INTRODUCTION

Rationale of the study

Project-based learning is an effective educational approach that involves students collaborating on a project to produce a tangible outcome, such as a product or presentation This active teaching method enhances learners' skills and fosters creativity by allowing them to apply knowledge in practical situations Projects can be organized as individual, pair, or group tasks, promoting teamwork and initiative among students By working in groups, students experience increased cooperation and support, which boosts their confidence in communication and encourages broader participation in class Ultimately, project-based learning cultivates a spirit of self-study and creativity among learners.

The pilot English program (English 10-year system) distinguishes itself by incorporating a project at the end of each unit, emphasizing project-based learning This student-centered approach encourages learners to engage in problem-solving by taking on various roles, simulating real-life activities within society Such experiential learning makes the educational process more meaningful, helping students understand the relevance of their knowledge and skills.

Many students struggle with their projects and presentations, hindering the effectiveness of PROJECT lessons The development of essential life and study skills is crucial With targeted teaching methods, students' projects show continuous improvement, fostering active collaboration within groups Each group eagerly presents their work, and peer evaluations based on teacher-defined criteria enhance the learning experience This lively classroom atmosphere encourages creativity, dynamism, and a positive attitude towards the subject Consequently, I have chosen to explore “Some effective measures to design activities that help students develop valuable skills through PROJECT lessons (TIẾNG ANH 10).”

Aims of the study

Engaging in these activities equips students to excel in their PROJECT lessons, fostering essential skills such as teamwork, communication, presentation, and particularly proficiency in English.

Research duty

In the project lesson study, the teacher's responsibility is to adequately prepare students for a positive mindset and readiness It is essential to avoid pressuring students while encouraging their active participation in assigned activities, ultimately leading to successful outcomes during their presentations in the project lessons.

Research subjects and scope

The main subjects of this study are grade 10 students and the ideas today are the suitable and simple methods for each specific project lesson ( from Unit 1 to Unit

Research method

- Encourage and guide students to participate in practical activities, experience activities, do projects and write presentations…

- Promote the active and creative role of students

- Orientation for learners: Learners are involved in all stages of the teaching process, including the topic identification stage; The teacher's role is to guide them

- Action-oriented: Learners perform learning tasks of a practical nature

- Integrated nature: Students are divided into groups, each group solves a task related to implementing the common topic of the whole class

- Expand learners' interests, interests, and experiences

THE RESEASCH CONTENT

Theoretical background

Teaching through large projects or exercises can be defined in various ways, each highlighting different aspects According to Carter and Thomas (1986), effective learning in this context requires three essential conditions: a problem to solve, self-control, and collaboration among members, which reflects an interdisciplinary approach and promotes learner autonomy To meet these conditions, major projects should occur outside the classroom, align with the course curriculum, and allow learners to establish their own plans and goals for successful completion.

Project-based learning is increasingly adopted by schools due to its numerous advantages This teaching method fosters the development of critical thinking and awareness by emphasizing hands-on practice, allowing students to gain knowledge from real-world experiences It enhances student initiative, as learners become the central figures in problem-solving, taking charge of planning, goal-setting, and project execution, while teachers provide guidance and support Unlike traditional learning, project-based methods empower students to select topics that align with their interests and abilities, stimulating creativity and engagement in learning activities Additionally, this approach cultivates perseverance and self-discipline, as students must be self-reliant and actively involved throughout the project process Ultimately, project-based learning promotes cooperation, listening, and sharing among students, fostering a sense of responsibility as they collaborate in group work.

Practical background

Dien Chau 2 High School employs 10 English teachers and, starting from the 2022-2023 school year, has implemented the "Global Success" textbook program for 10th graders, as directed by the Nghe An Department of Education and Training To qualify for this program, students must pass an English proficiency test that assesses their Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing skills, achieving a score above average Each class consists of 40 to 43 students, with the study conducted on 120 students from grades 10 A5, 10 A6, and 10 C6 during the 2022-2023 academic year.

The foreign language subject presents both challenges and new experiences for students, particularly those from rural areas with limited exposure to foreign languages, resulting in a lack of enthusiasm for the subject Despite the active motivation of many participants in this study, they face significant limitations in their report writing and presentation skills in English Prior to implementing effective teaching methods, many groups struggled to adequately prepare for their projects and presentations, leading to failures in some PROJECT lessons The teacher's assistance in designing engaging activities can significantly enhance students' chances of success during PROJECT periods.

As the new school year approaches, all English teachers have received training on the 2018 general education program and various teaching methods A key highlight is the introduction of project-based lessons, allowing nearly three weeks for students to prepare their projects and presentations from the start of the term This timeframe is beneficial for both teachers and students to develop and implement effective solutions for their projects Consequently, I have decided to explore the topic: “Some effective ways to design activities that help students develop valuable skills through PROJECT lessons (TIẾNG ANH 10).”

The research methods

* Stages of organizing project-based teaching:

The first is to prepare, at this stage teachers need:

Idea generation: Learn and create practical problems that students need to solve Selection of topics and sub-topics: Select one of the discovered problems for the project

When creating a learning task plan, it is essential to outline the specific tasks to be completed, estimate the required time, identify necessary materials, allocate funding, and determine the methods for conducting and assigning work within the group.

Next, the project implementation phase should include:

Information collection: Information collection and processing of information obtained

Conduct investigation: Theoretical knowledge, problem solving options are tested through practice

At the conclusion of the project, students will showcase their findings, with teachers evaluating them based on established criteria The class will be divided into four groups, each responsible for tasks such as preparing materials, engaging in practical and experiential activities, completing projects, and writing presentations.

- prepare direction and design content of PROJECT lessons at the end of the first period “ Getting Started” of each Unit

- assign specific tasks to each group, each student has specific things to do to prepare for the presentation

- guide groups to make clips, posters, search or take pictures to suit each topic

- ask students to discuss to divide tasks to team members participating in PROJECT exercises

- guide the groups to write the presentations before they send to teacher for feedback

- collect the writing drafts of each group to help them edit their presentations, pictures, video clips suitably

- encourage groups to create plays or have the real experiences relating to their projects and make reports by clips, pictures…

- guide the groups to present their projects according to 4 parts: warm – up/ pre- speaking/ while- speaking/ post- speaking

- encourage each group to appoint 2 main speakers in each Project lesson, so that all students can get marks after 5 PROJECT lessons

- stimulate them to actively participate in the projects so that they can achieve good results as the outcome of the project is assessed by a regular test score

3.2 Specific methods in some project

Each PROJECT lesson is unique and appealing, with its complexity largely influenced by the teacher's guidance Through various successful and unsuccessful PROJECT lessons, I have developed strategies to enhance student engagement and effectiveness In every lesson, each group is responsible for presenting their project results as per the teacher's instructions, with two speakers assigned to present on a chosen topic.

The presentation will have 4 main parts Each speaker will present 2 parts

+ introduce the members of their groups through pictures, videos…

+ use video clips, pictures, power points to lead in their Topic of each group’s presentation

+ give the main contents of their presentations through video clips, pictures, power points which they have prepared

- Post- speaking give the meaning of the project and your feeling…

3.3 Some teacher’s guidance and students’ activities to prepare for the project lessons in some Units of Tiếng Anh 10- global success

3.3.1 The teacher’s guidance for the first topic

+ Teacher divides duties for all the groups

- Group 1: do the research on FAMILY DAY in Vietnam

- Group 2: do the research on FAMILY DAY in England

- Group 3: do the research on FAMILY DAY in Korea

- Group 4: do the research on FAMILY DAY in America

+ introduce the members of their groups through pictures, videos…

+ use video clips, pictures, power points to lead in their Topic of each group’s presentation

+ video clips, pictures, symbols of the celebration

+ give the aims/ time/ places/and activities of the celebration

+ give the meaning of the project and their feeling…

Family Day is celebrated in various countries, including Vietnam, England, America, and Korea, each with its unique history, significance, and activities This day emphasizes the importance of family bonding and togetherness, highlighting cultural traditions and values associated with family life in each nation Activities may vary, reflecting local customs and the purpose of strengthening family ties.

Find beautiful and appropriate pictures of meaningful and authentic family day activities and send them to the teacher to choose the most suitable ones

Create engaging PowerPoint presentations or video clips by incorporating images and summarizing the group's ideas for a demonstration lasting 5 to 7 minutes Each group should select two main speakers to present their project effectively.

- Representative 1: Introduce yourself and your team members through prepared slices and your group's presentation topic (Warm-up) Then continue with the section

“Post-speaking” to talk about your feelings, the meaning and value of family happiness

- Representative 2 : present the main content of the topic (Pre-speaking and

While-speaking) so that the audience can clearly understand the time, purpose and positive activities of family day in some countries around the world

In the initial lesson of the project, students often lack experience in crafting and delivering presentations Therefore, it is essential for teachers to provide guidance, including sample articles and structured suggestions that outline the key components: Warm-up, Pre-speaking, and While-speaking activities.

In topic 2, the teacher refrains from providing specific guidance on presentations, instead focusing on orienting students to foster their autonomy and creativity in learning activities This approach encourages students to take responsibility for their learning, engage in self-discovery, and develop essential skills through exploration and innovation.

All designated groups are required to engage in practical activities that promote green living, such as cleaning, organizing, growing vegetables, and watering plants, in their residential and educational areas These efforts aim to enhance the surrounding environment, making it greener, cleaner, more beautiful, and healthier.

Take real pictures of what you've done and the results you've achieved to demonstrate your group's project exercise

Use the best and most meaningful images to create a power point and write a presentation recounting the activities the group has done

Discuss together to write a presentation about your Project according to the structure instructed by the teacher

- Group 4: talk about some English pop songs and express some pop songs you like

Various groups utilize the internet to explore the history of traditional music genres, discover popular songs, and learn about renowned singers They practice singing folk and English songs, which they then perform during project lessons.

In the Pre- speaking, singer from a group should demonstrate your talent by singing a folk song to create a good atmosphere for the Project lesson Then continuing with the presentation

In the While- speaking, each group search for some video clips, images to make power points to present about your group’s topic

Traditional music has deep historical roots, often reflecting the cultural heritage of its time and place of origin Key instruments such as the lute, flute, and drums play a vital role in creating its unique sound Renowned musicians and singers, like [insert well-known names], have significantly contributed to the evolution of this genre, enriching its vocabulary and expanding its influence Understanding these elements enhances appreciation for traditional music and its enduring legacy.

In the Post- speaking, students have to the reasons why the audiences like this kind of music and why we like listening to music

(ex: Music is a wonderful entertainment which make us happy and relax The traditional music often praises the love of the homeland, the love of the couple, which

3.3.6 The students’ activities to prepare for the Unit 3 from some classes

Encourage students to select a volunteer project that addresses the needs of their local community or village Additionally, they can create a video clip showcasing their volunteer efforts to enhance their presentation.

+ helping children to study the simple English ( group with students good at English)

+ prepare some charity meals for the patients in the hospital through the fun raising + visiting the families of martyrs and invalids…

Allow groups to choose a volunteer project they like best to help poor people in their village or hometown

Students can engage in practical activities that allow them to make a meaningful contribution to those facing hardships This involvement not only helps those in need but also fosters confidence and positive energy in the students, enabling them to lead happier lives.

All groups need to save pictures of your activities to make power points and write the presentation about what you have done

- Helping children study some simple subjects such as: English, mathematics,…

- Visiting some families of martyrs and invalids, disaster victims…

- Donate books and clothes to give to children in remote and mountainous areas

In the While- speaking, and introduce about their volunteer work by answering the questions:

- What do you do to help them?

In the Post- speaking, you have to the reasons why you do this Project

- What do you feel after you meet and help them?

- What did the actual experience leave you with?

Engaging in volunteer activities allows us to recognize our own privileges and the struggles faced by those less fortunate Many individuals live in poverty and despair, highlighting the importance of extending our compassion and support By contributing our time and resources, we not only uplift those in need but also enrich our own lives, fostering a deeper sense of purpose and fulfillment.

Groups enhance their presentations through various methods, including theatrical performances and role-playing, to create engaging discussions that effectively convey the project's main objectives and highlight useful learning applications.

Ask students find out the names and symbols of the best Apps, their uses… for studying English, mathematics, nature science subjects, social science subjects…

Last Sunday, our group had a trip to Phùng Chí Kiên historical site in Diễn Yên

Our English teacher, Mrs Hanh, joined us for our first visit to this beautiful location, which is situated near a picturesque field, creating an exciting atmosphere for everyone involved.

Firstly, we took some photos as a souvenir and prayed for the best wishes

We finished work in one hour Then we took a short tour around the site to see the sights

The recently cleaned landscapes of the historical site are now pristine, lush, and tranquil This serene environment evokes feelings of joy and gratitude towards our national heroes, whose dedication and sacrifices have paved the way for the peaceful and fulfilling lives we enjoy today.
