project
3 Methods used for training courses
The training materials were prepared and used for distribution to participating and other local farmers on
the technologies available and relevant to each farming system The materials are now available from
GRRC for goat farmers in Centre The training materials were modified according to experiences of local
practice and technologies tested during 2 and half years implemented the project for suitable and useful
to meet the particular needs of farmers in central Vietnam
Teacher groups are consultants from GRRC, local extension staffs (Mr Vu in Thuan Bac, Mr Sang in

Trang 4CD Appendix 11 Review of outcomes of workshops held in Ninh Thuan, Binh Thuan and Lam
Dong provinces (June 4-11 2008)
Review of activities During this visit to Vietnam, the final 5 farmer workshops were held in Ninh
Thuan (Communes Xuan Hai, Cong Hai), Binh Thuan (communes Vinh Hao, Binh Tan) and Lam Dong (commune La Loan) 35 participants were invited to each workshop, and were provided with writing materials and 4 sets of technical notes on the topics of the workshop Each participant was
given D100,000 (A$6.25) to cover the days expenses (travel, lunch) While half of the invitees were
women, many less women came All participants were expected to attend a field demonstration of the techniques described in the morning lecture sessions
Xuan Hai Workshop, Xuan Hai Commune, Ninh Hai, Ninh Thuan
This workshop was run on 3rd June 2008 at the Xuan Hai Commune hall, starting 8 am, and finishing with a demonstration on Mr Thanh and Mr Duc farm nearby Little interest was shown in any
of the innovations there, and little discussion was evoked

Cong Hai Workshop, Cong Hai Commune, Thuan Bac, Ninh Thuan
This workshop was run on 5th June 2008 at the Cong Hai Commune hall, starting at 8 am, and finshing with a demonstration on Mr Hoa’s farm Mr Hoa proved to be an enthusiastic and informed instructor for the workshop group

This workshop was run on 9th June 2008 at the Binh Tan Commune hall, starting at 8 am and finishing also after a visit to Mr Lang’s farm for a demonstration of the practises decribed in the morning lectures Unfortunately, the electricity was off all day making the presentations more difficult, and discussion groups were held mostly outside

Da Loan Workshop, Da Loan Commune, Duc Trong, Lam Dong
This workshop was run on 11th June 2008 at the Da Loan Commune hall, starting at 8 am with lectures up to lunchtime Unfortunately it rained heavily this afternoon making roads impassable and not possible to travel to Mr Lung farm where the demonstration was to be held in the afternoon Consequently there was no demonstration component to this workshop

Plan of Action The outcomes of these workshops are not clear, and there appeared to be no
evaluation of the teams efforts, nor much input from our trained officers There are no other workshops planned for project funding It was suggested that there is perhaps a need for more advanced level workshops to train more specialist goat advisors in each area, but because goats are a
“new” industry, it seems that only limited resources will be provided by the Provinicial Authorities for such further training It is hoped that perhaps all trained DARD officers will attend the final regional workshop and make a contribution to either discussion or present papers on any observations that they may have made during the time of the project in their areas The extent to which farmers attending these workshops adopt the technologies proposed will be evaluated from a survey to be conducted amongst them in December 2008
