Tony: The club meets on Monday, but the competition is on Wednesday We’re going to practise on

Tony: I’m not great at biology! I enjoy physics the most But I think this competition will have lots of
questions on chemistry
Lisa: Is there a prize?
Tony: Yes First prize is cinema tickets for everyone in the team Much better than a box of chocolates
And even if we don’t win, we can all keep our special T-shirts

TRANSCRIPT PART 1:
Hi everybody I’m Kiko from Japan I am studying English for 5years, I love it And I have some suggestions for those who want to improve vocabulary
Trang 15First, most vocabulary words are learned from context The more words you’re exposed to, the better vocabulary you will have While you read, payclose attention to words you don’t know Then look the new words up Read and listen to challenging materials so that you’ll be exposed to many new words
Learning a word won’t help very much if you promptly forget it Research shows that it takes from 10 to 20 repetitions to really make a word part of your vocabulary It helps to write the word- both the definition and a sentence you make up using the word- perhaps on an index card that can later be reviewed As soon as you learn a new word, start using it Review your index cards periodically to see if you have forgotten any of your new words Also, do a search on a word using webpage dejanews.com (for searching newsgroups) to get many examples of how the word is actually used That’s D-E-J-A-N-E-W-S COM
Finally, you really should make up as many associations and connections as possible Say the word aloud to activate your auditory memory Relate the word to words you already know
PART 2:
Woman: Hello, school of Italian Studies
Man: Hello, I saw your advertisement in a newspaper Can you give me some information, please? Woman: Yes, of course What would you like to know?
Man: Well, first, how long are the courses?

Over the past 600 years, English has grown from a language of few speakers to become the dominant language of international communication English as we know it today emerged around
1350, after having incorporated many elements of French that were introduced following the Norman invasion of 1030 Until the 1600s, English was, for the most part, spoken only in England and had not attended even as far as Wales, Scotland, or Ireland However, during the course of the next two centuries, English began to spread around the globe as a result of exploration, trade (including slave
trade), colonization, and missionary work Thus, small enclaves of English speakers became established and grew in various parts of the world As these communities proliferated, English
gradually became the primary language of international business, banking, and diplomacy Currently, about 80 percent of the information stored on computer systems Worldwide is in English Two-thirds
of the world’s science writing is in English, and English is the main language of technology, advertising, media, international airports, and air traffic controllers Today there are more than 700 million English Users in the world, and over half of these are non-native speakers, constituting the largest number of non-native users than any other language in the world
* Choose the best answer:
1 What is the main topic of this passage?
A The number of non-native users of English
B The French influence on the English language
C The expansion of English as an international language
D The use of English for science and technology
