5 Classif ic tion of objects a cording to purpose or task and

associate let er codes

If , ir esp ctive of its p sition in an tre -l ke stru ture, an o ject interacts or is inten ed to

interact with a flow (f or example of electrical energ , information or material), the purp se- or

tas - elated clas ification s heme an the let er codes presented in ta le 1 s al b u ed

In prin iple, it is p s ible to clas if y an o ject ac ordin to ta le 1 It is recommen ed that this

ta le b u ed wherever a pro riate

In an ex B, fig re B.1 s ows the clas es of ta le 1 related to a generic proces model

For the clas ification of o jects ac ordin to the clas if i ation s heme given in ta le 1, the

f ol owin a pl es:

– the relevant o ject s al b viewed with regard to how it acts on the flow but without takin

into ac ou t how this is implemented;

EXAMPLE 1 The desired purp se of an o ject is "he tin " Ac ordin to ta le 1, this

o ject is cle rly related to clas E It is not of imp rtan e, or simply not k own at an e rly

stage of a desig proces , how the req ired purp se is re l zed This may b done by u in

a gas or oi burner or an electric he ter In the case of an electric he ter, the he t may b

prod ced by an electric resistor A resistor may, in other cases, b clas if ied by its purp se,

" estrictin a f low", ac ordin to clas R The purp se of the o ject in the proces is,

however, to prod ce he t, so clas E, not clas R, s ould b u ed

– there may b cases where more than one purp se or tas is identified In these cases, a

main purp se or tas s al b taken into ac ou t;

EXAMPLE 2 A f low- ate recorder stores me s red values f or later u e but, at the same

time, del vers an output in visible f orm If storin is regarded as the main purp se, the

o ject is related to clas C of ta le 1 If the in ication of me s red values is regarded as

the main purp se, the o ject is related to clas P

clas es In the context of this stan ard, these typ s of o jects are cal ed infastru ture o jects

In man cases, it is recommen ed to diff erentiate the con tituent o jects by me n of se arate

leter codes Ta le 2 provides a fame for setin up a clas if i ation s heme an as ociated

leter codes for inf rastru ture o jects (se also an ex C)
