PART 1: INTRODUCTION

1.1 Research rationale:

In the whole process, the business background will be going hand in hand withthe environmental protection When the living standards of people are on the rise andtheir learning level is increasing gradually, human needs are not just satisfied bygetting all the material gains they can earn but they also need a good environment. This is the reason why they want to redirect strategies to a sustainable development.Nowadays, businesses targeting the optimization of profits do not stop or care toexploit natural resources, which pose a threat to the depletion of the world’s supplyand trigger negative impacts on the environment such as: Air polution, water polution, poisoned waste, etc For manufacturers who invest in waste treatment, environmentalprotection places a burden on producing cost and reducing competition, thus it canreduce profits For their own benefit, businesses often overlook the common benefit ofsociety So how to accomplish to develop economically to achieve sustainabledevelopment?

At this time, the primary response for sustainable developement is cleanerproduction The introduction of cleaner production (CP) has played a significant role

on the sustainable development CP helps to save the energy and natural resources, iteven removes the waste lines with an effeciency up to 100% Today, the controllingpollution at the end of the pipe does not seem to be an efficient solution due to its loweffectiveness and high cost Instead of that, the use of vertical pipes or CP has beenprevalent CP is proactive and precautionary before the waste is generated Therefore,

if the enterprise applies cleaner production, it not only benefits many businesses butalso society CP is one of the most important strategies of many countries

1

Trang 10

Implementing CP technology in the industry is a way to bring benefits to the economyand at the same time contribute to reducing environmental pollution, allowingenterprises to fulfill the requirements of environmental protection The application ofcleaner production will also help businesses to build a good reputation and productsthat can compete in the domestic and foreign markets.

Hoang Van Thu Paper Joint Stock Company is located in Quan Trieu Ward, ThaiNguyen City Hoang Van Thu Paper Joint Stock Company is considered as one of thecradles of Vietnam paper industry, with a long history of development and a unit thathas boldly applied cleaner production in recent years, it has brought about very goodresults The company has solidified its name and position in the domestic andinternational market and contributed to the economic development of Thai Nguyen inparticular and of Vietnam in general In order to contribute to a sustainabledevelopment and promote the application of cleaner production in enterprises located

in Thai Nguyen province, I conducted research named: “Evaluation of CleanerProduction strategies efficiency in carton paper production in Hoang Van Thu PaperJoint Stock Company, Thai Nguyen city, Thai Nguyen province”

1.2 Research’s objectives

- Understanding the current status of production and the application of cleaner production options at Hoang Van Thu Paper JSC., Thai Nguyen

- Evaluating the effectiveness of the company's cleaner production options

- Researching to improve and propose new Cleaner Production solutions to the company

PART 2: LITERATURE REVIEW

2.1 Cleaner production review

2.1.1 The formation and development of cleaner production

Facts show that industrial processes always cause environmental pollution due to emissions, wastewater and solid waste

Figure 1: General diagram of industrial producing process

(Source: Heinz Leueuberger, 2000)

As the environment is threatened by the increase of the industry, the ways inwhich industrial pollution has caused environmental degradation have changed overtime:

Trang 12

Prevent the generation of waste at the source by using energy and materials in the

most efficient way, it means adding a rate of raw materials to the finished product

instead of eliminating it This approach began to emerge in 1980 with different ways

of "pollution prevention", "waste minimization" Today, the term "cleaner production"

is commonly used around the world to refer to this approach In the past, our way ofthinking in addressing environmental pollution still focused on the use of traditionalwaste treatment methods without regard to their origin Therefore, the cost of wastemanagement is increasing but the pollution is getting heavier The industry sufferedsevere economic consequences and discredited the market To get rid of this deadlock, industry is becoming more serious in reviewing the CP approach

2.1.2 The general concept of cleaner production.

According to the United Nation Environment Program (UNEP, 1994), cleanerproduction is the continuous application of an integrated environmental precautionarystrategy for production processes, products and services to reduce all bad impact on theenvironment and people

For production processes, cleaner production involves the preservation of rawmaterials, water and energy, the elimination of hazardous materials and the reduction

of the volume and toxicity of wastes into water and atmospheres

For products and strategies, CP aims to reduce all impacts on the environmentover the entire life cycle of products, from raw material extraction to final disposal. For services, cleaner production is the integration of environmental concerns inthe design and delivery of services

4

Trang 13

In summary, cleaner production requires the use of know-how, technologicalinnovation, and attitude change CP does not preclude development, but only requiresthat sustainable development be ecologically and productively sustainable economy.

2.1.3 Related concepts and terminology.

Pollution Prevention: The two terms CP and pollution prevention (PP) are often

used interchangeably They are only geographically different The term "PP" used inNorth America in CP is used in the rest of the world

Waste Minimization: The concept of waste minimization was introduced in

1988 by the US Environmental Protection Agency The WM focuses on recyclingwaste and other means to reduce waste by applying the 3P and 3R principles

Pollution Control: The fundamental difference between PC and CP is time PC

is a rear-end approach, much like late pipeline treatment, while cleaner production is aforward-looking approach that is predictive and preventative

2.1.4 Technical solutions for cleaner production.

Cleaner production solutions do not just change equipment, they are also changes

in the operation and management of a business Cleaner production options can bedivided into the following groups: Reduced waste at source, recirculation, productimprovement

Internal Control is the simplest method of producing cleaner Good

housekeeping does not require investment and can be done right after identifying thecause and finding solutions

Better Process Control to ensure optimum production conditions in terms of

raw material consumption, production and waste generation The parameters of theproduction process such as temperature, time, pressure, pH, speed should bemonitored and maintained as close to the optimum conditions as possible

5

Trang 14

Material Replacement is the replacement of materials used with other

environmentally-friendly materials Changing materials may also be a better purchase

of quality materials to achieve better use Usually the amount of raw materials used, the quality of raw materials and products have a direct relationship with each other

Improving Equipment is to change the existing equipment to a lesser extent.

The improvement of the equipment may be to adjust the speed of the machine, tooptimize the size of the storage area, to insulate the hot surface / Cool, or designimproves the necessary parts in the device

New production technology is the installation of more modern and efficient

equipment This solution requires higher investment costs than other cleanmanufacturing solutions, which need to be carefully researched Nevertheless, thepotential for saving and improving quality may be higher than other options

Raw materials circulation:

the production process

streams" so that it can become a new product or be sold to other manufacturing

facilities

Changing products:

cleaner production

product If you can replace a metal cover that has been painted with a plastic cover forcertain products, it will avoid the environmental problems as well as the cost of paintingthe lid Improved product design can save on consumption of raw materials and toxicchemicals used

6

Trang 15

In practice, in order to bring great effect to the application of CP productionprocess to production, enterprises often apply various solutions in each productionprocess (US EPA 1988).

2.2 The situation of the Implementation of cleaner production in the world and Vietnam

2.2.1 Implementation of CP in the world

In 1989, UNEP initiated the "Cleaner Production Program" to disseminate theconcept of cleaner production and promote the application of the CP strategy inindustry, especially in developing countries The first UNEP symposium on thissubject was held in Canterbury (UK) Subsequent conferences were held every twoyears: in Paris (France, 1992); Warsaw (Poland, 1994); Oxford (UK, 1996); Phoenix(Korea, 1998), Montreal (Canada, 2000), Prague (Czech Republic, 2002) In 1998,the term cleaner production was formally used in UNEP's "International Declaration

on Cleaner Production"

In the world, most countries also have CP programs and on-site support forindustrial enterprises In Asia, most countries have CP programs in various industries. This is supported by the Government, the industry and the support from foreignorganizations

Today, CP has been successfully applied in developing countries such as China,India, the Czech Republic, Tanzania, Mexico, etc., and is being recognized as aproactive, holistic approach in industrial environment management A cement plant inIndonesia by applying clean production has saved $ 35,000 a year Time to recoverinvestment for clean production less than a year In China, experimental projects at 51companies in 11 industries have shown that clean production has reduced pollution by

7

Trang 16

15 to 31 percent and is 5 times more effective than conventional methods (CleanerProduction Program, 2012).

In general, cleaner production patterns in the fields of countries around the worldare very rich in the industry and the efficiency is also very good Governments havedeveloped a strategy for cleaner development, many of which provide for theapplication of cleaner production in the industry

2.2.2 Implementation of Cleaner Production in Vietnam

The concept of cleaner production was introduced and tested in our country in

1995 through two internationally-funded projects: "Cleaner Production in the PaperIndustry" and "Textile Waste Reduction" by UNEP in Bangkok and CIDA-IDRC(Canada) These two projects stop at the conceptual introduction level and identify thepotential for waste minimization Subsequently, the concepts of ecological efficiency, pollution prevention, green energy were introduced into our country Although thedesignation is different, the nature of the concepts is quite similar with the purpose of

"improving the efficiency of materials and energy use and actively preventing thegeneration of waste at the source Produce them, minimize pollutants entering theenvironment On September 22, 1999, Minister of Science, Technology andEnvironment (formerly) Chu Tuan Nha signed the International Declaration onCleaner Production, affirming the commitment of the Vietnamese Government to thesustainable development strategy

Over the past few years, CP activities in Vietnam have focused on:

- Disseminate information and raising awareness

- Demonstrating CP technology in enterprises to persuade the industry to take the

CP approach into production and business

8

Trang 17

- Training human resources and building international capacity on cleaner

production and building legal basis for CP promotion

Examples of CP application in Thai Nguyen:

Paper production, cement production, metallurgy, fibroximang

For paper and pulp production: at ThaiNguyen Paper Export Joint StockCompany the products are yellow paper for export to Taiwan Raw materials of wood, bamboo, with a capacity of 6,500 tons per year, the company has a total staff 200employees Implementation solutions include 29 measures (19 internal management, 1improvement 2 changeable materials, 4 changeable equipment, 1 technology change, 2revolutions and reuse

2.3 Implementation of CP to the paper industry in Vietnam

In recent years, the protection and management of the environment of Vietnamhas been paid more attention and management and especially since the PrimeMinister's Decree 64 was born, a series of businesses Viet Nam has seriousenvironmental pollution issues to close A number of businesses, including paper mills, have to change their production facilities to improve the quality of the environment.According to the Vietnam Cleaner Production Center, only nine paper and pulpproducers are participating in the CP program, saving about VND10 billion a yearfrom raw materials, coal, FO oils and clean water , while the investment capital for CP

is only 3.3 billion VND with a short payback period of less than 1 year It isnoteworthy that nine enterprises participating in CP production process have reducedthe volume of wastewater more than 1,800,000 m3 / year, the amount of CO2 reduced

by 6,000 tons / year (Vietnam Cleaner Production Center 2009 "Cleaner ProductionGuideline in Paper and Pulp Industry"

The application of cleaner production in new industries is initially piloted insome basic production sectors The application of cleaner production in Vietnameseenterprises at the present time is also It is extremely difficult especially for the pulpand paper industry The difficulty of applying cleaner production in Vietnam's paperindustry is not only the cost of technology transfer but also the supply of raw materialsfor production Most Vietnamese paper producers Raw materials used in pulpproduction are natural resources, with very few enterprises using recycled materials

* Explain the process:

Paper material is loaded into the hydraulic grinding tank by the conveyor system

At the same time the water is pumped in (both new and circulating water) in largequantities and the system will beat into a powder mixture of about 4.5% concentrationand then pumped into the powdered tank At the hydraulic tank a number of impuritieshave been removed by the hydraulic system of the machine

Powder from the pellet is pumped through a high-purity sand filter system toremove the sand, then the mixture is then placed in a hot diffuser (if the material isOCC) or just beat if the raw material is UKP Unbleached) After passing the hotdiffuser is mixed into the powdered tank

Powder continued to pump powder through the disk grinding system, where thepowder is crushed to match the technical specifications for cement paper, then put intothe mixed tank Here the powder is glazed resin, waterproof, durable product and thepowder is diluted to a concentration of 2.5 - 3% and stirred by the stirring system inthe tank

After mixing, the resin and thinners will be pumped into the tank Here thepowder is diluted automatically, the concentration of powder in the tank is 2.4% andthe alum (for the purpose of precipitating the resin) From the tank, the powder ispassed through a low-grade sand filter system according to the principle of Cyclone toremove impurities heavier than powder Then the powder is passed through the finalscreening system before being fed to the net

Powder after passing the sieve is put into the system The system consists of apressure container, a full support net, a suction cup and the abdomen This is a paper-making system and also the main source of water for the whole production line

23

Trang 37

Powder from the low concentration after the system formed paper, on the powderedmesh is evacuated by the vacuum system, the paper is on the net and the water underthe net through the trough and brought to the white tank Moist paper on the mesh isprovided through the paper press, usually using 3 pairs of paper Paper through thepressing system has a moisture content of about 40% and waste water generated alsothrough the trough and return to the white tank.

After the paper is pressed into the oven, the energy supplied to the oven is takenfrom the steam of the boiler The drying system consists of many dried and dried papersheets according to the prescribed curve The paper after drying reaches a moisturecontent of about 8% for fiber opacity and is rolled into large rolls prepared forsubsequent processing Finally, the paper is rolled up to the size of the customer andthen placed in the final product
