3 Where would a Cheyenne who wanted a traditional way of life prefer to live? a on a reservation b in a big city c anywhere in Montana d on the Great Plains
The statement that is not true is that the Cheyenne have always lived in the same place While Europeans were not the first inhabitants of the US, and today some Cheyenne reside on reservations, the historical movement of the Cheyenne indicates that they have not been permanently settled in a single location Additionally, women in Cheyenne communities historically held a higher status compared to women in other tribes.
5 What is the purpose of the text? a to give a personal account of changes in a lifestyle b to protest against the treatment of Native
Americans c to give some general information about a Native American tribe d to explain why the Cheyenne population is very low
H Read the text below and answer the questions 1-5 Choose a , b , c or d
Before European settlers arrived, the land that is now the United States was inhabited by various Native American tribes, including the Cheyenne, who lived sustainably off the land.
Americans Like other tribes, such as the Sioux and the Navajo, they were put under a lot of pressure to change both where and how they lived.
Four hundred years ago the Cheyenne, whose name means ‘little red-talker’, were based in the Eastern Woodlands
Unlike many Native American tribes, the Cheyenne originally focused on farming, cultivating crops like corn and beans However, by the mid-nineteenth century, they transitioned to a horse culture, becoming skilled hunters of bison on the Great Plains.
The Cheyenne tribe was traditionally governed by the 'Council of Forty-Four,' composed of chiefs and elders who established rules for daily life, warfare, and ceremonies Unlike many other tribes that were strictly patriarchal, the Cheyenne distinguished themselves by allowing women to play a significant role in tribal matters.
In the twenty-first century, many Cheyenne people have adopted lifestyles similar to those in large American cities, while others choose to preserve their traditional way of life by residing on the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation in southeast Montana or the Southern Cheyenne Reservation in central Oklahoma Currently, the total population of the Cheyenne stands at nearly 20,000.

Solar technology offers an effective solution for reducing your ecological footprint while simultaneously lowering utility costs Today, numerous companies, factories, and homes are harnessing energy through photovoltaic installations.
Photovoltaics (PV) is a solar technology that generates electricity directly from sunlight, utilizing panels or cells installed on building roofs These panels harness sunlight to produce electricity and are securely attached to roofs, benefiting from the sun's warmth for weather resistance As one of the fastest-growing sources of alternative energy, PV is rapidly increasing in popularity.
Where to see practical applications of PV
Go see the Oakland University public demonstration project at 4000
Meadowbrook Drive features a student apartment building equipped with a photovoltaic roof designed to capture sunlight from all directions—north, south, east, and west—maximizing energy production while enhancing aesthetic appeal The excess energy generated is supplied to other campus buildings, allowing one photovoltaic-equipped structure to power multiple facilities without this technology Additionally, on cloudy days, the building can draw power from its connected counterparts, ensuring a consistent energy supply with no electricity bills and an uninterrupted hot water supply.

Read the text and answer the questions 1-5 Choose a, b, c or d
The streets of Ubud were as busy as they were noisy
Bicycles, cars, pedestrians, and motorcycles all fought to stay on the road in what seemed like a giant, chaotic mess.
‘Look out!’ Liz yelled, as she pulled me onto the pavement A taxi pulled to a screeching stop within two feet of us
‘Hey!’ I screamed at the driver, ‘You almost hit me!’
A short, young man jumped out of the taxi and ran up to us ‘I’m sorry, madam, you needed a taxi, right?’ he asked, with a huge smile on his face.
In Bali, unconventional driving seems to be the norm, and after exchanging glances with Liz and the cheerful taxi driver, we chose to overlook the situation and accept his offer Considering we had been on our feet all day, the prospect of a 45-minute walk back to our hostel made the decision easy.
Wayan, our friendly driver and avid surfer, eagerly offered to take us surfing when we expressed our desire to try it during our Bali trip.
He even offered to lend us two of his extra surfboards
We were so touched by his generosity, we immediately accepted and arranged to meet up the next day
At sunrise, we gathered with Wayan at Kuta Beach, a popular surfing destination known for its skilled surfers After a brief lesson from Wayan, I gained the confidence to hit the waves, while Liz opted to stay on the beach to practice her skills further.
While surfing, I cautiously navigated the large waves and successfully caught a small one, which boosted my confidence Encouraged by my progress, I paddled out deeper but was soon overwhelmed by a massive wave that sent me tumbling underwater In the chaos, I felt a sharp pain in my leg from a coral cut As I surfaced, gasping for air and crying out in pain, my friends Wayan and Liz quickly came to my rescue, pulling me to shore Breathless and shocked by the sight of my injury, I fainted, revealing my long-standing aversion to blood, even my own.
I woke up in a hospital bed with a doctor treating a deep cut that extended from my ankle to my knee Wayan and Liz had brought me there for care After stitching me up and applying a bandage, the doctor prescribed strong antibiotics and advised me to stay out of the water for the remainder of my trip.
Despite enduring significant pain in the following days, I maintained a positive outlook and vowed to return to Bali soon, both for myself and Wayan My scar would serve as a lasting reminder of my incredible travel adventure.

Since ancient times, people have been leaving their places of birth and travelling in order to explore far away places
(1) This was when the idea of the first postal service came into being.
Before Alexander the Great, there was no structured method for communication However, after leaving his kingdom under his mother's care, he established a courier system that allowed him to receive daily messages from home, enabling him to stay informed about the affairs of his realm.
A number of centuries later, the Romans organised an even more efficient network of couriers throughout their Empire (2) This kept the Senate informed of the progress of their army.
The modern courier service we recognize today originated in Britain on May 1, 1840, with the introduction of the first adhesive postage stamp, which featured a distinctive illustration.
Queen Victoria, who was ruling at the time This tradition of portraying royalty on stamps has continued in Britain up until the present time.
In 1843, Brazil and the Swiss canton of Zurich released their inaugural postage stamps, marking a significant development in postal history The United States joined this trend in 1847, and by 1860, most countries around the globe had introduced their own stamps, reflecting the widespread adoption of this postal innovation.
The initial stamps were not solely intended for mailing; many individuals purchased them as collectibles or due to their aesthetic appeal Additionally, the practice of issuing stamps to commemorate significant events gained popularity during this period Today, nearly every country releases such stamps primarily to generate revenue from philatelists.
These days, philately, as well as being a hobby, is big business
The trading of stamps for purposes beyond their postal use is common, with most stamps being exchanged at prices that differ from their face value Typically, rarer stamps command higher prices in the market.
For example, in 1856 a set of stamps was issued in British Guyana
At the present time there is only one of these stamps still in existence
At an auction in New York in 1980, it was sold for almost a million dollars.
This stamp would be the ultimate possession for any philatelist
(6) There, they can get information and catalogues which keep them up-to-date about new developments.
Philately, the collection and study of postage stamps, is a fascinating hobby enjoyed by millions around the world It not only involves the acquisition of stamps but also delves into the history and art behind them Many collectors focus on specific themes, such as historical events or geographical locations, which adds a personal touch to their collections Additionally, philately encourages social interaction among enthusiasts, often leading to clubs and exhibitions where collectors can share their passion The value of stamps can vary greatly, making it an intriguing investment opportunity for some Overall, philately is a rewarding pursuit that combines history, art, and community.
