National foreword

This British Standard is the UK implementation of EN 61300-2-52:2013 It is identical to IEC 61300-2-52:2013

BSI, as a member of CEN, is obliged to publish EN 61300-2-52 as a British Standard However, attention is drawn to the fact that during the development of this European Standard, the UK committee voted against its approval as a European Standard

The committee noted a possible inconsistency between clause 3, which states that optical measurements should be made before and after the test, and clause 5.4, c) which states that optical measurements are also made during the test The committee is also of the opinion that the mention of fibre, cable and resilient members being fixed together in clause 4.3 may not be appropriate for all fibre optic connectors

The UK participation in its preparation was entrusted by Technical Committee GEL/86, Fibre optics, to Subcommittee GEL/86/2, Fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components

A list of organizations represented on this subcommittee can be obtained

on request to its secretary

This publication does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of

a contract Users are responsible for its correct application

FIBRE OPTIC INTERCONNECTING DEVICES

AND PASSIVE COMPONENTS – BASIC TEST AND MEASUREMENT PROCEDURES – Part 2-52: Tests – Bending test for cords

1 Scope

This part of the IEC 61300 series describes a procedure to determine the suitability of a cord to withstand bending around a mandrel of the sort to be applied during normal use This test is only applied to single fibre cables and multiple fibre circular cables It is not applicable to ribbon cables

2 Normative references

The following documents, in whole or in part, are normatively referenced in this document and are indispensable for its application For dated references, only the edition cited applies For undated references, the latest edition of the referenced document (including any amendments) applies

IEC 61300-1, Fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components – Basic test and

measurement procedures – Part 1: General and guidance

IEC 61300-3-1, Fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components – Basic test and

measurement procedures – Part 3-1: Examinations and measurements – Visual examination

IEC 61300-3-3, Fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components – Basic test and

IEC 61300-3-4, Fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components – Basic test and

measurement procedures – Part 3-4: Examinations and measurements – Attenuation

3 General description

The purpose of this test is to determine the capability of the cord when repeatedly bent Optical measurements are made before and after the test to screen for evidence of damage to the fibre/cable

4 Apparatus

4.1 General

A single mandrel apparatus shall enable the sample to be wrapped tangentially in a close helix around a single test mandrel

4.2 Cord

A cord is a fibre optic cable terminated with any passive fibre optic connector on both ends, regardless of its expected use Examples include equipment cords, work area cords or patchcords

Trang 8

– 6 – 61300-2-52 © IEC:2013

4.3 Specimen

The specimen shall be a cord The connectors shall be terminated according to the manufacturer's instructions so that the fibre, cable and resilient members are fixed together

4.4 Optical measurements

Unless otherwise specified, measuring equipment specified in IEC 61300-3-4 shall be connected to the specimen for monitoring optical performance during the test

5 Procedure

5.1 General

Sufficient tension shall be applied to ensure that the sample contours the mandrel The sample shall then be unwrapped

A cycle consists of one wrapping and one unwrapping

The diameter of the test mandrel, the number of turns of the mandrel and the number of cycles shall be shown in the relevant specification

5.2 Preconditioning

Precondition the specimen and all equipment for 2 h under standard test conditions as defined

in IEC 61300-1, unless otherwise specified in the relevant specification

5.3 Initial examinations and measurements

Complete the initial examinations and measurements

5.4 Procedure

a) Connect the specimen to the optical measurement equipment according to IEC 61300-3-3 b) The specimen shall be initially positioned as shown in Figure 1 The two straight sections shall be perpendicular to the mandrel and spacing between the two straight sections shall

be such that the diameter of the loop is greater than the cable's minimum bend diameter c) Start the optical power measurements

d) The specimen shall be wrapped around the mandrel at a uniform tension such that there are no gaps between the cable and the mandrel during the bending cycles (see Figure 2) The required number of turns around the mandrel shall be applied Each revolution of cable

on the mandrel shall be close to the adjacent revolutions or cable wraps (see Figure 3) e) The specimen shall be kept in this position for at least 1 min

f) The specimen shall be unwrapped and kept in this position for at least 1 min

g) The required number of cycles shall be applied by repeating steps d) to f) in a timely manner at a rate no greater than 1 wrap per minute

h) Stop optical power measurements

Figure 3 – Required number of mandrel rotations applied 5.5 Final examinations and measurements

Unwrap the cable from the mandrel and make the final measurements, as defined by the relevant specification, to ensure that there is no permanent damage to the specimen The results of the final measurement shall be within the limit established in the relevant specification

Visually check (IEC 61300-3-1) that the cable and fibre optic device are not damaged

6 Severity

Severity consists of the combination of the number of turns per helix, number of cycles, mandrel diameter and cord length The severity shall be specified in the relevant specification

or taken from Table 1 below:

7 Details to be specified

The following details, as applicable, shall be specified in the relevant specification:

a) cable and connector type;

b) wavelength of the attenuation measurement;

c) initial examinations and measurements and performance requirements;

d) examinations and measurements during test and performance requirements;

e) final examinations and measurements and performance requirements;

f) deviations from test procedure;

g) additional pass/fail criteria;

h) diameter of the test mandrel, the number of turns of the mandrel, and the number of cycles
