1.1.1 Review of previous studies in Viet Nam

Tran Phuong Thuy (2010), Nghiên cứu hành vi sử dụng mạng internet của thanh thiếu niên Hà Nội The thesis shows the frequency of internet use by

Hanoi youth exhibit a high intensity of internet usage, with 35.9% accessing it multiple times a day and 31.4% once daily The peak online activity occurs between 8:00 PM and midnight (33.5%) and around 2:00 PM (21.9%) College students, enjoying greater independence, access the internet significantly more than their peers The rise in technology and diverse entertainment options has led to a vigorous increase in regular internet access among young people Most teens view the internet primarily as a source of information and entertainment, with 68.7% using it for chatting and 61.4% for online gaming Furthermore, all surveyed internet users engage in communication through chat and email, while students show a greater interest in online news and resources, with 35% participating in forums, blogging, and major social networks in Vietnam.

Nguyen Quy Thanh (2018) conducted a study examining the relationship between internet usage and the academic activities of students The research involved a survey of 640 students from 10 universities, split evenly between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City The key findings of this study highlight the impact of internet usage on students' learning processes.

Active and positive learning behaviors significantly influence students' academic performance High-achieving students tend to focus more in class and engage less in personal activities like reading unrelated materials Notably, students in the North utilize library resources more frequently than their Southern counterparts Additionally, female students are more inclined to discuss lectures with peers compared to male students Interestingly, while Internet use correlates positively with library visits, it primarily enhances the tendency to seek out academic resources rather than directly impacting overall active learning behaviors.

Anti-academic behaviors among students, such as private conversations, sleeping, and playing cards during class, are prevalent, with higher rates of absenteeism correlating with increased engagement in these activities Female students are more likely to engage in private discussions, while male students exhibit a higher frequency of conversations overall Urban students tend to work more during off-hours compared to their rural counterparts, and Northern students are more prone to sleeping or playing games in class than those in the South Interestingly, internet access influences non-academic behaviors; frequent internet users generally have lower dropout rates, yet those who never use the internet are more likely to engage in rule-breaking Daily internet users, particularly for learning purposes, show fewer behavioral issues compared to non-users, while moderate internet use is associated with lower rates of violations than complete non-use.

The study reveals that regional and gender factors significantly influence students' passive learning behaviors, while academic performance and years of study show no correlation with academic passivity Contrary to common beliefs, students in high-performing courses do not necessarily exhibit more active learning behaviors Additionally, internet access plays a complex role in these behaviors; frequent internet users tend to engage more in class discussions, yet those who use the internet primarily for communication are less likely to participate Interestingly, while extensive internet use correlates with reduced passivity during lectures, it does not lead to increased inquiries about the subject matter outside of class Overall, the internet's impact on students' passive learning behaviors is multifaceted.

Dang Thi Nga (2013) explores the usage of social networks among students at Thai Binh College of Education, highlighting their significant impact on both academic and social activities The research identifies Facebook, Zingme, and YouTube as the most popular platforms, utilized for various purposes including entertainment, studying, and job searching However, it also reveals that students often lack knowledge about effectively leveraging social media, which limits their ability to maximize benefits and minimize potential drawbacks The study concludes that the demand for social network usage among Thai Binh College students is notably high, with variations in usage levels and needs across different student groups.

The Internet serves as a valuable resource in enhancing the teaching-learning process for students However, its impact on learning outcomes is not as significant as anticipated To maximize its benefits, it is essential to improve access to the Internet for educational purposes while simultaneously transforming the educational approach Without this shift, students may remain passive, relying on existing knowledge without seeking additional information online, which can lead to continued high performance despite a lack of engagement This issue requires a coordinated effort among lecturers, students, and educational administrators to address effectively.

1.1.2 Review of the previous studies abroad

Research on Internet usage has been extensively explored by scholars across various fields The evolution of the Internet showcases the dedication of researchers, IT engineers, and programmers who have developed high-quality communication tools applicable in numerous domains In education, the integration of network technology has significantly enhanced teaching, learning, management, and evaluation processes Leading countries in education, such as the United States, France, and Japan, leverage the Internet as a vital resource to improve educational quality Consequently, numerous studies focus on maximizing the benefits of the Internet while also addressing its negative impacts to enhance the overall quality of education and training.

In 1998, Weiss, the president of the American College System Science Council, urged the faculty at the University of California to explore interdisciplinary collaboration This initiative aims to facilitate a unified training program that allows students to benefit from diverse offerings across various schools or faculties within a single institution.

Connecting courses is essential in today's educational landscape, as every university is part of a larger global professional community According to Ms Weiss (1998), information technology plays a crucial role in this integration She proposed a structured approach for designing courses that includes: identifying compatible content across multiple courses, creating a flexible curriculum, and exploring how information technology can enhance the delivery of these courses, moving beyond traditional classroom methods.

Information technology, initially developed for military and industrial applications, has since been integrated into education However, effectively applying IT in education requires a unique approach, where educators must redefine its purpose, standardize content and skills, and ensure alignment with overall learning objectives It is essential for teachers to assess the potential outcomes of each standard As noted by Hanseth, Monteiro, and Hatling, while information technology serves human needs, it is crucial to navigate the risks of information overload to preserve the human element in education.

A longitudinal study by Petter Bae Bradtzaeg (2012) examined the social networking habits of 2,000 Norwegian online users aged 15 to 75 The findings revealed a significant disparity in social capital between non-social users and those engaged in social networking, particularly in three key areas: face-to-face communication, the number of acquaintances, and bridging capital.

REVIEW OF THEORETICAL BACKGROUND

The Internet is a worldwide network of interconnected computer systems that communicate through the Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) This technology enables computers to exchange information, facilitating activities such as sending and receiving emails, transferring files, and accessing resources on the World Wide Web (WWW).

The Internet is a global information system that connects numerous computer networks, allowing for public access It transmits data using a standardized Internet Protocol (IP) in a packet-switching manner This vast network comprises thousands of smaller networks operated by businesses, research institutions, universities, and individual users.

The Internet is a vast network that connects millions of smaller computer networks globally through various means, including terrestrial and underground cables, as well as satellite links.

The Internet, developed in 1969 by the US government's Advanced Research Project Agency (ARPA) as ARPANet, aimed to connect university computer users for communication It was designed to maintain operational continuity even in the face of military attacks or natural disasters.

The term "Internet" was first introduced in 1974, while the network was still referred to as ARPANET By 1980, ARPANET had established itself as the backbone of the Internet In 1983, the TCP/IP protocol became the official standard for the US military, requiring all computers connected to ARPANET to adopt this new standard In 1984, ARPANET was split into two segments: the original ARPANET, focused on research and development, and MILNET, designated for military use.

In 1980, the establishment of NSFNET by the US National Science Foundation represented a significant milestone in Internet history, as it connected major computer centers By 1995, NSFNET had reverted to a research network, even as the Internet continued to expand rapidly.

The Internet has evolved into the world's largest interconnected network, impacting various sectors such as commerce, politics, military, research, education, and culture This ongoing evolution of Internet services has marked the beginning of a new era for humanity, characterized by the rise of Internet e-commerce.

Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web (WWW) in 1991 at CERN, building on Ted Nelson's 1985 concept of hypertext The Web, often referred to as the WWW, is a global network accessible to anyone with an Internet-connected computer It is important to note that the World Wide Web is not synonymous with the Internet; rather, it is one of the many services offered by the Internet, alongside others like email.

A hypertext system enables the storage of documents on the World Wide Web, which users can access through a web browser By entering a domain name in the address box, the browser communicates with a web server to retrieve the requested information and display it on the user's screen This process allows users to efficiently search for information across various web pages.

1991: Web Father, Tim Berners-Lee invents the World Wide Web (www)

1995: Amazon is founded by Jeff Bezos Until now, Amazon is still considered as one of the successful and large-scale e-commerce companies

1996: Yahoo! Listed on the stock exchange Yahoo is famous for its search, contacts, digital content, email and instant messaging services (Instant Messenger)

1997: MP3.com was founded The MP3 standard has made music and audio files easy to be transmitted over the internet Paving the way for internet entertainment technology

In 1998, Larry Page and Sergey Brin founded Google, revolutionizing internet search technology While many companies had previously developed search capabilities, it was Google's product that truly met user expectations Today, Google remains the most widely used search engine, enhancing the convenience of information access for users and providing websites with greater opportunities to connect with their audience.

In 1999, Peter Merholz coined the term "blog," derived from "Web log," which simplified website creation and allowed users to use the internet as a platform for personal diaries Over time, blogs evolved beyond mere personal reflections, transforming into vital tools for sharing knowledge, experiences, and opinions, thus becoming integral to social media.

2000: Google AdWords, an advertising service on Google, was born Advertising on Google Adwords then charged according to CPM (the number of times the ad appeared)

2002: Google AdWords changes billing to PPC (Pay per click) Later, this is one of the most popular forms of advertising by marketers

2003: eBay topples Amazon as the most visited UK web site

2006: Google acquires YouTube for $1.6 billion Opening up a new era of movie watching and movie sharing over the internet

In 2006, Facebook was officially launched for registered users, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of social networks This development made the concept of social networking more familiar to internet users, leading to the flourishing of social media As a result, the importance of internet users in communication was recognized, and their influence grew substantially.

2007: Iphone was born, opening a new chapter of smart phone, from here the connection of mobile communication and internet is even closer

2008: The world has 1.4 billion internet users

2011: The world has more than 2 billion internet users

The internet has rapidly evolved into a public resource, enabling simultaneous access for millions globally Users can explore a vast array of information online, with website appearances varying based on the browser utilized Newer browser versions enhance user experience by supporting additional features like animations and sounds.

The Internet plays a crucial role in the development of society through information technology, significantly influencing students' lives To navigate its positive and negative effects, effective measures are essential for helping students understand online communication Families, schools, and society must guide students in recognizing the Internet's role, selecting useful information, and mitigating negative influences Addressing the dangers of Internet abuse is vital in today's world.

Following the conclusion of this topic's research, the following recommendations are made:

3.4.1.Recommendations for Vietnam National University Of Agriculture

The school will work together to organize similar sessions and seminars to teach students how to effectively and appropriately use the internet to benefit their studies

3.4.2 Recommendations for the professors and academic advisors

Faculty and academic advisors play a crucial role in guiding students to leverage their skills effectively To enhance this support, academic advisors should organize a seminar at the beginning of the year focused on teaching students how to navigate and utilize the internet efficiently.

Students should establish a time limit for internet use to prevent it from disrupting their daily routines Furthermore, they need to find a balance between studying and entertainment while online.

To effectively navigate the vast amount of online information, it is crucial to learn how to discern between reliable and unreliable sources Developing the right mindset when engaging with digital content will enhance the efficiency of internet use and foster a positive social environment for students.
