INTRODUCTION

Background

English is essential across various sectors such as education, business, and tourism, serving as the global language for communication and career advancement As highlighted by Naved (2015), it is recognized as "the language of Hollywood and international banking." In today's society, mastering English is increasingly crucial for personal and professional growth.

English is the most widely used language globally and dominates online communication Learning English opens up a wealth of resources beneficial for communication, education, and travel Additionally, it allows access to some of the world's best films and music, enhancing both entertainment options and cultural awareness.

In numerous countries, tourism agencies and officials primarily communicate with foreign tourists in English, facilitating better interactions (Dutta, 2017) The presence of bilingual signs at popular attractions, featuring both the local language and English, enhances the travel experience, allowing visitors to explore renowned destinations while gaining insights into diverse cultures and knowledge.

An increasing number of firms globally are adopting English as their official language, as highlighted by The Economist (2014) Vietnam has also embraced this trend, with many foreign companies establishing operations in the country, creating numerous job opportunities for English-speaking employees Proficiency in English is often essential for university graduation, studying abroad, and securing higher-paying positions, making English language skills a significant factor in determining future career success.

Mastering writing is crucial for students in today's society, as it is a fundamental skill needed across various professions, including education and everyday tasks (Taylor, 2017) According to Lester (2017), students with poor writing abilities struggle to thrive in competitive university environments, often due to frequent spelling and grammatical errors that hinder their performance Furthermore, some students fail to recognize the significance of honing their writing skills and neglect to take steps toward improvement.

At HUFLIT University, English serves as the primary medium of instruction for three key reasons: it facilitates access to valuable academic resources, enhances job prospects, and enables effective communication in a global context Recognizing the importance of writing skills, HUFLIT mandates that students complete writing courses throughout their four-year program Mastery of writing is crucial for both academic success and professional development, yet many students struggle to write effectively despite years of English training To achieve their educational and career aspirations, college students can explore various strategies to enhance their writing abilities.

This research paper explores the benefits of reading English materials for enhancing writing skills among Business English seniors Reading is essential for students, as it provides access to a wealth of information presented in text globally By engaging with English readings, students can acquire valuable knowledge that directly contributes to their writing assignments Therefore, this study aims to investigate the impact of English reading on the development of writing skills.

Objectives

Understanding the correlation between reading and writing performance is essential not only in education but also in business and various life aspects This study focuses on identifying the writing challenges faced by HUFLIT seniors and explores how reading can address these issues Additionally, it aims to provide actionable suggestions for enhancing writing skills.

Therefore, the research is carried out with an attempt to find out the answers to the following questions:

1 What are the writing problems HUFLIT seniors majoring in Business English have?

2 What are the applications of reading knowledge in writing compositions of these students?

Scope

This study examines how HUFLIT seniors majoring in Business English utilize reading materials to enhance their writing skills, aiming to provide suggestions for improvement While existing research highlights the benefits of reading for writing, there has been a lack of investigation into the perspectives of HUFLIT seniors regarding this relationship and how they leverage reading resources The research employed a questionnaire consisting of nine questions, along with four interview questions to gather insights.

Organization

The contents of this study are divided into five chapters:

Chapter 1: The introduction consists of background, objectives, the scope, and the organization of the study

Chapter 2: This chapter includes the literature review in writing in academic fields and the workplace, advantages of reading, and significance of reading on enhancing writing skills

Chapter 3: This chapter includes descriptions of the respondents, the research tools, the procedure, and data analysis

Chapter 4: Results of the study and interpretations of the research findings are presented

Chapter 5: The study finishes with the conclusion, and recommendations for further studies

LITERATURE REVIEW

The definition of writing skill and its importance

The Common Core Writing Handbook (2012) emphasizes that writing serves multiple purposes, including informing, explaining, narrating, and persuading It acts as a medium for conveying messages to readers, enabling self-expression, sharing information, influencing opinions, and crafting literary creations.

According to Traffis (n.d.) from the Grammarly Blog, there are four primary writing styles: expository, descriptive, persuasive, and narrative Expository writing aims to inform readers about a subject using facts and evidence, commonly found in textbooks and instructional articles Descriptive writing seeks to evoke emotions and sensory experiences through vivid imagery, often seen in poetry and journals Persuasive writing is designed to sway the audience to adopt the author's viewpoint, typically found in letters and advertisements Lastly, narrative writing involves storytelling, exemplified in short stories and novellas.

Based on brochures from Marquette University, writing brings lots of advantages, it helps to:

• And meet the demand in school and workplace

Writing skills are essential in both the workplace and higher education, as effective communication with professors, peers, and employers relies on it (Walsh, 2010, as cited in Klimova, 2012) According to Watanabe-Crockett (2016), writing is a complex skill crucial for students' success in college Students with strong writing abilities tend to excel academically, as writing is integral to various activities throughout their educational journey.

Academic writing is essential in scholarly settings, utilized by researchers, professors, and students to articulate ideas, construct arguments, and participate in academic discourse (Valdes, 2019) Common forms of academic writing include literary analyses, research papers, and dissertations, all of which share characteristics such as a clear purpose, logical structure, supporting evidence, and an objective tone According to Walsh (2010, as cited in Klimova, 2012), mastering writing requires proficiency in three other skills: listening, reading, and speaking Morehouse (2017) further emphasized that writing is a crucial fourth language skill that native speakers develop, highlighting the interdependent nature of these four foundational skills.

According to Williams (2009), effective writing involves expressing thoughts, ideas, and facts in a straightforward and clear manner Strong writing skills are essential for college students for several reasons.

• Students with stronger writing skills have better performance in written examinations

• Excellent writing enables students to properly write research paper

• It prepares undergraduates for future professions

In today's workplace, written communication, encompassing business letters, emails, and meeting minutes, serves as a practical and direct tool for conveying ideas and fostering effective conversations (Guffey & Du-Bacock, 2010, as cited in Decharotchanawirun, 2015) Strong writing skills not only create a positive first impression but also enhance an individual's professional image, making them appear intelligent and organized, which in turn bolsters their organization’s reputation (Petersen, 2019) Excellent writing is essential for career advancement, as employers often favor candidates with well-crafted cover letters over those with errors The rise of the Internet has diminished face-to-face communication, making writing skills increasingly vital in the modern business landscape, where emails and messaging dominate (Le T T., 2018, p.32) As many jobs now require effective written communication for both internal and external purposes, possessing strong writing abilities is crucial for employees (Solomon, 2018).

Elements of good writing

According to Kokemuller (2017), effective writing relies on key elements such as accurate spelling, proper punctuation, correct grammar, and diverse sentence structures He noted that students often make frequent mistakes, including fragment and run-on sentences, which can also challenge even experienced writers (Correcting Common Errors, n.d.).

Wilkins (1972, as cited in Lessard-Clouston, 2012) emphasized the critical role of vocabulary and grammar in writing, stating that while grammar is essential for conveying meaning, vocabulary is fundamental, asserting that "without vocabulary nothing can be conveyed."

Lexical knowledge is crucial for communicative competence and second language acquisition (Schmitt, 2000, as cited in Alqahtani, 2015) A robust vocabulary is essential for effective conversation, comprehension in listening and reading, and for articulating ideas in both speaking and writing Vu T M (2015) emphasizes that a broad vocabulary enhances listening and writing skills, noting that intensive readers tend to perform better in writing assessments.

In 2017, the significance of vocabulary for college students became evident, as it enables them to articulate their thoughts clearly and concisely in educational contexts A well-chosen set of words not only enhances communication but also fosters meaningful connections, underscoring the essential role of language in effective expression.

Grammar organizes words based on eight key terms: verbs, nouns, pronouns, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, and interjections (MacMillan, 2017) It is essential for effectively conveying thoughts and ensuring readers comprehend the writer's perspective (Wilkins, 1972, as cited in Lessard-Clouston, 2012; Joseph, 2010) According to MacMillan (2017), proper grammatical structure is vital for accurately transferring information from the writer to the audience Conversely, poor grammar can confuse readers and lead to a loss of interest in a business or service (Scaros, 2016).

Some ways to improve writing

Good writing skills are not innate talents but rather the result of dedicated practice and effort Writers can significantly enhance their abilities by committing time to develop this essential skill.

To enhance your writing skills, it is essential to learn English writing rules, practice regularly, seek feedback, and read frequently (Vamos, 2017) Techniques recommended by Gray-Grant (2016) and Codes (2019) include extensive reading, mastering grammar rules, revising work, and consulting with native speakers According to essay-writing expert Hanski (2017), becoming a proficient writer hinges on reading more, as he states, “No good writing is possible without reading.” With the numerous benefits of regular reading and the abundance of accessible resources, improving writing skills becomes a straightforward endeavor.

Definition and benefits of reading in English

English is essential in today's global landscape, serving as the primary language for a vast array of materials across various fields, including education, economics, politics, and technology Many significant texts are translated into English, often exclusively, making it crucial for accessing renowned literary works, such as those by William Shakespeare, particularly in regions with lesser-known languages Furthermore, English constitutes approximately 80 percent of online content, with countless websites catering to diverse needs Consequently, it is reasonable to view English as the dominant language of science, global trade, and mass culture.

Reading offers an accessible and cost-effective means to acquire knowledge, particularly in English, which dominates academic literature (Naved, 2015) Libraries provide a wealth of books across various subjects, while the Internet has significantly expanded access to information in recent decades Additionally, advancements in technology have made it possible to find free reading materials on numerous websites, further enhancing learning opportunities for everyone.

Reading plays a vital role in our lives, allowing us to acquire knowledge through various mediums such as news articles, road signs, and language learning resources According to Mokatsi (2005, as cited in Annamalai & Muniandy, 2013), reading is essential for language acquisition and lifelong learning The significance of reading in English is heightened by its status as a global language, making it particularly important for foreign language learners, including university students, as it not only enhances their understanding but also broadens their knowledge base.

Reading is a powerful tool for self-discovery and understanding diverse cultures, as it exposes individuals to new ideas and experiences (Klimas, n.d.; Wong, 2012) It allows readers to learn from the wisdom of authors across various genres, whether it be books, news articles, or comics Many successful individuals, including billionaire investor Warren Buffett, Microsoft founder Bill Gates, and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, emphasize the importance of reading in their lives, dedicating significant time to it—Buffett spends 5-6 hours daily, Gates reads 50 books a year, and Zuckerberg tackles one book each week (Weller, 2017).

Reading significantly enhances mental health, fosters creativity, and develops language skills, as noted by Felecia (2018), who calls it “a mental simulation exercise” that activates the mind and helps prevent dementia Regular reading not only exercises the brain but also improves memory, analytical thinking, and writing skills (Silva, n.d.) A Harvard Medical School study (2007) found that reading before bedtime enhances sleep quality, leading to improved memory, better mood, and reduced illness risk (McCullum, n.d.) Additionally, reading serves as an effective stress reliever, with Hurst (n.d.) asserting it is the best way to unwind By broadening knowledge across various subjects, reading encourages new ideas and perspectives Winter-Hébert (2018) supports these benefits, highlighting mental stimulation and stress reduction, while Lewis’s 2009 study at the University of Sussex revealed that reading reduces stress by 68%, outperforming other relaxation methods like walking and listening to music.

2.5 Benefits of reading in English on improving writing skills

Developing comprehensive reading skills is crucial for students as it enhances their language and writing abilities, which are vital for academic success and future opportunities (Hoss, 2017) Engaging with foreign language texts not only improves reading but also strengthens essential skills like writing, speaking, and listening As language reflects culture (Brams, 2017), reading foreign literature serves as an effective and accessible method for language acquisition Many experts argue that proficient writers are often avid readers, highlighting the significant role reading plays in fostering good writing skills.

Watanabe-Crockett (2016) highlights that successful writers are often avid readers, which is essential for learners to understand English writing styles Many authors and educators agree that enhancing writing skills requires increased reading Holdridge (2015) asserts that improving reading is the first crucial step to better writing As writers read more, they gain a deeper understanding of language mechanics, ultimately becoming more proficient in their writing.

According to Winter-Hébert (2018), reading enhances knowledge, expands vocabulary, and improves writing skills, as writers often emulate the style, word choice, and sentence structure of what they read This influence is particularly evident among undergraduates, whose writing reflects their professors' academic styles, contributing to a trend where academics adopt a formal writing approach Krashen (1993, as cited in Annamalai & Muniandy, 2013) supports this view, stating that reading fosters a strong writing style, a rich vocabulary, and advanced grammar, leading to improved spelling Klimas (n.d.), with over 20 years of language teaching experience, also emphasizes that engaging with reading materials in the target language helps learners internalize vocabulary and grammar rules, ultimately enhancing their writing abilities.

Many writers emphasize the connection between reading and writing skills Rosen (n.d.) suggests that reading in English enhances vocabulary, grammar, and writing abilities simultaneously He found that reading and writing influence each other, highlighting the importance of reading extensively and writing regularly to develop writing skills effectively.

T H (2016, p.9) identifies that the most efficient way to improve writing skill is ceaselessly reading and writing exercise Vu H S (2015, p.67) showed that you should simultaneously learn reading and writing He further recommended reading all kinds of materials There are many types of reading materials, whatever we read it helps “Read, read, read Read everything trash, classics, good and bad, and see how they do it Just like a carpenter who works as an apprentice and studies the master Read! You'll absorb it Then write If it's good, you'll find out If it's not, throw it out of the window.”, wrote William Faulkner (as cited in Huffpost, 2013).

METHOD

In April 2019, a survey was conducted during the second semester of the academic year, where participants were given a questionnaire and instructed to respond honestly within a 4-minute timeframe After collecting the completed questionnaires, the researcher randomly interviewed five Business English seniors who were not part of the original group The data from both the questionnaire and interviews were then converted into numerical symbols and summarized for analysis.

Data analysis

The study utilized both quantitative and qualitative methods for data analysis Data from the questionnaire was organized in Excel, facilitating efficient management and analysis, as well as enabling effective comparisons of large datasets Key insights from the interviews were summarized to highlight the main points The subsequent chapter will present the findings and interpretations of the study.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS

Discussion

4.1 The result of the questionnaire

The study involved fifty-five contributors, comprising 20% male and 80% female participants All contributors were seniors enrolled in seven Business English classes, highlighting the demographic diversity of the group.

A survey conducted among HUFLIT seniors reveals that a significant majority, 70%, perceive writing in English as a challenging skill, while only 4% find it easy Additionally, 26% of the respondents consider their writing ability to be at a medium level These findings indicate that confidence in writing skills is low among students, with most believing that writing poses considerable difficulty.

Figure 4.1.2 illustrates the writing challenges encountered by students, with respondents able to select multiple answers The most significant issue identified is a lack of vocabulary, reported by 90% of participants Additionally, grammatical errors were noted by 80% of respondents, while poor sentence structure and a lack of ideas were cited by 60% and 40%, respectively.

The reading habits of HUFLIT seniors, as illustrated in Figure 4.1.3, indicate a need for improvement The pie chart reveals that no respondents reported never engaging in reading; however, a significant portion, 58%, indicated they read English materials only sometimes Additionally, 30% of the respondents displayed poor reading habits, while only 12% reported reading regularly Overall, the data suggests that enhancing reading practices among these students is essential.

A survey of students' perspectives on their learning from reading English materials reveals that 94% of participants expand their vocabulary through reading Additionally, 70% report gaining knowledge of grammar, while 56% learn about ideas and 46% focus on sentence structures Notably, only 24% of the respondents, representing 12 students, indicate that they acquire strategies by reading others' works.

Figure 4.1.5 reveals that a significant majority of students, 86%, favor reading model texts relevant to their writing tasks prior to starting their writing Additionally, nearly 70% of students believe that instructional books enhance their writing abilities Textbooks rank third, with over 62% of participants finding them beneficial Conversely, only 32% of students consider literature helpful for improving their writing skills.

The data reveals that 88% of respondents prefer writing models for guidance, while 72% opt for instruction books In contrast, only 40% believe that course books are useful for writing, and 62% utilize textbooks as a resource to enhance their writing skills Additionally, 40% of respondents indicate that reading literature contributes to improving their writing abilities.

All respondents unanimously agreed that good writers are those who read extensively They recognized the significant role of reading materials in enhancing their writing skills and acknowledged the need to read more to further improve their craft.

4.2 The result of the interview

Students were asked to rank the four basic language skills—listening, speaking, reading, and writing—from easiest to hardest, focusing particularly on the perceived difficulty of writing Their responses revealed a variety of opinions regarding the challenges associated with mastering writing skills in English.

Writing is the most challenging skill for me, while the other three skills—reading, listening, and speaking—are not necessarily easy If I were to rank these skills from easiest to hardest, it would be reading first, followed by listening, speaking, and finally writing as the most difficult.

“In my opinion, it is speaking They would be in the order of listening, reading, writing, and speaking.”

“I think it is listening Reading is the easiest, then writing, speaking, and listening.”

“I find writing most difficult I am going to say reading first, listening, speaking, and writing.”

“I think speaking is the most difficult skill among four skills Reading, listening, writing, speaking.”

Writing is often perceived as the most challenging skill among students, with two out of five ranking it as the hardest, while another two selected speaking Only one student considered listening to be the most difficult skill, and none chose reading This highlights the common struggle many face with writing compared to other communication abilities.

Nguyen Thi Tu Cam (15DH710585) identified this skill as the second most challenging In contrast, reading was perceived as the easiest skill by four students among the four skills assessed.

The inquiry, "Is mastering writing skills challenging? What aspects contribute to the difficulty of writing?" was posed to gain insights into participants' views on their writing struggles.

Many individuals struggle to remember and effectively utilize the extensive vocabulary they have learned Additionally, crafting complex sentences and ensuring cohesive connections between sentences and paragraphs can be challenging.

“Yes I have a lack of vocabulary and do not know what words to use in specific cases.”

“Yes I need to acquire vast numbers of words, and grammar rules, because when writing, I have to use all these to make good works or tasks.”

“Yes There are a lot of vocabulary words and grammar rules I struggle with using proper words and sometimes make small grammatical mistakes.”

“Not really difficult, but it takes time and effort to master.”

All interviewees, except one, acknowledged that mastering writing skills is challenging, although one respondent believed it can be achieved with time and effort The primary issues identified in their English writing were related to vocabulary, as reported by four students, highlighting difficulties in vocabulary usage, including a lack of words and choices Grammar also emerged as a concern, noted by two participants, while one student expressed difficulties in constructing complex sentences and maintaining coherence in their writing.

CONCLUSION

Conclusion

Despite years of English study and numerous writing courses, HUFLIT students struggle with writing skills due to insufficient vocabulary, grammar knowledge, and poor reading habits A survey was conducted to explore the positive impact of English reading on students' writing abilities The findings of this study led to key conclusions regarding the relationship between reading and writing proficiency.

The survey results revealed that HUFLIT seniors face notable writing challenges, primarily due to a limited vocabulary and frequent grammatical errors The data gathered from questionnaires and interviews provided essential insights into how reading materials can help address these issues.

This study confirms that reading enhances vocabulary and grammar skills, which are crucial for writing performance among HUFLIT seniors The survey results indicate a positive correlation between students' linguistic knowledge gained from reading materials and their writing abilities, highlighting the significant impact of reading on developing essential linguistic skills.

Nguyen Thi Tu Cam (15DH710585) highlights that extensive reading in a particular language enhances writing skills in that language This finding aligns with Klimas's research, which suggests that voraciously consuming information contributes to improved writing proficiency.

Developing good reading habits significantly enhances vocabulary acquisition, which is crucial for students The research indicates that students recognize the importance of reading to improve their writing skills This finding challenges Lester's (2017) hypothesis that some students are unaware of the significance of writing skills and do not take steps to enhance them.

However, it remains unclear what types of reading materials are most beneficial and how they actually improve participant’s writing skills.

Limitations

This research aims to highlight the impactful role of English reading in enhancing the skills of HUFLIT seniors majoring in Business English However, the study faced certain limitations.

This research conducted a small survey limited to HUFLIT students, specifically targeting fifty-five seniors majoring in Business English Due to the limited number of participants and the narrow focus of the study, the accuracy of the findings may not be representative of the broader student population.

Due to constraints in time and resources, it is important to recognize that the findings of this study may not be applicable to all universities nationwide.

The researcher would like to put forward some suggestions for further researches

Future research should focus on the same issue but aim for more reliable results by expanding the questionnaire and conducting interviews with a larger sample of students Additionally, incorporating a test on English writing skills in the questionnaire will help assess the respondents' proficiency in this area.

For enhanced reliability, future research should involve a larger participant pool from multiple universities and countries This broader scope allows for the exploration of more issues, ultimately leading to more trustworthy research outcomes.

Extended research duration enables researchers to gather more relevant and reliable results Future studies should emphasize the impact of reading on students' writing at the tertiary level by incorporating proficiency tests to assess writing competencies and the influence of reading materials on writing improvement.

In terms of suggestions to improve writing skills for students, they should acquire an adequate number of words in order to write better It is also needed to use
