productivity (Laurie &Hellsten, 2002) However, most of the time students face problems like taskaversion and uncertainty, so they start to procrastinate because they lackorganizational skills As a result, students will not be able to organize dutiesaccording to their priorities, so they get distracted easily, ending up procrastinating

As we can see, time management is quite essential to any university student, and it

is one of the keys to higher academic achievements (Kelly, 2004)

In the relevant literature, there are a great number of academic studiesfocusing on the relationship between time management and academicachievements The related literature showed the time management attitude and skilllevels of university students and the effects of these skills on their academicachievement The research revealed that a majority of student possesses moderate-level time management skills and only a significantly small portion has high-leveltime management skills (Yilmaz, Yoncalik & Bektaş, 2006) The literature revealedthat the students’ time management skills affect their academic achievement at asignificant level and the skills are one of the predictors of academic performance. The relevant literature suggested that students should start to acquire timemanagement senses on their own in their primary school years by reading materials

on the issue or via the framework of psychological counseling and guidancestudies applied in schools and adopt effective time management attitudes and

techniques to determine how and where they spend their time (Lisa & Robert,2008) The various groups of students who exploited time-saving proficienciesnotably had rich academic achievements They accomplished those students who

do not use time-saving techniques in their educational environment havesignificantly lower academics as compared to results students who employ time-management tactics have considerably higher achievement (Mercanlioglu, 2010)

To calculate the cumulative time spent working during a week, these objectswere also added Time management practices have been proven to be some of thetop indicators of achieving a high level of academic success and performance. They not only influence the achievement but using time management techniquesalso serve only one reason meaning that there are multipurpose fulfilled by timemanagement (Fazal, 2012) Taking part in proceedings and being engaged in otheroutside class activities, not inevitably a job, but being energetic in an institutionalso has a strong correlation to reaching high academic achievements Variousstudies showed that time management practices serve many purposes not only forchallenging the performance of the students Time management practices show theway not only to a high level of academic performance but to good physicalcondition and lower levels of stress The foremost purpose of the present study waseducational competency, using time managing techniques, test pressure, and testproficiency (Faisal, Miqdadi, Abdulla & Mohammad, 2014) Academiccompetence scores were established to some extent improved in the current sampleindicating that students found course material/content encouraging and enjoyingtheir classes

2.2 Dimensions of Time Management

The effective utilization of time and managing time requires procedures andgood quality planning behaviors One can make use of time effectively andcompetently by keeping time logs, setting immediate and long-standing goals, prioritizing responsibilities, constructing to-do lists and arrangements, andorganizing one’s workspace, as studies of earlier periods and plentiful how-tobooks proposed (Sabelis, 2001) Time-saving techniques and behaviors can becategorized into numerous groups and be liable to contribute to severalfundamental qualities in general There are three surfaces of time managementbehaviors: short-range planning, long-range planning, and time attitudes (Laurie &Hellsten, 2002) Short-range planning is the capability to set out and systematizeresponsibilities in a short period Long-range planning competence is to handle

Trang 10

everyday jobs over a longer time perspective by keeping track of significant datesand setting objectives by putting adjournments (Alay & Koçak, 2003)

A.Long Range Planning

Long-range planning means having long-range objectives and disciplinedroutines Various researchers named it as having the perception of a preference fororganization and it is comparable to long-range planning To acquire a summary ofthe everyday jobs that necessitate being executed, time limits, and priorities whichincreases the perception of having control over time so, in the long run, planningenables one to deal with all activities (Kelly, 2004) It directs to have lessperception of control over time because it may be tackled to be familiar with howmuch effort requires to be completed within hours, days, or weeks; it may even bethe immediate measurable effect of planning This gives the impression to indicatethat time management practices accomplish to influence educational achievement, but that’s not all they affect (Brigitte et al., 2005) It was also found that thestudents had advanced overall academic achievements and accounted for goal-oriented time management practices

B.Short Range Planning

Short-range planning was defined as time management activities surrounded bydaily or weekly time structure and covering the activities such as setting objectives

at the commencement of the day, planning and prioritizing daily behaviors, andcreating work content (Yilmaz et al., 2006) Numerous studies invented that short-range planning behavior, forecasting of time in the short run, surrounded by thetime enclosed by a week or less, established a constructive relationship to gradepoint average Short-range planning in interface with accomplishment determinedwas optimistically associated with dealing performance as well (Noftle et al.,2007) Likewise, most of the studies that control for the student time do so bydetermining the total time committed to the course, a variable normally found to beunimportant Academic achievement means the educational objective that isaccomplished by a student, teacher, or institution realized over a definite shortperiod (Lisa & Robert, 2008) In a different research finding it has beendemonstrated that there exists a positive significant relation between students’grade point averages and the time attitudes and the short-range planning

C.Time Attitude

Trang 11

Time management demands a key shift in emphasis: concentrate on results, not

on being busy There are a lot of cases with people who waste their lives indiscolored doings and attain very small since they are placing their labors into theincorrect responsibilities or weakening to focus their activity successfully, established that two time management workings directly affect the collectiveacademic achievements (Mercanlioglu, 2010) The perception of how their timerequires to be used up or planning including utilizing short and long period goalsand time attitudes or students accomplished that both planning and encouragingtime attitudes initiated that they had much more time to finish their everyday jobsbecause they experience more in control of how their time hat time managementpractices that connected to the individual's awareness and attitudes about timemanagement and is comparable the perception of having control over time. Therefore, time attitudes comprise the perception that the individual is in control oftime, the perception that the person is efficiently managing his time, and theperception that the individual is making constructive utilization of time (Karim etal., 2015)

2.3 The importance of time management

Time is critical for providing human beings with opportunities to thinkabout their status, conditions, and environment and to make, change, create, andmaintain various systems Time can be strong, transparent, and practical, comprising rules that govern our daily lives and help members of society achievesuccess Since properly implementing rules and regulations is critical for bothindividuals and nations, times are considered a great cure for all types of problems. With time, people can overcome all hurdles, issues, and difficulties, sometimeseven turning sorrows into happiness (and vice versa) Good intentions, timemanagement, passion, and hard work are all fundamental for achieving positiveresults All stakeholders must make decisions by allocating time to every activity. These decisions can determine a leader’s popularity and effectiveness (Grissom,Loeb & Master, 2013; Horng, Klasik & Loeb, 2010), which leads the institutionand employees toward quality education Human history shows that people whoadopt the above fundamental rules and successfully manage their time are moresuccessful

Time and TM are particularly important in the field of education TMSs are especially critical for teachers, since, like all professionals, teachers need toperform well to improve their performance Teachers work as architects, building

Trang 12

children's futures and, thus, the future of the world Similarly, principals mustinvest their time in different curricular activities, such as developing andtransmitting instructions and coaching and supporting teachers’ professionaldevelopment, all of which are directly associated with positive student outcomes(Grissom, Loeb, & Master, 2013; May, Huff, & Goldring, 2012), teachersatisfaction, motivation, and quality education

Time is an important component of quantity to measure the various eventsand their timing to compare the duration of the intervals to quantify the rates ofchange of quantities in reality and the conscious experience (Internet Encyclopedia

of Philosophy, 2010; The New Oxford Dictionary of English, 2001) Timeremained an important subject of study in most fields of study such as religion, philosophy, science, business, industry, sports, and the performing arts, and they allincorporated some notion of time into

2.4 Benefits of time management

2.4.1 Energy savings

When you know how to organize your time, you will definitely do morethings

then you think Instead of just seeing what works, and where to do it, the planning

of work must be completed within a certain period of time Moreover, If you save

an hour daily, you have 250 hours a year to spend on other work Prioritizing andmatching tasks with available time is a way for you to work without spending toomuch effort Instead of doing without a plan, having no division of what to dobefore and after will make you busy with repairs and work upside down, which ismore time-consuming

2.4.2 Make life more meaningful

Without goals and deadlines for working time You just work hard, evenwhile

playing, work efficiency is low and sometimes you don't have time to really rest orspend time with loved ones, personal interests… The feeling of getting things done

in a shorter time also helps you to be motivated to work, get excited, and haveideas to realize more intentions and plans By being conscious of how you spendyour time, you will have more time to appreciate and enjoy life

2.4.3 Quicker decision

Trang 13

If there is no scientific time, it is very difficult for something unexpected to happens that forces you to decide Because of the unfinished work, the work thathas not been done, how much work is still waiting… This will again cost you moretime Instead, if you have a business decision, look at the list of times you have up

in the day Any free time you can do it and quickly solve it without much hesitation

or hesitation

2.4.4 Improve your life and health

Being able to separate work and personal life will help you have more time

to take care of yourself, do what you like, and increase family affection.Instead of working and playing with your head in a pile of books, organizingthe details of your work will complete faster than expected the importantthings to do and give yourself more time

2.5 Effective time management solution

2.5.1 Determine Your Priorities

In your day-to-day activities, some tasks are more important than others Forexample, a task might have a closer deadline than the rest, or the case might be thatyou need to finish task A before you can effectively complete task B The same can

be said about achieving your long-term goals, whether it is a promotion orinvesting more time in a hobby Determining what your priorities are is the firststep toward effective time management Whether you're an employee or in high-level management, you should have a clear picture of your top priorities After all,how can you set out to accomplish your goals until you identify them clearly? Oneeffective method to prioritize your daily tasks is the Eisenhower Matrix, whichallows you to categorize and separate your most critical tasks from those that youcan delegate or eliminate entirely The method is named after Dwight D.Eisenhower, the 34th president of the United States, who was widely recognizedfor his efficiency and discipline

2.5.2 Avoid Multitasking

While many people praise their ability to multitask, there are just as many

Trang 14

reasons to believe it can actually get in the way of improving your timemanagement skills A 2011 research study from the University of California, forinstance, found that multitasking can negatively affect your working memory andability to focus on important tasks This, of course, isn’t great for timemanagement What’s more important, multitasking may just be overrated Whatmakes it accurate is the fact that, in reality, you never truly multitask The varioustasks you grapple with can be accomplished to some extent, but none will be to thebest of your abilities It is essential to learn how to devote your whole attention tothe task at hand if you want to improve your time management skills Yourproductivity can only improve if you master sustained focus andeffort

2.5.4 Use Time Management Apps

It’s all too easy to get overwhelmed with never-ending daily reminders of scheduled tasks and meetings, and constantly trying to catch up can take a toll onyour workflow Fortunately, technology has come a long way to help us in thatregard By using time management apps, you can easily organize everything in onespace and track your time for different tasks Time Management apps likeRescuetime can significantly boost your efficiency The app allows you to use aFocus Session mode whenever you truly need to focus, preventing maindistractions and tracking how effectively you work Similarly, time-tracking appslike Everhour or Toggl Track can show you how much time you actually spend onany given task
