Chinese letter writing is a key focus and challenge within the application of the Chinese language, making it an essential component of second language writing instruction The unique format, punctuation, and language requirements of Chinese letters have a wide range of applications These characteristics impose higher demands on teaching methods for second language acquisition and the practical writing abilities of students In fact, even native Chinese speakers can make errors in letter writing, highlighting the difficulties faced by Vietnamese students learning this second language.

In the first semester of their sophomore year, students from the Chinese Department at the Foreign Languages University of Hue began their study of modern Chinese letter writing through the course "Practical Writing in Chinese." However, the focus was limited to specific aspects of this skill.

In letter writing, it is common to encounter errors due to the varying degrees of familiarity between individuals, as they may only have a superficial understanding of each other rather than a deep knowledge.

This article emphasizes the significant benefits of understanding and mastering modern Chinese letter writing Consequently, I have chosen "An Analysis of Errors in Modern Chinese Letter Writing by Students of the Chinese Department at the University of Foreign Languages, Hue University" as the topic for my graduation thesis The aim is to identify the types and rates of errors in letter writing among these students, analyze the underlying causes of these errors, and propose corresponding teaching methods to address them.

This article analyzes 100 written assignments titled "A Letter to a Friend" by students from the Chinese Department at the University of Foreign Languages in Hue All assignments were typed in Word documents, with a focus on male students' contributions.

This article analyzes data on errors made by students in the Chinese department at the Foreign Language University of Hue University, focusing on over 40,000 words from 7 essays and 93 writings It explores the common mistakes in format, punctuation, and language used in Chinese letter writing By summarizing these errors, the study aims to identify patterns and provide insights for improving teaching methods in Chinese letter writing for students at the university.

When discussing the format of letters, it is essential to mention Zhang Duanzhi's (2005) "Etiquette in Letters," Wan Qi's (2008) "Chinese Letter Writing Techniques," and Xu Zhengyuan's (2010) "Greetings in Letters." These studies primarily focus on the format, structured organization, and appropriate language used in Chinese correspondence.

From a general perspective on error analysis, Bai Yaqing's (2009) study "Analysis and Reflection on Errors in Chinese Letter Writing by International Students" is limited as it only selected 12 Chinese letter compositions from international students, resulting in findings that may lack objectivity and comprehensiveness.

This article focuses on the format and writing style of the body of a letter, primarily based on the "Chinese Practical Writing Course" studied by students in the Chinese Department at the Foreign Languages University of Hue University.

The salutation is the respectful address from the sender to the recipient, typically aligned to the left on the first line It should be followed by a colon.

After writing the salutation, it is important to include a greeting, also known as a pleasantry This greeting is typically written on the next line, with a two-space indentation.

The body of a letter is its main part After the greeting, start a new line and indent two spaces for the content The language used in the body should be clear and concise, ensuring that the recipient can easily understand the message.

After completing the main body of the letter, it is customary to add a few closing remarks These closing remarks, or blessings, typically fall into two categories based on the content.

Commonly used phrases include "Best wishes," "Wishing you happiness every day," "Wishing you good health," "Wishing you all the best," and "Sincerely." These can also be combined, such as "Wishing you a happy family and all the best," "Wishing you happiness every day and everything goes smoothly," or "Wishing you progress in your studies and good health."

The content of a letter should be tailored to the recipient's specific situation For example, one might write "Wishing you a speedy recovery" to a patient, "Happy holidays" during festive seasons, or "Have a pleasant journey" to someone who is traveling.

The closing signature includes both the writer's name and the date The name serves as the writer's self-identification, indicating their identity to the recipient Typically, only the name is written, although some may precede it with a title that reflects their relationship with the recipient.

When writing a date in a letter, it should be placed on the line below the salutation Whether to include the year, month, and day depends on the context; if correspondence is frequent and a recent letter was sent, just the month and day may suffice However, if it has been a long time since the last communication, it is advisable to include the full date with the year, month, and day.

Begin by stating the name of the country; if the address is within China, this can be omitted Next, provide the recipient's specific province (or municipality/autonomous region), city (or county), district, road, street (or lane), and door number For high-rise residential buildings, include the room number as well.

Begin by writing the sender's address, followed by the sender's name on a new line After the name, you may include parentheses with the word "Sender" or "Confidential" inside.

The analysis focuses on aspects such as format, language usage, and punctuation, based on the students' letters titled "A Letter to a Friend."

Analysis of 100 writing samples reveals that most errors exhibit strong patterns, with random mistakes making up a minimal proportion While these random errors have little impact on the data and results, they are still categorized as a type of error in Chinese letter writing.

In the 2013 application textbook on Chinese letter writing, it is specified that the salutation must be followed by a colon and placed at the beginning of the first line, aligned to the left The salutation in personal letters varies based on the relationship between the sender and the recipient, categorizing them into three types: addressing elders, peers, and juniors.

In the letter titled "A Letter to a Friend," the salutation typically reflects an equal relationship, often including the recipient's name or title Common forms of address include "Dear Mary," "Dear Friend Mary," or "Classmate Mary." Additionally, it is acceptable to follow the salutation with a greeting, such as "Dear Classmate Mary, hello."

After studying Chinese for some time, many students experience negative interference due to the habits and influences of their native language While the layout structure of letter writing in Vietnamese is fundamentally similar to that in Chinese, there are notable differences in punctuation, structure, and word choice that can adversely affect Chinese letter writing.

In Vietnamese letters, there are three main structures: the opening, the main body, and the closing The opening includes the date and the salutation, with the date positioned at the top right and formatted from smallest to largest, following the order of location, day, month, and year Unlike Chinese letters, Vietnamese salutations are followed by a comma The main body corresponds to the content of the letter, while the closing combines blessings and the sender's name, similar to the closing in Chinese letters.

In letter writing, the primary difference between Vietnamese and Chinese punctuation lies in the use of periods, commas, and pause marks In Vietnamese, the period is represented by a small black dot (.), while in Chinese, it is depicted differently.

In Vietnamese, the comma (",") is used to separate clauses instead of the enumeration comma ("、") found in other languages This difference in punctuation can lead to confusion and misuse among students if they do not fully understand these rules.

Also known as interlingual interference or interlingual transfer, this phenomenon occurs when learners of Chinese, after studying for a period, rely on their native language knowledge due to unfamiliarity with the target language rules, which ultimately disrupts their learning process.

The writing format of Chinese letters is quite complex, and students with a limited understanding of formatting norms often mistakenly apply one format's rules to another For instance, some students may indent all parts of the letter like the main text, while others might omit spacing entirely Additionally, the presence of similar-looking characters and synonyms in Chinese can lead to confusion If students do not grasp the meanings and usages of Chinese words accurately, they may frequently misuse them, such as confusing “历” with “厉” or “蓝” with “篮.”

Students in the Chinese department of the Foreign Languages University under Hue University often make errors in learning Chinese due to interference from their native language However, these mistakes can be minimized or avoided through targeted teaching and practice.

In addition to the negative transfer from the mother tongue and the target language affecting students, there are other factors contributing to the writing errors in letter composition among students in the Chinese department of the Foreign Languages University at Sunhua University Primarily, these errors stem from inappropriate teaching methods and learning strategies.

In the teaching of letter writing at the Foreign Languages College of Hue University, instructors typically follow the "Chinese Application Writing Course" (2013) However, due to the specific structure and norms of letter writing, teachers often focus solely on the letter writing examples from the current lesson, neglecting to discuss the connections and differences between various types of application writing As a result, students struggle to grasp the overall principles of letter composition, leading to confusion and mistakes when faced with different contexts.

During severe outbreaks, students at the Foreign Language University of Hue University are required to engage in online learning, where some teachers assign tasks that involve self-directed study, group work, and lesson design Students present their prepared speeches to classmates, which is a valuable teaching method that enhances self-learning and soft skills However, many students focus solely on their own presentations, neglecting their peers' contributions, leading to a lack of preparation and attention to others' lessons This behavior negatively impacts overall learning efficiency, preventing some students from fully grasping the teaching process.

Most students do not frequently engage in Chinese letter writing in their daily lives, leading to a lack of emphasis on this skill As a result, without practical application, even previously learned knowledge can be easily forgotten Compared to students studying Chinese abroad, those at domestic institutions, such as the Chinese Department of Foreign Languages at Sūnhuà University, often do not perform as well This disparity arises because domestic students have fewer opportunities to use their second language in conversation This highlights the importance of the learning process, particularly in foreign language acquisition Therefore, it is crucial to integrate both study and practice to enhance proficiency in Chinese.

Moreover, learning methods and attitudes play a crucial role in academic success Even if you benefit from excellent teaching and appropriate materials, a lack of diligence, practice, and application can render these advantages ineffective Therefore, students must maintain a positive learning attitude and adopt effective study strategies to improve their grades consistently.

The errors in Chinese letter writing among students in the Chinese Department of the Foreign Languages University at Hue University stem from various factors This article analyzes three primary reasons: negative transfer from their native language, negative transfer of target language knowledge, and inappropriate teaching and learning strategies Among these factors, the aforementioned three are particularly significant in understanding the writing errors made by these students.

The significant impact of differences in Chinese and Vietnamese letter writing conventions is evident among students at the Foreign Language University of Hue University, particularly those in the Chinese Department Many students tend to apply their native language norms, resulting in common errors in Chinese letter writing Inadequate teaching policies and a lack of emphasis on the importance of these skills contribute to the students' low proficiency in Chinese letter writing Therefore, it is crucial to address these three factors and implement the suggested recommendations for improvement.

To enhance the Chinese writing skills of students in the Chinese Department at the University of Foreign Languages, Hue University, as well as to improve the quality of teaching and learning, I respectfully present several suggestions that I hope will be beneficial for educational activities.

To enhance teaching effectiveness, it is essential to introduce a structured "template" approach for letter writing This involves creating a systematic format for letters and compiling commonly used vocabulary and sentence structures relevant to various types of correspondence.

To enhance students' understanding of letter formatting, vocabulary, and punctuation norms, it is essential to provide a clear and direct approach In the initial stages of instruction, students should utilize grid paper for practice, reinforcing their learning and helping them avoid the pitfalls of applying their native language's structure.

Thirdly, education should be categorized by native language In teaching Chinese letter writing, it is essential to deepen the comparison between Vietnamese and Chinese in terms of punctuation, format, and fixed expressions.

Enhancing spoken language training provides students with the opportunity to supplement their vocabulary related to letter writing, helping to prevent monotony and dullness in their communication skills.

When addressing students' mistakes, teachers should adopt a gentle and appropriate attitude to explain errors It is important to ensure that students do not feel embarrassed or upset about making mistakes Additionally, teachers should pay attention to common errors that students frequently make in learning Chinese letter writing and emphasize these points during the teaching process, providing clear explanations and careful guidance.

To master the Chinese language, the process and accumulation of knowledge are crucial Effective Chinese letter writing primarily revolves around the emotional exchange between the sender and the recipient.

It is essential to enhance the recitation of classic letters, allowing students to experience the emotional expressions within these writings This practice will help cultivate students' sense of the Chinese language and their thinking skills.

Students should pay close attention to the common mistakes they make in Chinese letter writing If there are areas they are unfamiliar with, they should promptly and actively correct them, ensuring that they do not repeat these errors in the future.
