Report Title:
Commencement report for trials established in 2006 to compare performance of local and introduced tropical pines in Vietnam
Trang 2INTRODUCTION
CARD Project 033/VIE seeks to review existing experience with and performance of several tropical conifer species in Vietnam, particularly Caribbean Pine, and to establish further trials of improved genetic material, including hybrids
The project will also provide capacity building for Vietnamese forest research institutions
relating to Pinus tree improvement and mass propagation systems via training in Queensland and
Vietnam, development of small-scale hedge and nursery infrastructure, and a study tour to Australia, involving innovative Vietnamese forest managers and researchers
Finally, the project will build awareness among large and small-scale forest growers including ethnic minorities, through the establishment of collaborative demonstration plantings in priority
regions for Pinus plantation expansion, supported by appropriate training
This report relates to Output 1.2 of the Project: “Establish genetic evaluation trials to compare
performance of locally available and introduced pines (especially Pinus caribaea and hybrids)
on multiple sites throughout North Central, Central Coast and Central Highlands regions of Vietnam
PROGRESS
Description of Sites
Table 1 describes key features of six sites where genetic evaluation trials have been established
A seventh site near Dong Ha on the Central Coast is proposed for planting however
arrangements have not yet been finalised
Photos for some of the sites are included in Appendix 3
Genetic Material Treatments
Table 2 lists the range of genetic material treatments used at each site Generally speaking,
plants for the trials were raised at the RCFTI Nursery in Cam Quy, Ba Vi for sites in northern Vietnam and at the Cam Ly Nursery, Lam Dong Forest Research Centre for the Central
Highlands sites
Additional local treatments were sourced from RCFTI (local Pinus caribaea var hondurensis) and from local nurseries (Pinus merkussii)
Experimental design and layout
Generally speaking, the trials were laid out as 6 row x 6 tree (36 tree) plots for each treatment,
arranged as a Randomised Complete Block (RCB) design with 4 replications Appendix 1
includes a site map for each site
Early survival, early growth and re-filling
Following early losses, some sites were re-filled with plants within the first couple of months of planting In addition, some sites have recently been assessed for survival and early age height growth Results will be reported at a later stage
Protocols for trial management, data collection, analysis and reporting
The agency responsible for overall co-ordination of the trials is the Research Centre for Forest Tree Improvement (RCFTI) based in Hanoi The nominated contact person is:
Name: Mr Phi Hong Hai
Position title: Deputy-director of RCFTI
Trang 3Contact Details: Phone No 844 913309746/ 844 8389813
Email: phi.hong.hai@fsiv.org.vn
Responsibilities for this position include:
• Subject to availability of funding, co-ordinate trial assessments, based broadly on the
schedule listed below:
(a) Year 1: Survival, Height (cm)
(b) Year 3: Survival, Height (cm), Diameter at breast height over bark (DBHOB)
(c) Year 5: Survival, Height (dm), DBHOB (cm), Tree form & health assessment
(d) Year 10: Survival, Height (dm), DBHOB (cm), Tree form & health assessment
• Enter data into an electronic database for secure storage
• Co-ordinate data analysis and reporting using existing resources Australian partners may be able to assist
• Distribute results and reports to site managers and Australian Team Leader
Appendix 2 lists the names of local site managers responsible for management of the relevant
trial site Responsibilities include:
• Protect trials from damaging or competing agents such as over-topping weeds, animal browsing, fire and firewood collection;
• Monitor health of trials and report any issues of interest (eg pest or insect damage, wildfire, general decline in tree health, interference by other forest users); and
• Provide local assistance to assess trials as requested by RCFTI Co-ordinator
FUTURE DIRECTIONS
Future work required for this series of trials includes:
• Plant remaining site at Dong Ha when weather conditions are suitable
• Update this report to include Dong Ha details when confirmed
• Collate and report early age growth and survival data for the various trials
• Continue to maintain trial sites free from competing weeds and other interference
• Periodic assessment and reporting as per responsibilities outlined in this document
