Fire has long been one of the most important forces in our world, and people still question how fire was first discovered According to Greek mythology, Prometheus stole fire from the Olympian gods and gave it to humanity Native American cultures, on the other hand, believe that fire was stolen and brought to humans by an animal such as a wolf or a woodpecker On the Caroline Islands in the western Pacific Ocean, legend has it that Olofat, the son of the sky god, gave fire to humans by sending a bird carrying fire in its beak down to earth Scientifically, there have been various theories behind humans’ control of fire It is from the natural reaction of oxygen and a fuel source that fire is created When lightning struck and caused forest fires, it must have intrigued prehistoric humans So, fire was probably obtained naturally and kept burning for various purposes such as heating or cooking Prehistoric humans may also have figured out how to make fire from sticks and flint, possibly one of their earliest discoveries Many scientists believe that ancient human ancestors known as Homo erectus discovered the controlled use of fire during the Stone Age This belief is supported by evidence in Wonderwerk Cave in South Africa and the Lake Turkana region of Kenya This evidence shows that the early ancestors of humans were able to control fire well over a million years ago Besides keeping them warm and scaring predators away, fire was also used to cook meat and vegetables As suggested by a Harvard anthropologist, this can be considered a decisive point in human history because cooked food promoted brain development and evolution, which transformed our ancestors over a million years ago into the human beings we are today.
