growth, and their security is the enabler for the country’s sustainable long-term development Hence, it is essential to examine these three resources from a cross-sectoral perspective, underpinned with an integrated methodological framework to analyse the nature of linkages and assess their potential impacts

Based on the discussion of the research background, following hypotheses are developed:

 The current policy focus for ensuring EFW security of Vietnam is deficient as it

is based on siloed thinking, neglectful of the complex, multifaceted, interlinkages (nexus) between EFW, the economy, the society and the environment

 The underlying assumptions of impacts from alternative developmental pathways (scenarios) - associated trade-offs, therefore indicates that Energy-Food-Water nexus provides the Vietnamese policy makers a robust platform to inform their policy choices to promote EFW security, while ensuring the much-needed socio-economic development of the nation, in consideration of least environmental impacts

In order to justify these research hypothesis, three critical research questions are developed, namely:

 How have the energy – food - water linkages evolved throughout the historical evolution of the country?

 What are socio-economic-environmental impacts from alternative developmental pathways (energy-food-water scenarios) for the period 2014-2030?

What are policy choices and trade-offs from various energy-food-water scenarios?

Research Objectives

This research primarily aims to develop a comprehensive analysis of the linkages nexus between energy, food and water in Vietnam, with a view to facilitate the country’s socio-economic development This is defined by the following specific objectives:

 To analyse the historical evolution of Vietnam’s energy-, food- and water-security nexus

 To develop long-term energy-food-water security scenarios for Vietnam after considering the critical factors impacting the formulation of the country’s future energy, food, and water policies

 To examine the long-term impacts of various energy-food-water scenarios in terms

of energy, food, and water security
