SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES IN MAKING QUESTIONS BETWEEN ENGLISH AND VIETNAMESE CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION Background of the problem Clearly, culture plays important role in the language of each country as the perspective, understanding and belief towards a problem or topic is different. When interacting with people in another language, it also means that we are communicating with the culture that speaks the language. In other words, the language and culture are inseparable (Jiang, 2000). Because of this, the making question is an act of communicating that is much affected by culture. In many cultures, misinterpretation of question could be troublesome in an intercultural context. In some languages, the questions have various meaning. This is also true with question in English and Vietnamese, especially for those who learn these languages as the culture of Vietnam is quite unique and reflects much of Asian culture.
