You would like to take good photographs of real life situations but you have few ideas for pictures I suggest you look around you The everyday world is full of scenes being played by an ever-changing group of actors You probably passed a dozen picture situations without noticing on your way to work this morning
The realistic approach to photography has been perfected in the past
by such masters as Henri Carties-Bresson and Bill Brandt But while you can learn a great deal from looking at the work of others, any success you can hope to achieve in this field has to come from developing an individual
approach
The main requirement for any photographer has little to do with technical matters You must develop an awareness of the world around you and the people who inhabit it, and you should learn to notice when a situation may develop to a point where you will be able to take a good picture Those who have searched his happy state will be prepared when that moment arises, and will simply raise their camera quickly and shoot Others
who are not so aware will be struggling with camera cases and lens caps
Film manufactures must be delighted at the thought of the inexperienced photographer setting out in search of the right situation and the right moment Many miles of costly material have passed through
thousands of cameras as this endless search continues But although a lot of
Trang 7this waste must be put down to inexperience, you will find that even the professionals have to use a lot of film when they are out of shooting
Not every shot is going to be a winner If you look at the work of even the best photographers you’ll notice dozens of pictures have had to be taken only because they lead up to the successful shot of a situation that the photographer has obviously been observing through the lens You may find that you have taken one or two pictures after the right moment has passed as well There is seldom more than one shot which stands out There is just one point where it all comes together, and you often have to waste film to catch that precious moment
16 How can you become a better real-life photographer?
A by watching other photographers at work
B by learning about famous photographers
C by just taking a great many photographs
D by developing skills and ideas for yourself
17 The best real-life photography depends on
A going out and searching for unusual situations
B becoming highly skilled in camera techniques
C being able to tell when a good situation might arise
D having a camera which is easy and quick to use
18 The waste of film in real-life photography is
A expensive and unnecessary
B essential to the production of good pictures
C limited to amateur photographers
D the result of poor choices of subject
19 What is likely to be most successful?
A taking pictures without too much preparation
Trang 8B taking a whole series of similar pictures
C taking great care to set up the situation
D taking one picture at the right moment

England’s highest main-line railway station hangs on to life by a thread: deserted and unmanned since it was officially closed in 1970 Dent, situated high in the hills of Yorkshire, wakes up on six summer weekends
each year, when a special charter train unloads walkers, sightseers and
people who simply want to catch a train from the highest station, on to its platforms
Trang 14But even this limited existence may soon be brought to an end Dent station
is situated on the Settle to Carlisle railway line, said to be the most scenic
in the country But no amount of scenic beauty can save the line from British Rail’s cash problems This year, for the sake of economy, the express trains which used to pass through Dent station have been put on to another route
It is now open secret that British Rail sees no future for this railway line Most of its trains disappeared some times ago Its bridge, built on a grand scale a century ago, is falling down It is not alone Half a dozen railway routes in the north of England are facing a similar threat The problem is a wor out system and an almost total lack of cash to repair its bridges and tunnels are showing their age, the wooden supports for the tracks are rotting and engines and coaches are getting old
If a bridge is dangerous, there is often only one thing for British Rail to do:
go out and find money from another source This is exactly what it did a few month ago when a bridge at Bridlington station was threatening to fall down Repairs were estimated at f 200,000 just for one bridge, and British Rail was delighted, and rather surprised, when two local councils offered half that amount between them

Section B: Read the passage and choose the best answers for the questions that follow them
It is not true that the British talk about the weather more than any other nation In many parts of the world the weather holds just as much fascination Part of fascination arises because the weather in many parts of the world is very difficult to forecast Because Britain is an island sandwiched between a large continent and a large ocean, slight changes in direction of winds in the Atlantic or movements in areas of high or low pressure can make a major difference to our weather
Most of the time our weather is unremarkable But in the last few years weather patterns have been causing so much trouble that it raises the
Trang 21question: is the weather changing to such an extent that it amounts to a change in the climate?
It’s a question that is very difficult to answer The daily and weekly variations in weather are so great that it takes years of careful measurement
to detect changes in the average weather from year to year And to detect changes in the climate involves the worldwide application of a whole number of scientific investigations
However, looking at the distant past and estimating what may happen
in the future based on theoretical possibilities, it seems there are two possibilities The world could be slipping back towards another ice age But
in the shorter term what man is doing may well lead to a heating up of the planet which could delay, if not prevent any forthcoming ice age
It is sudden and expected weather which makes people wonder what is happening to our climate — like the one- in- a- lifetime experience of the vicious storm which swept southern England in autumn 1987 The southern
states of the USA are used to such storms, the southern part of Britain isn’t
And when literally millions of trees were uprooted and millions of pounds worth of damage was done to houses, farms and businesses, people wondered just what was going on It was probably the worst storm in South- East Britain for some 300 years
16 People are more interested in the weather in places where
A the weather changes often
B weather forecasts may be wrong
C the sea affects the climate
D the wind makes a big difference
17 It is very difficult for scientists to discover
A how great the weather changes are
B if the weather is getting worse
Trang 22C if the climate is changing
D what causes so many changes
18 It is very difficult to answer a question if the weather changing affects a
change in the climate because
A it takes years of measurement and application of scientific investigations
B it takes years of measurement to detect changes in the weather
C it involves the application of a number of scientific investigations
D the variations in weather are too great
19 Scientists now think that
A it is impossible to say what the weather will be like
B in future the weather will be the same as in the past
C it will be come hotter all over the world
D the world will certainly be covered with ice
20 What does the storm of 1987 show us?
A Storms can be very damaging to trees and property
B Britain’s climate is becoming more like that of the USA
C.The climate in South-East Britain has been getting worse for 300years
D We no longer know what weather to expect

Section B: Read the passage and choose the best answers for the questions that follow them
How can we know that the birds we see in the south in the winter are the same ones that come north in the spring? Once John J Audubon, a bird lover, wondered about this Every year he watched a pair of little phoebes nesting in the same place He wondered if they were the same birds He decided to put tiny silver bands on their legs The next spring back came the birds with the bands to the very same place Back came the young birds to build their nests on the walls of farm building in the neighborhood The phoebe, it was learned, wintered wherever it was warm enough to find flies
In summer, phoebes could be seen from Georgia to Canada; in winter,
anywhere from Georgia to Florida and Mexico The phoebe was the first kind of bird to be banded, and Mr Audubon was the first birdbander Today
Trang 35there are hundreds of birdbanders all over America These people band all kinds of birds
The government of the United States has a special birdbanding department which makes all the birdbands The bands do not hurt the birds, as they are made of aluminium and are very light They come in different sizes for different birds Each band has a special number On each band are these words: “ Notify Fish and Wildlife Service, Washington D.C”
Anyone who finds a dead bird with a band on its legs is asked to send the band to Washington with a note telling where and when the bird was found
In this way naturalists add to their knowledge of the habits and needs of birds
16 The title below that best expresses the main theme or subject of this selection is:
A The migration of birds
B The work of John Audubon
C The habits and needs of birds
