I Title: A Study on the Choice of K64 NEU Students on using Tablets and Laptops
Besides Notebooks
II Statement of the problems/ Background:
In today’s technology era, many people show a preference for using technology devices for their educational needs, such as laptops and tablets These technology devicesbring optimal convenience and benefit to students in learning There are many students who choose to use laptops and tablets for studying and they prefer this instead of traditional school supplies Some other students think that using school supplies is still the most effective for their learning They believe that technology devices can be distracting in learning and hard to use when you do not have much knowledge about technology Therefore, we decided to carry out research to answer the question about choosing technology devices or traditional school supplies We will conduct our survey within a group of 100 people which includes K64 NEU students to know which option is more popular to them
III Theoretical framework:
Since "the Choice of K64 NEU Students" is the primary focus of this study, we had to carefully evaluate and choose the most pertinent meaning of "Choice" as the foundation for our further investigation We discovered that the best way to define
"Choice" was as "the capacity of a consumer or producer to choose which good, service,
or resource to supply among a variety of available possibilities Being able to make your own decisions is viewed as a critical measure of economic growth and development (Source: www.economicsonline.co.uk/definitions/choice.html/)
In addition, we also tended to refer to the theory of “The Buyer Decision Process
“ which was first introduced by John Dewey in 1910 and expanded by Engel, Blackwell, and Kollat in 1968 Thanks to this reference, we were able to acknowledge as well as
Trang 5did not only point out two sides of the tablet, laptop, and notebook but also gave people a deep insight into why using tablets, and laptops are common among college students besides traditional ones Furthermore, the main benefit of our research is that K64 NEU students can make a wise choice for their learning needs and technology stores observe the upward trend
2 What are some possible reasons for this trend?
3 What are the drawbacks that tablets/laptops bring about? How can users improve that?
VI Hypothesis:
1 Hypothesis 1: The number of Tablet/Laptop users outweighs the number of notebook users
2 Hypothesis 2: Possible reasons
Tablets/Laptops are much more convenient than notebooks (last longer than notebooks, have everything in one place,…)
Students use more Tablets/Laptops as their friends also use them
3 Hypothesis 3: Tablets/Laptops bring about some particular drawbacks
A Tablet/Laptop is much more expensive than a notebook
They depend on batteries
They can cause a distraction for users
Trang 6In the context of our research, there are two types of data that we use: primary data and secondary data
on our research once the data has been fully evaluated
2 Secondary data
We used a variety of Internet resources in addition to original data Several websites were used to obtain useful information such as Laptop or Notebook: Which is Better to Take Notes With? College Raptor Do you need notebooks in college, or can ,
you just use a laptop? - Quora to have more details about the benefits and drawbacks of using digital tools and traditional notebooks
VIII Literature review
Our group's report dealt with the choice of school supplies of K64 NEU students with theaim of researching students' personal views on each specific type of school supplies, focusing on using laptops, iPads and notebooks
The report covered the concept of choice and this concept was explained based on the theory of “The Buyer Decision Process “ which was first introduced by John Dewey in
1910 and expanded by Engel, Blackwell, and Kollat in 1968
This report is a summary and results drawn after our group's survey on the behavior of using learning tools of K64 NEU students The questions asked in the survey are practical
in nature with consumer needs and are based on the “Buyer/ Consumer decision process."This process consists of 5 stages, which respectively are: Problem recognition or Need Recognition, Information Search, Evaluation of Alternatives, Purchase Decision, and Post-Purchase Evaluation (source: https://www.iedunote.com/buyer-decision-process)

Trang 8In terms of previous research, there were some studies carried out that related to or
included in our research topic Ipads versus laptops: The effects of mobile device
interfaces on students' attitudes towards technology and learning (Evans Lugalia
Mudanya, University of Northern Iowa, 2012) This research explored the relationship
between attitudes toward technology and learning existed based upon whether or not the
students used mobile devices in class A Comparative Analysis of iPad and Other
M-learning Technologies:Exploring Students’ View of Adoption, Potentials, and Challenges
( Zijian Gong, J D Wallace, Abilene Christian University, 2012) This study employed
survey methodology to specifically target students' perceptions of adoption potentials,
and challenges of mobile learning tools
Compared to the above research, our study is more generalized and extended in the
aspect of objects Particularly, we mentioned a traditional learning tool besides laptops
and tablets, which is notebook In fact, although nowadays most students have a tendency
to use e-devices to take notes while studying, notebook is still a popular, cheap, and
convenient tool for many learners Moreover, through the investigation taken, we also
suggested some solutions that might help students optimize the use of laptop, which is
one of the most favored tool for study at universities in recent years
B MAJOR FINDINGS
It was undisputed that education plays a pivotal role in contemporary society. Therefore, students took notes in class in a variety of methods After careful research, wehad gathered enough data to address the three research questions we had outlined in theintroduction section In light of the three questionnaire items, we divided this section intothree primary parts The first part was about the choice of K64 NEU students amongnote-taking tools and the reasons The second part was about the drawbacks that laptopsbring about and the third part was about some suggestions to optimize the use of laptops

Trang 9overview about the overall percentage of note-taking tools used by K64 NEU students,
we developed a Google-based online survey with the participation of 40 NEU freshmenand procured a lot of serviceable information regarding the research topic
Figure 1: The tool used for learning purposes (except phone)
The bar chart above depicts the proportions of K64 NEU students from various major classes who choose the tools that are used for educational purposes A closer examination
of the data reveals that Laptop and Notebook have an equal percentage, at 52,5 percent Meanwhile, Tablet has the lower proportion, with 35 percent Except for the three learning tools above, four out of forty students have another option to take-note
b THE REASONS FOR CHOOSING NOTE-TAKING TOOLS
To be more specific about what factors have influenced students' decisions, let’s have a look at the graph below
Trang 10As can be seen in the chart, convenience, which accounts for 65% of the decision-makingprocess, is the top priority factor when selecting school supplies Efficiency is the second most crucial factor, accounting for about 60% of the decision-making process when selecting school items The following three factors are ranked in that order: habit, price, and flexible usage It goes without saying that habit leads to more effective usage of the item, but it is also important to note that 42.5% of participants preferred habit to price, compared to 37.5% It is evident that students nowadays are more willing than in the past
to spend a significant sum of money for educational resources
In an interview between us and a student from Advanced Finance 64A, Tran Vu Linh Giang, she said that “ In my opinion, the most important factor I consider when choosing
a note-taking tool is convenience because apart from class hours, sometimes I need to do work outside such as the coffee shop or even on my car That is the reason why it needs
to be convenient so I can easily carry it in most circumstances” When it comes to Chau Anh from Economic Law 64B, she noted that convenience and efficiency are pivotal but sometimes she also considers the appearance, whether it looks fashionable
After asking the reasons, we also require them to rank five factors which are displayed in the chart below (Figure 3)
Trang 11According to figure 3, a large quantity of participants hold the opinion that convenience and efficiency play a key role, which is exhibited by almost all options going for “very important” and “important” As for the habit, students show their neutrality, which most
of the responses are “Normal” Both price and flexible usage illustrate the balance between “Important” and “Normal” However, mostly freshmen believe that the following factors are necessary when it comes to choosing classroom items
Trang 12
As we have mentioned in the Literature review section, we used the theory of “The Buyer Decision Process” which was first introduced by John Dewey in 1910 and expanded by Engel, Blackwell, and Kollat in 1968 to examine the decision process of K64 NEU students According to the theory, before making the purchase decision at the fourth stage, people need to go through the evaluation of alternatives step According to figure 2, convenience is the main consideration when choosing school supplies When asked which is more handy between a laptop and a tablet, 12 out of 15 interviewees said alaptop Therefore, it is easily understood that “affordable” K64 NEU students are willing
to buy a Laptop rather than a Tablet, 70 percent compared to 45 percent These are some factors that laptop sellers should consider in order to get their product sold
II Drawbacks that laptops bring about
a Decrease in-class efficiency and interaction
Trang 13According to the pie chart above, it can easily be seen that laptops usually distract students from focusing on lecturers' lessons Instead of writing down and thinking about the lessons, students just keep typing any words they heard without paying attention to the content of lectures Consequently, learners might perform ineffectively on any tests and receive low scores since they did not listen carefully to the teachers' guidance In addition, laptops also reduce the interaction between teachers and students, or even among learners Using laptops may lead to lack of eye contact, group discussions and gesture exchange as students spend all of their concentration on a screen only Those are two big problems which have always annoyed lecturers and affected some of them to ban students from making use of laptops as a type of study device in class.
b Limited battery backup
No matter what type of notebook consumers purchase, a battery problem will inevitably arise sooner or later A laptop battery should last for around one to two years, providing uptime of at least two hours Besides, the amount of work and the number of processes operating have a major impact on the battery backup and longevity This has a proportionate impact on the motherboard, system bus, circuitry and cache memory Userswill likely need to replace their laptop batteries within a few years after purchase if they have resource-intensive apps installed They might also have to pay a little bit more for this since an original battery is more expensive than a compatible one In comparison to notebooks, almost 40% of participants agree that tablets and laptops have less battery life
Trang 14Laptops and tablets mostly require users to have basic knowledge of how to use adigital device or software However, even when knowing all the simple and basicinformation and instructions, users might have to deal with technical issues Studentsmight face severe problems due to this Firstly, digital devices might malfunction atimportant times Being confronted with the blue screen of death in the middle of a lessonmay be incredibly upsetting and frustrating Students then would lose their on-writingnotes and time fixing the error, leading to missing out on parts of the lecture Secondly, slow internet connections are expected when studying in class or at home Students have
to enter links or websites required for the subject, sometimes it could be an online exam. Therefore, sluggish internet connections might lead to not catching up with the lesson oreven being not allowed to take the exam
III Suggestions to optimize the use of laptops
a) Avoid installing distracting programs
Another significant issue with laptop use in the classroom is multitasking Although we frequently view the capacity for multitasking as a positive trait, multitasking actually reduces productivity
Just getting rid of plainly distracting apps like music and games is the beginning In order
to avoid getting distracted by emails, tweets, directions, Facebook likes, and other notifications, turn off all push notifications as well By doing this, students will be able toconcentrate on the subject at hand and prevent bothering or disturbing your classmates.(Sources:https://www.masterstudies.com/article/five-ways-to-make-the-most-of-your-laptop-as-a-student/)
b) Use battery saver software
Let's all agree that it's challenging to care for your laptop battery while managing the things you need to complete Laptops do not have any built-in sophisticated battery monitoring and diagnostic facilities, in contrast to our smartphones Therefore, it is challenging to follow the guidelines and allow them to use less energy
