PART ONE: INTRODUCTION

1 Rationale

As a student studying English Linguistics at Khanh Hoa University, tomake sure that I have four skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writingquite well and confident enough when using English Then I, like otherstudents, have to study English very diligently in my English Linguistic major

However, during the four years of study, I noticed that most of thestudents have problems with fear and worry when writing an essay, havingpresentations in a class using English, and they can not complete Englishreading or listening exams well And the reason is that students are limited interms of English vocabulary, their English is only enough to use in exercises orpresentations with simple topics, but as they do advanced or extended topics, they are very confused and scared when they don’t have enough confidence to

be able to do their best

And most students of English Linguistics at Khanh Hoa University areunsure of themselves about their English vocabulary Firstly, wheneverstudents work in groups for a presentation, most of them believe that assigningthe responsibility to the presenter who is a person that has confidence in usingEnglish to express the presence the most perfect for the group Secondly, theirwriting ability is limited because they do not know how to use new words, andcollocation They almost only use basic words that they used to learn insecondary school or high school This lead to the students struggling withdifficult essays that require a high level of using English vocabulary Finally, students' reading and listening skills are still very limited For more details, because the topics of reading and listening are often diverse and profound, theirvocabulary is not enough to be able to read or listen to understand which wouldlead to students getting bored very easily and often do superficially just to keep

a passing grade in subjects

Thus, the reason I chose this topic to research is that I want to hear moreopinions from students of English Linguistics at Khanh Hoa University about

Trang 7

effective or it is effective but the process of learning more vocabulary is quiteslow From which to offer innovative English learning methods to help studentsfind the ones that they feel more suitable Also, it can help students have moreconfidence when using their English vocabulary in listening, speaking, readingand writing skills in examinations and future jobs.

2 Significance of the study.

Firstly, the study of this topic aims to find out the difficulties thatstudents of English Linguistics are facing in the process of learning vocabulary

Secondly, the study proposes innovative methods of learning Englishvocabulary for students effectively, and helps them not only improve theirvocabulary but also have confidence in using English in the class as well as infuture jobs such as translating, interpreting, teaching, traveling,

Thirdly, the lecturer can suggest these methods to their students in theclass to improve the students' English skills

Finally, the study of the topic brings new experiences for students ofEnglish Linguistic when they can know more different methods and find aneffective way of learning English vocabulary for themselves

3 Aim and objective of the study.

Firstly, the research subjects are students of English Linguistics atKhanh Hoa University

Secondly, the research wants to find out about the current situation ofEnglish Linguistics students ' ability when they learn English vocabulary

Finally, its aim is to propose innovative methods of learning Englishvocabulary for English Linguistics students at Khanh Hoa University

PART TWO: THE CONTENT OF STUDY.

CHAPTER ONE: LITERATURE REVIEW 1.1 Introduction

English is the second language of the world, so almost all countries inthe world learn English to communicate in the study and work withinternational friends, so English has played a very important role in daily lifeand English is also one of the main subjects in schools such as primary schools, secondary schools, high schools until we go to university, we can choose ourfavorite major But all majors must learn a second language, which is English. Thus, for almost all students in all majors, English always plays a particularrole in everyone's learning, and especially for students of English Linguisticbecause it is the most important subject Learning English is put on top thatstudents need to study hard so that when students of English Linguisticgraduate from school, they can be more confident when using English in theirfuture jobs

But to ensure their English output standards, everyone has to go throughalmost all the subjects using English, but the limited vocabulary is the problemthat most of the students are facing make they not confident enough to give apresentation by using English or write a complete essay or do their best Englishtest So what are the students' difficulties when learning English vocabulary? And what English methods should students try for themselves to find the mosteffective way to learn vocabulary?

1.2 Vocabulary learning method

1.2.1 Definitions

What does “vocabulary” mean?: it means all the words known and used

by a particular person (Cambridge Advanced Learners Dictionary)

Dale and O’Rourke (1986) described four levels of word knowledge, which they characterized with four statements:

1 I never saw the word before

2 I’ve heard of it, but I don’t know what it means

3 I recognize it in context, and I can tell you what it is related to

Trang 10

4 I know the word well

Wilkins (1972, as cited in Herberston, 2010) described the importance

of learning vocabulary in his quote, “Without grammar very little can beconveyed, without vocabulary nothing can be conveyed”

Barnhart, Clarence L (1968) described the types of vocabulary

Reading vocabulary:

A person's reading vocabulary is all the words recognized when reading. This class of vocabulary is generally the amplest, as new words are morecommonly encountered when reading than when listening

Listening vocabulary:

A person's listening vocabulary comprises the words recognized whenlistening to speech Cues such as the speaker's tone and gestures, the topic ofdiscussion, and the conversation's social context may convey the meaning of anunfamiliar word

Speaking vocabulary:

A person's speaking vocabulary comprises the words used in speech and

is generally a subset of the listening vocabulary Due to the spontaneous nature

of speech, words are often misused slightly and unintentionally, but facialexpressions and tone of voice can compensate for this misuse

Writing vocabulary:

The written word appears in registers as different as formal essays andsocial media feeds While many written words rarely appear in speech, aperson's written vocabulary is generally limited by preference and context: awriter may prefer one synonym over another, and they will be unlikely to usetechnical vocabulary relating to a subject in which they have no interest orknowledge

Thus, the use of vocabulary in listening, speaking, reading, and writingskills all have different uses, but only when we study English vocabularyseriously and hard we can understand listening tests, we can speak or have apresentation in English fluently and effectively, we can read and understand

Trang 11

using English very perfectly It all depends on how many English words wehave learned ourselves Then why is vocabulary so important when we learnEnglish?

Gray (1939) stated that “Vocabulary is an essential means ininterchanging ideas and of acquiring new experience Man’s growth in ideashas always been accompanied by a corresponding expansion of his vocabulary”.And it is true that when English learners themselves have a rich and diversevocabulary, it will be easier to communicate with foreigners, in addition toworking in different fields such as tourism When it comes to tourism, a tourguide needs to be equipped with solid foundational knowledge as well asEnglish vocabulary related to the topic the tour guide is talking about, such astalking about landscapes, then having a fairly large amount of English words is

an advantage that helps tour guide communicate and talk with foreignersfluently and brings new excitement to foreign tourists when traveling

And with the point of view, Harley (1996) pointed out that vocabularylearning is a vital part of each student’s life English is the second language inthe world, so students have been able to access and learn English at schoolsince elementary school or even earlier In Vietnam, English is one of the mainsubjects that students need to study hard because it is an important part of everystudent's life, especially in school exams or National high school exams

Lewis (1993:23) said that learning vocabulary is the core task in SLA,and any language skills of listening, speaking, reading, and translating, cannotexist without vocabulary Vocabulary learning needs to have effective smartstrategies to help vocabulary learners themselves improve their Englishknowledge as well as listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills Wecannot focus on learning grammar well without paying attention to improvingthe number of English words Learning grammar and learning vocabulary aretwo things that need to go hand in hand to help English learners make moreprogress day by day

Thus, we see that in addition to focusing on learning English grammar, learning English vocabulary is also very important because only when we

Trang 12

ourselves learn and remember a large amount of English vocabulary with avariety of topics, then we will have enough confidence when using English inour study and work.

1.2.2 Vocabulary learning method

There are many methods of learning vocabulary from the traditional way

to the more modern way of learning Most learners have access to English rightfrom primary school or even earlier Normally, learners will receive up to 10new words a day, when they study an English lesson, they will be checked bytheir teachers to help learners can learn by heart vocabulary at home

According to Gardener (2009, as cited in Adger, 2002) vocabulary is notonly confined to the meaning of words but also includes how vocabulary in alanguage is structured; how people use and store words and how they learnwords, and the relationship between words, phrases, categories of words andphrases Therefore, English learners need to have a smart learning strategy that

is effective for learning English when we can learn a vocabulary but knowmany other words related to the vocabulary we learn such as: how to read, write and use nouns, verbs, and adjectives of that vocabulary to apply in asentence with both correct grammar and meaning of the vocabulary

Cohen (1997:43) suggested that there were various ways of attempting

to commit new vocabulary items to memory He classified the strategies intofour main groups which are:

- Rate-repetition: repeating the word and its meaning until it seems tohave stuck

- Structure: analyzing the word according to its root, affixes, andinflections as a way to understand its meaning

- Semantic strategies: thinking of synonyms so as to build a network ofinterlinking concepts, clustering words by topic, group, or type of word, orlinking the word to the sentence in which it was found or to another sentence

- The use of a mnemonic device in order to create a cognitive linkbetween an unfamiliar foreign language word and its translation by means of a

Trang 13

Weaver and Cohen classify strategies for acquiring new vocabularyitems as follows:

- Categorization: according to meaning, part of speech, formal vsinformal language forms, alphabetical order, or types of clothing or food;

- Keyword mnemonics: i.e finding a native language or phrase with asimilar sound, and creating a visual image that ties the word or phrase to thetarget language word;

- Visualization: e.g through mental images, photographs, charts, graphs,

or the drawing of pictures

- Rhyme/rhythm: e.g making up songs or short ditties

- Language transfer: e.g using prior knowledge of the native, target, orother language structures

- Repetition: e.g repeating words over and over to improvepronunciation or spelling, trying to practice the words using all four skills:writing new sentences, making up stories using as many new words as possible, reading texts that contain these new words, purposely using words inconversation and listening for them as they are used by native speakers

Those are effective steps to learning English vocabulary, but it is onlyeffective when learners spend a certain amount of time learning vocabulary, especially for students at universities who are busy studying and working at thesame time The above steps are difficult for them to do Thus, the students need

to change the methods of learning vocabulary more effectively and in a morereasonable time Those are the methods suitable for the 4.0 technologynowadays when everyone has a smartphone

Schmitt (2000) stated that students forget most of the new words afterthe end of the learning session The expanding of rehearsal could help totransfer the new words from the short-term memory to the long-term memory. There are two different types of memory: short-term memory and long-termmemory So what are long-term and short-term memory, is it important invocabulary learning English?

Trang 14

According to Kendra Cherry long-term memory refers to the storage ofinformation over an extended period This type of memory tends to be stableand can last a long time Long-term memory can be further subdivided into twodifferent types: explicit (conscious) and implicit (unconscious) memory If youcan remember something that happened more than just a few moments ago, whether it occurred just hours ago or decades earlier, then it is long-termmemory.

Short-term memory, also known as primary or active memory, is thecapacity to store a small amount of information in the mind and keep it readilyavailable for a short time

So students usually will remember a new word clearly when they arereally impressed with that word For example, an impressive symbolic images

or a short easy-to-remember word, or even a long word which has interestingand impressive pronunciation that makes it easy for students to remember andput it into long-term memory On the other hand, words that are difficult topronounce, difficult to write, are too long or even not impressive for students toremember for a long time, those words only exist in short-term memory whilestudying in class and after the end of the lesson, the vocabulary will also almostdisappear from memory

Therefore, it is necessary to have more innovative methods that aresuitable for students' time when studying at university and flexible in thelearning space not only in the class but also at home or work And those are thefollowing innovative methods:

Firstly, learn vocabulary through word cards

Secondly, learn vocabulary through movies, TV shows, music,

Thirdly, learn vocabulary through English learning apps

Fourth, learn vocabulary through useful English websites

And finally, learn vocabulary through other interesting methods

Elly (1989:174-189) thought that story-telling is a good way for learners

to learn English vocabulary as an input exposure which is a significant way of

Trang 15

presentations is one of the regular activities in the class to improve presentationskills as well as speaking skills With so many different topics, it means that thevocabulary in each topic will also be different For example, when a lecturergives many topics such as telling about a fairy tale you like or analyzing aliterary work, or talking about unique cultural features in Vietnam in othercountries around the world Then, students need to prepare, learn the topic, andhaving the presentation also unintentionally makes them learn new vocabulary

in a very incidental way

So, the point of view of Nation (2001:232) defined incidentalvocabulary learning as an important strategy in vocabulary learning From theviews mentioned above, incidental learning of vocabulary can be defined as akind of learning method from reading, listening, speaking, or writing tolanguage use while the learner’s main intention focuses on the formation oftexts This method includes learning from extensive reading, taking part in theconversation, listening to stories, watching English movies listening to theradio, or other exposure to input and output both out of and in classrooms(Nation 2001:232)

Interactive television is another new media technology that has greatpromise for learning (Pemberton, 2002) Conventional television is already apowerful tool for language learning There is a wealth of anecdotal evidence ofindividuals learning other languages from exposure to televised soap operas, films, and sports reporting Television offers a rich multimedia experience, where learners can immerse themselves in authentic materials from the targetlanguage and culture This material unlike some stilted exchanges found intextbooks tends to be worth watching in its own right, with up-to-date ever-changing content displaying a range of speakers and contexts Many televisionshows constitute important cultural events providing a shared reference forpeople sharing or aspiring to share a culture in its no interactive state It is anexcellent medium for learners to practice comprehension skills and also acquirebackground cultural knowledge (Sherrington, 1973)

Trang 16

Thus, students need to have strategies and methods to learn Englishvocabulary to suit their learning and working time, and almost all vocabularymust be in long-term memory.

O, Malley, and Chamot (1990:1) defined learning strategies as “thespecial thoughts of behaviors that individuals use to help them comprehend, learn, or retain new information” This very broad definition is echoed bySchmitt in defining vocabulary learning strategies Citing in Robin (1987)Schmitt says learning is the “process by which information is obtained, stored, retrieved and used… Therefore vocabulary learning strategies could be anywhich affect this broadly defined process” (1997:203) This definition leavesopen to question whether vocabulary learning is incidental or deliberate afactor that has been much debated in the literature In his definition, Nation(2001:217) makes clear the intentional character of vocabulary learning and, interestingly, bases his description on the qualities a strategy must possess inorder to warrant attention from a teacher According to Nation a strategy must:

1 Involve choice, that is, there are several strategies to choose from

2 Be complex, that is, there are several steps to learn

3 Require knowledge and benefit from training

4 Increase the efficiency of vocabulary learning

According to Wallace (1992), the authentic context has been defined as

“real life texts not written for pedagogic purposes” Many researchers likeSynder and Colon (1988) found that it is one of the good means to exposestudents to authentic language use in context “TV offers visual and audio clues

to meaning The learner just hears the language but sees the context in which it

is used

According to Paul (2000), we learn new words as we hear the wordsfrom the context of sentences and use the linguistic context to figure out whatthey mean It also explains why children can learn a thousand words in a year

It is only possible through the linguistic context (Sternberg, 1987) Similarly, it

is easier for the foreign language learner to acquire vocabulary through the

Trang 17

Paul Nation and James Coady proposed a strategy for developingguessing skills that students must learn and use to infer the meaning ofunknown words in a reading passage Suberviola also pointed out the steps ofthis strategy in her article.

This strategy consists of five steps:

(a) Finding the part of speech of the unknown word

(b) Looking at the immediate context of the unknown word andsimplifying this context if necessary

(c) Looking at the wider context of the unknown word This meanslooking at the relationship between the clause containing the unknown wordand surrounding clauses and sentences

(d) Guessing the meaning of the unknown word

(e) Checking that the guess is correct

(Suberviola, 2002:240)

In the process of reading, learners will see many unfamiliar words.Trying to guess the meaning of the words is a good method for learners Nationargues that “because of the large number of low-frequency words and because

of their infrequent occurrence and narrow range, it is best to teach learnersstrategies for dealing with these words rather than to teach the wordsthemselves (Nation, 2001: 159) As the amount of vocabulary is huge, it isimpossible for a learner to know all the words of a language It is said that “thegood language learner is a willing and accurate guesser” (Rubin, 1975: 84) Agood learner should have the ability to guess the meaning of unknown wordsbased on the context

Sternberg also argued that “most vocabulary is learned from context”(Sternberg, 1987:89)

Webb and Rogers (2009:34) observed that “the combination of visualimagery and aural input may make it easier to learn words incidentally throughwatching television programs than through reading”

Some research has attempted to focus on the role of vocabulary in listening

Trang 18

There was a claim that vocabulary knowledge is the main obstacle tocompetence in listening comprehension for second language learners (Kelly,1991) This was clarified by McCarthy (2000) who found that the lack ofgrammatical knowledge and vocabulary, as well as word recognition skills, may result in ineffective listening comprehension.

Thus, learning English vocabulary is very important, but findingstrategies and methods of learning vocabulary is even more important, but theimportant part depends on each student's self-consciousness to alwaysinnovating strategies and methods and applying them to learning Englishvocabulary effectively

1.2.3 Previous study

Regarding the research on English learning methods so far, there havebeen quite a few studies on English vocabulary learning methods And alsoclose to the topic that I am researching, but from the point of view there aresome research works of other authors such as:

1 The study “Incidental vocabulary learning through viewing TV” Michael P H Rogers and Stuart Webb.

-In the article “-Incidental vocabulary learning through viewing TV”Michael P H Rogers and Stuart Webb suggested the main aim of their studywas to test the extent to which watching multiple episodes of a TV show canlearn vocabulary incidentally And to find out if is it effective when watching

TV shows, Michael P H Rogers and Stuart Webb gave students a test at theiruniversity by having them watch a TV series over a period of time And thisstudy shows that “Incidental vocabulary learning through viewing TV” is reallyeffective when students can learn new vocabulary from the drama

2 The study “Deliberate Vocabulary Learning from Word Cards” Darrell Wilkinson.

-In the article “Deliberate Vocabulary Learning from Word Cards” byDarrell Wilkinson, the author researched learning English vocabulary fromWord Cards Word Cards are most similar to the traditional learning method,

Trang 19

learn Then word cards have full pronunciation, classification of words, andmeanings of words And Darrell Wilkinson did surveys on students learningvocabulary through Word Cards Finally, this method gave very positive resultsthat students can increase their vocabulary by learning Word Cards with paper

or right on the app

3 The study “Using the Internet and Learning English vocabulary” Fereshteh Torabi.

-The article “Using the Internet and Learning English vocabulary”suggested the development of the Internet today and since then, learningEnglish has also had a new step, when in addition to learning traditionallythrough books, thanks to the Internet, students can learn English through usefulwebsites and since then, students' ability to learn English has improvedmarkedly Fereshteh Torabi has said that the increasingly strong development

of the Internet, has also had an impact on education when students can easilylearn new knowledge, especially new languages because there are free usefullearning websites So, students can take the initiative in their study time at anytime and anywhere

4 The study “Vocabulary Learning Promotion through English Subtitled Cartoons” - Mahdiyeh Seyed Beheshti Nasab and Seyyed Fariborz Pishdadi Motlagh.

In the article “Vocabulary Learning Promotion through EnglishSubtitled Cartoons” Mahdiyeh Seyed Beheshti Nasab and Seyyed FariborzPishdadi Motlagh suggested learning English through watching cartoons.Mahdiyeh Seyed Beheshti Nasab and Seyyed Fariborz Pishdadi Motlagh did asurvey when divided into two groups to do research One group watchedcartoons with subtitles and one group watched cartoons without subtitles Fromthere, these two surveys will show which group will learn more vocabulary and

be more interested And the results of the authors' research showed that thegroup that watched cartoons with subtitles had a marked improvement inEnglish vocabulary

Trang 20

5 The study “Investigating challenges for learning english through songs”

- Nurhidayah Muhamad, Noor Hanim Rahmat.

In the article “Investigating challenges for learning english throughsongs” Nurhidayah Muhamad, Noor Hanim Rahmat suggested the method oflearning English through songs It is mentioned that English teaching mustalways be renewed through generations, and this is also the challenge forteachers when they have to always find out and come up with learning methodsthat can both acquire knowledge and be entertained Nurhidayah Muhamad andNoor Hanim Rahmat have studied the application of learning English bylearning through songs A method of learning that is casual and new but alsochallenging for teachers who will question whether this method really works ornot The authors have pointed out the effectiveness of learning this method, students can improve their listening and pronunciation skills, and thenunderstand the meaning of the lyrics This shows that learning English throughsongs is effective

Trang 21

CHAPTER 2: THE STUDY 2.1 Research design

This study was conducted with the research of an online surveyquestionnaire and online interview using Google form for English Linguisticstudents at Khanh Hoa University This online survey and interview surveymethod will find out the current situation of students' English vocabularylearning The online survey and interview methods are divided to easily surveyand grasp the current situation of students' English vocabulary learning Afterthat, the research will use Data collection and Data analysis after completingthe survey Thereby, it is possible to summarize the results of students'vocabulary learning situations and English vocabulary learning methods thatstudents want to learn and apply

2.2 Participants and purposes of the survey questionnaire

Research subjects are students from the age of 20 who are currentlystudying English at Khanh Hoa University and are still studying at the school. The English learning level of the students is from B2 to C1 and are thesophomore, junior and senior students These subjects are all students whohave been learning English Linguistics, but there are still students who are stillvery confused when learning English for majors

2.2.1 Participants of the survey questionnaire

Participants of the survey questionnaire in the study are students ofEnglish Linguistics at Khanh Hoa University, including courses 3, 4, and 5.This study aims to find out about the current situation of English vocabularylearning of students, thereby proposing innovative English vocabulary learningmethods to improve student’s English learning ability Participants of thesurvey questionnaire are English Linguistic students at Khanh Hoa University, who are still studying at the school and the English learning level of thestudents is from B2 to C1

After students took a survey about the situation of learning Englishvocabulary as well as their opinions about the difficulties when they learnEnglish Through the survey results, it can be seen that there are students whoare confident in their ability to learn new words but there are also studentshaving opposite thought that they find it difficult to learning vocabulary

When students have chosen the English Linguistic major, it means thatthey have a love and passion for learning English However, when students join

a professional English learning environment, it is good for students who cankeep up with the progress of their specialized English studies On the contrary,

Trang 23

stressed and easily bored So, through students' survey results about learningEnglish vocabulary and whether their current English learning situation is good, students would be divided into two categories based on the number of studentsparticipating in the survey and their given opinions Students are divided intothe following two participants for the survey:

The first is excellent and good students: These students learn English

vocabulary very quickly and remember vocabulary very well The survey given

to these students is to see what methods students who are quite good at Englishlearn English well

The second is students are not confident in English: these students

have difficulty using English in class They lack confidence in English becausethey do not have enough English vocabulary for themselves to use their Englishconfidently, then they are confused when they have to answer in English, thesurvey for these students is how their current learning situation is and whatmethod of learning English vocabulary they want to learn

1 The group of participants answering survey questions:

The first is the students of English Linguistics at Khanh Hoa University, including courses 3, 4, and 5

The reason for choosing English Linguistics students in courses 3, 4,and 5 is because these are students who are currently studying specializedEnglish, which means that almost all of them have to use English in class up to90% Surveying these students will easily find out more about their Englishlearning situation And it's easy to see what percentage of students areconfident with their English vocabulary

CHAPTER 3: SUGGESTIONS FOR INNOVATIVE METHODS OF LEARNING ENGLISH VOCABULARY FOR STUDENTS.

3.1 Learning vocabulary by using word cards

Word cards, also known as flashcards, are a form of learning consisting

of many small-sized cards put together like a small notebook and it’s handyand easy to carry to take anywhere when you want to learn English The front

of the card will write new vocabulary, phonetic symbols, and type words, thebackside will write the meaning of that word in English or Vietnamese

The method of learning English vocabulary by word cards is probablyone of the traditional methods of learning vocabulary Just like the waystudents often want to learn a new English word, they will write it in anotebook But why does learning with word cards bring better results inlearning English vocabulary?

Firstly, word cards have a very clear arrangement of topics, helpinglearners to focus on learning new vocabulary related to that topic For example,

if you want to learn words about weather topics, word cards will include wordsrelated to weather (clouds, wind, sunshine, rain, ) And, depending on learner

or teacher preferences, other information such as part of speech, collocations, pronunciation information, or example sentences can also be included on thecards (Folse, 2004; Hulstijn, 2001; Nation, 2013; Nation & Webb, 2011) Infact, word cards can help learners achieve effective English vocabularylearning, as they can provide learners with other synonyms, collocation, pronunciation, and so on, thus making it easier for them to access newvocabulary

Trang 31

Secondly, why word cards are almost a method of learning that is neverout of date In the past, word cards were only known to be learned throughsmall pieces of paper Nowadays, with the development of technology 4.0,word cards have also equipped it with a more modern version to catch up withtechnology trends, that is learning English by smartphone, or in other wordsword cards have a learning application that allows learners to easily download

it to their phones It can be said that Quizlet is one of the applications to learnEnglish vocabulary by word cards method

Thirdly, in order for learners to master the thousands of words needed tobecome competent in a foreign language, most researchers now recommend acombination of both deliberate and incidental techniques (Folse, 2004, 2011;Laufer, 2003; Nation, 2013; Schmitt, 2008) So, word cards have flexibilitywhen it comes to learning while combining scientific learning and incidentallearning

3.2 Learning vocabulary through watching TV shows, and movies, listening to music.

It can’t deny that most people enjoy and like watching movies, TVshows, listening to music a lot because these programs provide relaxation andentertainment and most viewers will naturally learn vocabulary in a veryincidental and even remember it for a long time the meaning of the word andthe pronunciation and how to use of that word

Firstly, according to research suggested that L2 learners spend muchmore time watching L2 television outside of the classroom than they do readingL2 texts (Lindgren & Muñoz, 2013; Peters, 2018) This is a method that mostEnglish vocabulary learners probably won't recognize as a method Becausethis is a way to learn English vocabulary and memorize vocabulary in a veryincidental way and it is extremely effective

Secondly, this is a way to learn English vocabulary learned in anincidental way rather than in a scientific and organized way like word cards.Word cards learn vocabulary by topic, while learning English vocabularythrough movies, and TV shows, listening to music, we often see that English

Trang 32

vocabulary often debates focusing on many topics in the movies, songs, or TVshows And more than that, it helps viewers, and listeners accidentally learnnew vocabulary, the pronunciation of that word, and the speaker's tone of voice.

Thirdly, according to Paul (2000), we learn new words as we hear thewords from the context of sentences and use the linguistic context to figure outwhat they mean It also explains why children can learn a thousand of words in

a year It is only possible through the linguistic context (Sternberg, 1987).Similarly, it is easier for a foreign language learner to acquire vocabularythrough the process of guessing meaning from the context, in this sense, TVnews serve as a favorable factor Therefore, this is probably a vocabularylearning method that can be applied in class and at home Lecturers can let theirstudents dub a cartoon or a movie so that students can practice pronouncingvocabulary, tone, and memorizing the movie's content

To demonstrate the method of learning English vocabulary through TVshows, or movies, listening to music in randomly but also scientifically In thestudy by Michael P H Rogers and Stuart Webb on learning Englishvocabulary through watching TV After they took tests to test the effectiveness

of English vocabulary by watching TV, Rogers and Webb found that thestudents who took their test were able to learn and remember new wordsthrough watching the movie that they have made available before Butthroughout the episodes of that series, they found that if certain words had afrequency or continued to appear in the episodes, the students would rememberthem longer, as for the words that appear rarely, the students often forget ordon't remember clearly But the effect is also very positive when they realizethat there are words that can be used in different contexts and have differentmeanings, so students can easily learn more and expand their knowledge Andthose results also showed Rogers and Webb evidence that incidentalvocabulary learning from television can be equivalent to incidental learningfrom reading So they found that watching TV could be a more effectivemethod of learning incidental vocabulary

Trang 33

Another study on learning English vocabulary by watching cartoons ormovies with subtitles by Mahdiyeh Seyed Beheshti Nasab and Seyyed FariborzPishdadi Motlagh They gave students two tests and divided them into twogroups, one group will watch cartoons with subtitles, and the other will watchcartoons without subtitles As a result, the students were able to learn andmemorize new words randomly very effectively And watching cartoons withsubtitles is even more effective in learning vocabulary, when students have justlearned vocabulary with special images of animation, there are also subtitles towatch movies, helping students to follow the full content of the movie, listen towhat the characters are saying and which words are pronouncing So that, students understand vocabulary and learning new vocabulary is easy and nottoo difficult The two authors who researched learning English vocabularythrough movies with subtitles also said learning English vocabulary throughmovies with subtitles like this will help students expand their knowledge indifferent topics, not too restrictive, but comfortable watching movies andlearning.

Another research by Nurhidayah Muhamad and Noor Hanim Rahmatthestudy of learning English through songs, and applying this way of learning inthe classroom of teachers is a step change and a big challenge, but it bringspositive effects if learners know how to apply it properly In their research, theauthors suggest how learning English through songs helps students practicelistening and speaking skills And the authors also emphasize that withoutlistening skills, the ability to communicate will not exist

They also mentioned the common psychology of many students whenthey are afraid to practice listening skills because they are confused when they

Trang 34

do not fully understand what the dialogues in the listening passages say, moreover, sometimes students also feel boring to practice listening skills, sothe authors feel that if in class they can let them listen to a certain song, it will

be more fun and less boring because music has good sound and help studentsreduce stress

The author also believed that there are songs that students can remembervery clearly and for a long time with the rhythm, pronunciation, and lyrics.Nurhidayah Muhamad and Noor Hanim Rahmatthe have demonstrated theresearch of Abbas & Mohammad Reza (2011), listening skill is one of the mostimportant skills in communication, when it accounts for 40-50%, speaking skillaccounts for 25-30%, reading skills accounted for 11-16% and finally writingskills accounted for 9%

And one of the ways to improve the ability to learn English vocabulary

is to apply the method of learning English vocabulary through songs becausewhen students listen to a certain song, they will try to listen to the lyrics, therhythm and then they automatically sing along and pronounce the words in thelyrics exactly like the singer is singing

It is also easy to understand why students are interested in learningvocabulary through lyrics, because of the catchy rhythm, beautiful lyrics, andmost of all, they also learn new vocabulary randomly without feeling toopressured when learning English

3.3 Learning vocabulary by using apps learning English

Students often find useful apps to download to their to learn English, butthere are too many English learning apps that make students sometimesconfused as to which one to choose and suitable for them, or maybe students

Trang 35

download and only learn 1-2 days then they will forget the English learningapp in their phone So, students of English Linguistic should choose whichEnglish learning app is useful for themselves.

Firstly, with the 4.0 technology era, almost everyone has a smartphone, and downloading an app to learn English is very easy

Secondly, the method of learning English through apps sounds verygood, but it is difficult to be effective because this method requires theawareness and desire to improve English from the learners themselves. Therefore, to apply this learning method, students need to be motivated andmotivated by the lecturer Students of English Linguistics at Khanh HoaUniversity often actively find apps to learn English vocabulary by themselves, but their initiative is not enough

Some useful English learning apps for students such as Duolingo, AppCake, Elsa Speak,

DUOLINGO is a foreign language learning app with many differentlanguages such as English, Korean, Japanese, Spanish, etc This is anapplication many learners download a lot because of its applicability andusefulness, when students choose to learn English or any other language, theapplication will ask learners what the purpose that they want to learn English orother languages, what is their current level and there has a small test to testthem, then the app will ask how many minutes learners want to learn English

Trang 36

And when learning, learners will learn a lot of different topics and how to usecorrect vocabulary and grammar The great thing is that Duolingo will remindyou to learn English if you forget.

APP CAKE is a video communication English learning application, withvery interesting English learning features that make it easier for students toaccess new English vocabulary, pronunciation, and tone as well as the context

in which English words should be used Video lessons are extremely rich withdifferent topics and students also can choose or search for keywords on anytopic they want to learn

Trang 37

ELSA SPEAK the name English Language Speech Assistant, this is anapplication to learn to speak and communicate in English, it could helpstudents correct pronunciation errors, and students can practice speakingEnglish like a native And this is an extremely useful online English learningapplication, when students download and use it, Elsa will give them a test tocheck their ability, then it will automatically arrange a separate learning routefor each person, when learning vocabulary, this application has a feature todetect and correct mispronunciation errors details for learners Elsa also has adetailed speaking skill scoring feature, making it easy for learners to assess andknow their abilities At the same time, Elsa also helps learners to memorizevocabulary by going through each lesson Elsa will check learners' vocabularyand save the vocabulary that learners have conquered and memorized well.Elsa also reminds learners to go to the English learning app every day at acertain time frame if learners forget, helping learners to form a habit of learningEnglish every day.

3.4 Learning vocabulary through useful website learning English.

Nowadays with the 4.0 technology era, there are so many Englishlearning websites appearing all over social networking sites, especially onFacebook because Facebook is a platform with a huge number of users, soEnglish learning websites are very easily accessible to students who are usingthis social networking But there are too many English learning websites andstudents just click on that website and don't pay attention, so the student need

Trang 38

to find and learn English on websites that make them feel interesting and want

to improve their English

In Fereshteh Torabi's research about learning English vocabulary byusing the Internet to access websites or blogs to learn English very effectively.Fereshteh Torabi said that with the era of strong technology development,English learning has been more or less affected by the Internet Because theInternet is like a big library with a lot of information, quick access, and isextremely convenient, so many students have learned English vocabulary onuseful websites or blogs Therefore, free and paid English learning websites orblogs are growing more and more, and students can choose useful learningwebsites for themselves They easily find out which websites are useful forthemselves, so learning English vocabulary was not too difficult when thewebsite still kept the lessons and had exercises to practice memorizing thevocabulary and there are short videos where teachers will use English wordsclearly Thus, it is easier for students to expand their knowledge of usingEnglish vocabulary by each topic and situation

Currently, with many websites and free English learning channels on theInternet, students can freely learn and choose which website they feel isappropriate and interesting Youtube is a platform that owns a wealth of richand diverse content, in which the free English learning channel is also verypopular on youtube As mentioned above, according to the research of authorFereshteh Torabi in the study "Using the Internet and Learning Englishvocabulary", with the great development of modern technology, education willoften combine with technology to bring beneficial effects to students andlecturers Students these days often a smartphone with them “side by side”,because the smartphone has advantages that bring students a lot ofconveniences Such as if students do not understand the meaning of vocabulary, there is an online dictionary on the phone, students want to learn more Englishknowledge, the smartphone can also meet it, and to grasp that, the free onlineteaching channels on Youtube are increasing day by day It can be said that

Trang 39

such as Hana Lexis, Vyvocab, Ted-Ed, Face off Ielts , I'm Mary, Amomama(AniMatters),…

HANA LEXIS channel is an English learning channel from a girl who

used to study English and IELTS for many years, she has videos on how tomemorize vocabulary and how to pronounce it At the same time, these Englishvocabulary learning videos from Hana are copious, from learning vocabularythrough English songs to how to translate Vietnamese songs into English. Therefore, many young people feel extremely interested, because Hana'schannel is close, relaxing, studying, and entertaining

VYVOCAB channel is a channel about learning English from Vy, she is

quite famous in Vietnam Vy’s videos posted are all related to learning Englishvocabulary, with just enough learning time, not too long, but enough forEnglish learners to easily learn and remember more about vocabulary, AndEnglish vocabulary learning topics are extremely diverse and quite new, soVy's channel also receives a lot of young people watching and learning

Trang 40

TED ED is a channel to discover knowledge through watching

educational and entertaining videos in English language TED ED stands forTechnology - Entertainment - Design, the videos from this channel areextremely rich and diverse, Ted ed channel invites speakers who are all leaders

in their fields, they are professors, entrepreneurs and also successful people inlife They are invited to share their experiences, stories and lessons they havegone through, to impart knowledge about life to the listeners, especially youngpeople This is an extremely useful English learning channel for Englishlearners, because this channel has a lot of diverse topics, so the vocabulary ineach video in this channel is also very rich in many different fields

FACE OFF IELTS is an inspirational learning channel to learn English

and high education This is a really useful English learning channel in Vietnam, the program is often shown on Youtube or VTV, FACE OFF IELTS has a veryprofessional and experienced MC team as well as their English learningachievements are very respectable, the guests are also very confident in theirEnglish to join the MC to share their English learning experiences Face OffIeltschannel is also very psychological when it comes to Vietnamese subtitlesfor viewers who can both listen to English and watch Vietnamese subtitles tounderstand the content of the dialogues and easily learn new vocabulary
