There are two types of nouns:

Countable nouns

Countable nouns are people or things that can be counted

They include common nouns (referring to a person or thing in a

general sense, e.g article, company, discount) and collective nouns (naming a group of people or things, e.g family,

committee).

For examples: two apples , three pens , a shirt , two cars , a

book , a city, …

Countable nouns can be singular or plural They can be used with

a/an and with numbers and many other determiners.(e.g:these ,a few)

For examples: She’s got two sisters and a younger brother

I’ll take a few magazines with me for the flight

Countable nouns are used in the structures a/ an/ the + singular noun and (the +) plural noun.

We cannot use a/an with these nouns

 To express a quantity of an uncountable noun, use a word or

expression like some, a lot of, much, a bit of, a great deal of, or else use an exact measurement like a cup of, a bag of, 1kg of, 1L of, a handful of, a pinch of, an hour of, a day of

 If you want to ask about the quantity of an uncountable noun,

you ask “How much?”

Uncountable nouns cannot follow the article a/ an and cannot be used

in the plural form Its structure is (the +) singular noun.

a) Some is used in positive statements:

Examples:

• I had some rice for lunch

• He’s got some books from the library

b) It is also used in questions where we are sure about

the answer:

Examples:

• Did he give you some tea? (= I’m sure he did.)

• Is there some fruit juice in the fridge?

c) Some is used in situations where the question is not a request

for information, but a method of making a request, encouraging

or giving an invitation

Examples:

• Could I have some books, please?

• Why don’t you take some books home with

you?
