English serves as the primary language for nearly 100 countries, playing a crucial role in global communication and integration It is essential for various fields, including science, business, and tourism, facilitating opportunities for learning and collaboration not only in Vietnam but worldwide As Vietnam becomes a member of the World Trade Organization and undergoes transformation during the Industrial Revolution 4.0, the demand for high-quality human resources is increasing English is a vital tool for accessing and understanding these opportunities Consequently, the need for training and development in foreign languages, particularly English, is rising in Vietnam However, despite the focus on foreign language training at the school level, the results have not yet met the required standards The objectives set out in the project "Teaching and Learning Foreign Languages in the National Education System for the Period of 2008 - 2020" have significantly impacted language education, but there remains a considerable gap between objectives and actual outcomes.

To effectively learn a language, students require a relaxed atmosphere that enhances motivation, which can be achieved through games Utilizing games in teaching not only aids students in improving their language skills but also boosts their motivation, rapport, cooperation, and social interaction On one hand, playing games helps students develop language proficiency, and this improved language ability fosters self-confidence, enabling them to express themselves in their future lives.
The game is highly beneficial for enhancing motivation among students who struggle to express their feelings or thoughts in front of others By engaging in the game, students can become more active, self-reliant, and energized in their studies about the environment and the world they live in, while also participating in the teaching and learning process We can teach all skills and components through game play, based on a learner-centered approach, while ensuring we pay attention to the meaning, relevance, and level of learners (Widodo, 2006).
At Aƚ Tгaп Һuпǥ Da0 ҺiǥҺ SເҺ00l, students primarily reside in mountainous areas with challenging conditions, which limits their access to English communication resources and opportunities to learn foreign languages Most students possess a moderate level of learning but face restricted access to educational materials and outside knowledge Additionally, as foreign language teachers, researchers have been innovating and diversifying teaching methods to create the most comfortable atmosphere possible for students to engage with the foreign languages they are learning.
Teaching English in most Vietnamese public schools primarily focuses on tasks and exercises from the textbook, resulting in a lack of essential activities such as active discovery, analysis, interpretation, problem-solving, memory, and physical activities This approach leads to boredom and makes motivation difficult for students.

Motivation, as defined by Gardner (1985), is a goal-directed factor that encompasses four aspects: a goal, effortful behavior, a desire to reach the goal, and favorable attitudes toward achievement It serves as the starting point for learning and supports the process of foreign language acquisition A lack of motivation can hinder students from continuing their journey toward achieving language proficiency, while high motivation is essential for learners to attain proper proficiency in a second language, even if their abilities or learning conditions are not ideal.
Motivation has been recognized as a remarkable factor in language learning success Research on motivation has evolved over the years, demonstrating a gradual integration with developments in motivational psychology, while maintaining a clear focus on aspects related to language learning (Ushioda & Dörnyei, 2012) Harmer (2002) noted that motivation is a type of initiative that encourages individuals to take action towards achieving a goal This is fundamental for success in most learning fields; without motivation, learners struggle to make the effort required to learn Understanding the role of motivation is essential when learning a language The author distinguishes between extrinsic and intrinsic motivation, highlighting their respective influences on the individual Brown (2001) states that intrinsic motivation is one of the key aspects that helps students succeed in language learning While other factors also contribute to language learning success, providing learners with opportunities in the classroom to practice the language is crucial, reducing reliance on external influences.

University and master's theses emphasize the importance of language for personal development By becoming proficient, individuals can enhance their competencies and autonomy in language learning Research has shown that intrinsic motivation plays a crucial role in fostering success Furthermore, a model of intrinsic motivation proposed by Vallerand highlights its significance in educational contexts.
In 1997, it was discovered that intrinsic motivation is linked to knowledge, achievement, and stimulation These three aspects are associated with exploring new ideas and developing knowledge, where sensations are engaged in attempting to master a task or achieve a goal, and sensations are stimulated by performing the task This type of motivation is referred to as extrinsic motivation, which involves students entering the classroom from outside (Harmer, 2007).
Motivation is the driving force that enables humans to achieve their goals, often rooted in basic needs to minimize physical pain and maximize pleasure It can also encompass specific needs such as eating, resting, or pursuing a desired objective Additionally, motivation may be influenced by less apparent reasons, including altruism, selfishness, morality, or the desire to avoid mortality It is important to distinguish motivation from both volition and optimism, as motivation is related to but distinct from emotion To better understand the terms used in this study, the following definitions are provided for research purposes.

The Longman Dictionary of Language Teaching and Applied Linguistics defines a game as "an organized activity that usually has the following properties: a particular task or objective, a set of rules, competition between players, and communication between players by spoken or written language" (Grihards, Platt, & Platt, 1995, p 89) Additionally, Fleckenstein & Hauck emphasize the importance of these elements in understanding the dynamics of language games.

According to Aເເ0гdiпǥ ƚ0 Maгƚiпs0п aпd Saumaп (2008, p 478), games are effective tools for learning as they provide students with a safe environment to explore alternative decisions without the risk of failure Engaging in gameplay teaches students how to strategize, consider alternatives, and think flexibly to achieve their goals.
Games are engaging activities that enhance thinking, learning, interaction, and problem-solving skills They allow players to generate information in a short time frame Some games require players to engage in physical activities or face mental challenges However, Lenning and Malarthe (1997) argue that playing a game is not an easy task; it should be governed by specific rules to ensure success.
When planning games, teachers should consider several important features: the classroom space, noise levels, necessary materials for the game, the time required for each game, and the students' level, culture, interests, and age.

Educational games, much like computer or online games, focus on engaging students in the classroom and require the involvement of rules, competition, relaxation, and learning A primary purpose of using games in class is to enhance students' motivation to learn English Prensky (2006 and 2011) defined educational games as interactive plays that teach us goals, rules, adaptation, problem-solving, and integration, all represented as a story They fulfill the fundamental needs of learning by providing enjoyment, passionate involvement, structure, motivation, ego gratification, adrenaline, creativity, social interaction, and emotion.

Games are beneficial for students learning English as they enhance motivation and self-confidence Incorporating games into English teaching methods can elevate students' engagement and promote higher levels of language acquisition By utilizing games that provide numerous opportunities for practice, students can gain a deeper understanding of meaningful lessons.
F0гemaп (2003, p 16) emphasizes that effective learning through performance requires active discovery, analysis, interpretation, problem-solving, memory, and physical activity, alongside extensive cognitive processing In essence, games create a constructive classroom environment where students and their learning are central, allowing them to derive personal meaning from their experiences.

Games enhance student engagement in the classroom, leading to increased motivation and a willingness to learn According to Phillips (1993), enjoyable activities are more memorable, fostering motivation for further learning, especially in language acquisition Games promote creativity, independence, and higher-order thinking, allowing for multiple answers rather than just one correct response This approach improves participation, self-confidence, and vocabulary usage, enabling students to explore various solutions to the same problem, mirroring real-life scenarios Additionally, games reinforce learning through diverse intelligences, making it essential for teachers to employ varied styles and strategies They often incorporate logical reasoning, communication, visual stimulation, and spatial relationships, facilitating the analysis and explanation of both new and existing material Hands-on experiences are crucial for critical learning, retention, and recall, as students actively engage with the material and collaborate with classmates In a foreign language classroom, it is particularly important for students to practice speaking with one another.
The goal of foreign language students is to communicate proficiently and independently in various situations They may not achieve this unless there are sufficient opportunities for guided and independent practice The interaction among students also fosters a community of learners Students will begin to meet each other as individuals and will engage more with one another.

Alhaj (2011) conducted research to explore and address a motivational problem among Sudanese secondary students learning English as a foreign language The author utilized previous studies, direct observations, and guided interviews to gather valuable information The findings indicated that the lack of motivation in English foreign language classrooms was attributed to several factors, including teacher training, school environments, family support, and the absence of developing programs that maintain students' interest in the learning process.
Additionally, it was found that a variety of classroom activities play an essential role in motivating students and facilitating the acquisition of English as a foreign language Therefore, it is recommended that teachers use debates, games, group work, pair work, interviewing, problem-solving, and role-plays to stimulate or motivate English language learners.
In Tuan's (2012) study, motivational factors influencing students' English learning performance were analyzed, focusing on effective ways to foster these factors The research aimed to determine whether motivation had an impact on students' English learning progress Results indicated that 94% of participants agreed that motivational activities are essential for their learning.

Games significantly enhance students' motivation and prepare them for life by fostering positive social attitudes They teach essential skills such as sharing, teamwork, and collaboration Through active participation, children learn effectively by doing, which leads to lasting knowledge retention During gameplay, students experience emotions like the joy of winning and the challenge of losing, providing teachers with insights into their character Consequently, games are essential tools for educators aiming to cultivate hard work and resilience According to Buckingham (2003), educational games also support students in developing focus, self-esteem, and memory These games encourage patience as students wait to achieve their next level, boosting their self-esteem by allowing them to recognize their accomplishments Milestones within games motivate students to progress, and at the end of each stage, they receive rewards that prepare them for future challenges This process enhances their focus and engagement in learning.

A primary advantage of educational games is that they enable students to work on multiple skills and subjects simultaneously within the curriculum The 2010 Horizon Report expands on this concept, highlighting numerous benefits from "open-ended, challenge-based, truly collaborative games," such as massively multiplayer online games (MMOs) Utilizing games of this type provides opportunities for students to develop skills across all areas of traditional education while simultaneously fostering research skills, problem-solving abilities, and leadership.
In his 2011 study, Prensky argued that students are naturally motivated to play games Serious games are interactive experiences that teach students essential skills such as goal setting, rule adaptation, problem-solving, and integration, all presented through a narrative These games fulfill fundamental learning needs by providing enjoyment, active involvement, structure, motivation, ego gratification, adrenaline, creativity, social interaction, and emotion Prensky emphasized that "playing has a deep biological, evolutionary importance, which must be specifically aligned with learning."

Action research is adopted as the research approach to address two research questions and achieve the aims and objectives of the study According to Ferrance (2000), action research is a suitable method for teachers who want to implement appropriate changes to student learning and measure the possible effects It demonstrates that "action research is used to chart the effects of implementation of a curriculum or strategy, to study student learning and responses." This method is also justified to offer significant benefits for the researcher, who is also a teacher.
According to J0Һпs0п (1995), there are three main advantages of action research The first advantage is that it promotes personal and professional growth The second advantage is that it improves practice to enhance student learning Finally, the third advantage is that it advances the teacher profession.
Action research is regarded as the best approach for this study for three main reasons First, its aim is to intervene in a deliberate way in the problematic situation to bring about changes and improvements in practice (Burns, 2009) Second, action research serves as a problem-solving approach for a specific teaching or learning situation Finally, it promotes health and well-being in educational settings.

The informal analysis in Step 2 revealed that students' low proficiency in language could be attributed to their lack of knowledge in motivation, vocabulary, and pronunciation, as well as insufficient time for integrating students and teachers This motivated the researcher to explore literature on classroom strategies applicable to teaching lessons While reviewing the literature, the researcher encountered the idea of using games in language teaching to enhance student motivation in learning English, suggesting that traditional classroom methods might help improve the situation.

The participants included 38 students from Class 10A1, comprising 20 females and 18 males, all aged fifteen at Tran Hung Dao High School Most of them come from mountainous areas with limited opportunities to learn English Their parents are primarily farmers, and their living conditions are quite low, as they only focus on earning a living to support their families and educate their children, leaving no time for their children's learning Additionally, while learning foreign languages, they only have access to a standard seven-year textbook for high school students, along with a few references to books and other resources for language learning.
The students' language skills are limited, and their awareness primarily stems from experiences accumulated through lessons rather than engaging in creative learning Consequently, they feel shy about interacting with their classmates during English lessons.

After completing the gaming sessions, a questionnaire was conducted to assess the overall opinions and value of using games The survey included three types of questions: rating scales, multiple choices, and open-ended questions The Likert scale ranged from strong agree to strong disagree, allowing participants to express their views on the listening sessions and their effectiveness This structured approach ensured that the responses could be easily quantified and analyzed.
In this study, a questionnaire consisting of six items was designed and distributed to all students The questionnaire utilized a five-point Likert scale, ranging from strongly agree to strongly disagree, to assess students' perceptions, attitudes, and opinions regarding the educational games used during treatment All questions were initially written in English and then translated into Vietnamese to ensure that students fully understood the items in the questionnaire.
The first item aims to explore students' perceptions of the importance of games in learning English The second item investigates students' opinions on using games in teaching English to apply in real contexts The third item focuses on understanding students' grasp of the lesson when learning with games The fourth item further explores this relationship.

The interview aimed to explore students' feelings and opinions on using language games in teaching and learning English Five students from class 10A1 were randomly selected to answer questions, all posed in Vietnamese to ensure clear expression of their ideas Each interview lasted 2 to 3 minutes, focusing on students' attitudes towards games and their engagement in lessons The information gathered reinforced one aspect of the research questions mentioned earlier While using questionnaires is beneficial, conducting interviews also has its drawbacks; some students hesitated to express their true feelings, likely fearing that their answers could impact their grades Therefore, the researcher met with them in person to mitigate any negative effects.

Games are an essential part of teaching material, as they are often fun and enhance learning Studies in pedagogy show that students learn better when engaged in enjoyable activities Teachers must continuously seek engaging activities and design effective strategies to encourage students to tackle these interactive tasks, which aim to improve their English language learning abilities Increasingly, educators worldwide are embracing classroom games to share experiences and generate ideas that allow for reflection on teaching and learning practices.
The interactive learning materials for games have gathered knowledge of various skills These materials aim to provide a solid grasp of the topics that students have already studied, offering insights into their progress and areas still needing improvement Despite the potential challenges posed by the language content, students appear open and eager to learn through the use of language games in their education Games can significantly aid learners in their educational journey.

The results indicated that language games enhance students' motivation, aligning with K̟ɣгiaເ0u's assertion that activities must engage and sustain students' attention and interest However, some students expressed disappointment with the games, suggesting that the frustration of failure could diminish the fun element Positive feedback regarding feelings is connected to the genuine sense of engagement in the activities.
Students experienced disappointment or disengagement during the game, which may have stemmed from either technical failures or accidental mistakes they made, leading to lower positions in the game.
In a conducive classroom environment where students feel comfortable, engaged, and motivated, research indicates that games significantly alleviate boredom This study aligns with previous research by Mefarlane and Sakellariou (2002), Fromme (2003), and Prensky (2011), revealing that using games in English teaching allows for the measurement of various factors, including the importance of language games, motivations for playing, and the role of fun elements Students perceive games as a crucial component in learning English and express a desire for their continued use in the future The reasons for playing games in class vary, ranging from the desire to win to the need to master knowledge Game elements such as fun, rewards, leaderboards, points, and challenges are effective in enhancing student motivation The results suggest that these are not the only reasons, and there may be multiple explanations for such outcomes, with a statement by Mefarlane shedding light on this phenomenon.

To maximize our potential, reality should be designed to enhance happiness rather than merely existing The motivational feedback is delivered instantly through points based on language proficiency and grammar correctness Even if the reward seems insignificant, it still serves as motivation Goal-oriented approaches are enhanced by the possibility of making step-by-step progress towards class objectives set by the teacher, as well as the chance of winning the game and being the best in class These elements are underscored by the presence of social experiences, described by Dei (2000) as relatedness, and viewed by Durghei (2001) as cooperation Students are not left alone; they collaborate, establishing how they work together and face the consequences of their mistakes collectively Therefore, the class-with-a-game reality is not broken, as it offers more motivational stimuli than mere reality.
Through teacher observations, it is noted that most students are eager to play games and engage in activities that foster interaction with each other A peer assessment described the students' motivation during a game as follows: “They are willing to do the activity; everybody wants to participate.” The students genuinely enjoyed the language games, which motivated them to learn and perform better The expressions of enjoyment on the students' faces indicate the need for opportunities to play games, as they provide an active and supportive environment for them in the classroom.
The findings of this research demonstrate that games are effective tools for teaching and learning a foreign language They help students build confidence to speak in real-life situations, allow for practice of English at any time, support the development of language skills, and cater to the needs of all ages in language learning levels.

Research has shown that incorporating games into teaching and learning processes positively impacts student motivation Games offer engaging input, allowing learners to interact within groups and enabling them to clarify their methods of acquiring new languages Implementing games in the classroom also enhances students' motivation to learn English This strategy encourages students to engage effectively with peers, utilizing a student-centered approach Additionally, games present challenges that require students to concentrate on completing tasks, thereby strengthening their mental capabilities Such activities are novel for students and encourage them to think critically to arrive at the correct answers.
A recent survey revealed that most students have a positive attitude towards the implementation of games in the classroom Many students believe that learning through games can enhance their motivation Additionally, incorporating games into lessons could significantly increase students' interest in the learning process The role of games in language learning should not be underestimated, as they create a conducive learning environment tailored to the needs of students, the learning process, and the requirements of a course.

The findings of this study highlight the importance of incorporating games into language teaching programs Therefore, all remarks, comments, and suggestions should be carefully considered Based on the results, several practical recommendations can be made for implementing game-based learning strategies to enhance the learning process.
Initially, the study involved 38 students from a single class as the primary participants, while other researchers aimed to expand and diversify the sampling of participants Increasing the number of students and classes will yield more comprehensive data for analysis Furthermore, additional research is necessary to investigate the effects of games on students' motivation in the learning process.
Games can serve as an alternative form of English education While the long-term effects of games warrant further research and experimentation, they are undoubtedly an effective teaching and learning method for enhancing student motivation Games should be integrated into the teaching process, allowing learners to benefit from English learning experiences at the appropriate time and place.
