Abstract:
Interest in translation has become deeper alongside fast-growing demand in human exchange with intercultural communication issues Translation has a crucial role in fostering understanding and exchanging cultures We, therefore, conduct a study to investigate the translation of indeterminate behavioral clauses from English to Vietnamese in Halliday‘s perspective of ideational metafunction [7] We pay attention to meaning and choice in translation as well as various strands of meaning according to the function performed by language In other words, we are in favor of meaning choices rather than stylistic choices The findings show that there are significant differences in terms of lexico-grammatical choices and process selections in transitivity system relating to translating indeterminate behavioral clauses with ambiguous and “dumb” processes, as well as understanding behavioral clause complex from English to Vietnamese In addition, this study emphasizes the feasibility of using register
in functional grammar as a tool for assessing the equivalence carried out by translators in the translation process
