Multnomah University is a private non-denominational Christian university in Portland, Oregon The University equips students to love Christ and serve their neighbors through their lives and work

History

In 1936, Reverend John G Mitchell was convinced that the Pacific Northwest needed a school to faithfully instruct men and women in the truths of God’s Word In February

of that year, Reverend Mitchell called

a meeting of Portland-area ministers and Christian business people to discuss his vision Together, these men made that vision a reality, and the Multnomah School of the Bible was born Classes began in October

1937 in a former mortuary with 49 students and a half-dozen faculty

In the spring of 1939, Multnomah granted diplomas to thirty-one students in its first graduating class

As its academic programs grew, Multnomah School of the Bible became Multnomah Bible College and Seminary in 1993 Multnomah achieved regional accreditation

by becoming a member of the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities in 2005 providing greater flexibility to transfer credits between more institutions In 2008, Multnomah became Multnomah University With the addition of adult degree completion, master’s degree programs, and Biblical Seminary divisions, it became necessary to describe Multnomah in new terms Now, Multnomah alumni and former students enjoy the benefits of a university education that is properly represented

Multnomah has fostered many ministries and businesses in its history and, in 1989, created International Renewal Ministries (IRM) This ministry serves as a catalyst for racial reconciliation and denominational unity in the body

of Christ Multnomah has contributed to the betterment of the Northwest by creating multiple ministries such

as Christian Supply, Multnomah Press, and Mission Portland Networking which all function independently of Multnomah

Opportunity

In April of 2021, the President of Multnomah University, Rev Dr Craig Williford, announced his plan to retire by June 30, 2022 With the assistance of

a Presidential Search Committee and CarterBaldwin Executive Search, the Board of Trustees has begun

a search for the institution’s sixth president to build upon the positive momentum generated in the last seven years For its future, Multnomah seeks a president called to serve the Pacific Northwest, the nation, and the world by advancing a Christ-centered education that prepares students for lives of faith and impact Building upon the rich history of the university, the investments made by faculty and staff, the quality of the academic programs, and a faith community committed to the spiritual formation of students,

an opportunity exists for the next president to champion Multnomah University and its distinctiveness to attract others to join in advancing the mission of the institution This active promotion of Multnomah’s mission must be rooted in the president’s deep love for developing students into ambassadors for Christ who serve the church, the marketplace, and the mission field

Priorities

Dynamic Relationship with Christ Love God, His Word, and others without reservation The president’s deep love for God will be evident in

a mature and active Christian faith The president embraces the university’s vision, core values, and

statement of faith Beyond sincere agreement with these articles, the president will possess personal confidence in Scripture’s unique ability—in concert with the Spirit’s work—to transform believers into the likeness of Christ

Academic Leadership & Innovation

The president comprehends the dramatically changing models for higher education and envisions how to leverage those emerging models in concert with Multnomah’s unique strengths to accomplish the university’s mission The president encourages a culture of innovation, challenging the faculty to exercise continued creativity in pursuit of Multnomah’s mission as a Christian university designed to thrive in the rapidly changing environment of the twenty-first century Christian higher education Considerations may include:

• Extending the university’s geographic reach beyond the Portland campus to include the far Northwest and the Pacific Rim

• Expanding academic programs, consistent with Multnomah’s mission, that effectively combine professional training with Christ-centered biblical integration designed to prepare students who will minister vocationally or in the marketplace

• Promoting the value of a strong Christian university in both the church and the marketplace

Financial Leadership

In service of the university’s goals, the president actively cultivates a culture of generosity and stewardship that will secure the university’s financial future, providing much-needed capital for the growth and change mandated by Multnomah’s mission The president leads with vigor and skill in the university’s economic development by creating a sustainable funding platform through diverse revenue for Multnomah’s future

The president ensures that a comprehensive and successful enrollment management system is implemented and effective Across the enrollment process, the president works with the Vice President of Enrollment Management & Marketing to meet annually assigned revenue goals in this area Regular analysis and application of the best practices in enrollment management are required

Cultural and Intercultural Engagement

The president values intercultural competence, recognizing the contributions to higher education of the rich ethnic and cultural diversity in our city, region, and the global church The president will therefore support initiatives to make the Multnomah community more accurately and vibrantly reflect this diversity The president navigates denominational differences, strengthens ties and service to the local church, and builds relationships with a diverse and multi-ethnic church abroad

Duties and Responsibilities

The President serves as the Chief Executive Officer for Multnomah University and chief advisor to the Board The President leads all university educational and managerial affairs by implementing Board policies, informing the Board on relevant matters, and serving as the university’s key spokesperson

The President provides leadership, vision, and oversight of all aspects of the university, working closely with vice presidents and other key staff to ensure the effective operation of the university by generally accepted best practices and to ensure that operating policies and procedures align with the university’s mission and commitment to diversity The President reports to the Board of Trustees and works with the Board in establishing policies to guide the institution

Responsibilities

• Cast a compelling vision and create consensus among key constituents for capitalizing on the university’s heritage and building on the strong foundations of faith and learning;

• Be the chief advocate and leader of the university’s mission and continue to raise the profile of the university nationally;

• Collaborate with the Chair of the Board of Trustees to share university updates, gain perspectives and advice, and discuss critical matters affecting Board policy and university governance;

• Serve as the university’s chief fundraiser, working closely with the Board and Office of Advancement to build an abundance mindset, develop relationships with donors, share the vision of MU’s future, and significantly increase the financial resources of the university;

• Prioritize enrollment development and monitor student recruitment operations to ensure sufficient enrollment to meet budgeted needs;

• Skillfully shepherd employees, affirming and championing the importance of their investment in student discipleship, their love for the institution, and their pursuit of academic excellence

• Serve as a compelling spokesperson for Multnomah University to both internal and external stakeholders;

• Be a student of higher education and societal trends to actively address the challenges within the context

of Multnomah’s mission and commitment to diversity;

• Leverage technology and innovative strategies to prepare students to compete for tomorrow’s jobs;

• Be a consistent presence in university events and activities;

• Be the face of Multnomah University to the external community and participate in key community events and organizations;

• Build partnerships with like-minded organizations, corporations, municipalities, and institutions to further common goals;

• Encourage and participate in, as appropriate, Multnomah University professional development opportunities;

• Serve as ex officio member of the Board of Trustees and all standing committees;

• Develop and cast a compelling vision that will attract, engage, retain, and inspire Multnomah’s students, faculty, administrators, trustees, and donors

• Be able to comfortably address local, regional, and national social and educational issues;

• Possess collaborative and consensus-building abilities to bring together a diverse group of constituents, including a track record of working with groups such as a board, faculty, staff, students, alumni, and other stakeholders in the region;

• Understand external environmental factors impacting higher education along with a demonstrated history

of proactivity and vision in identifying opportunities and solutions to mitigate negative consequences;

• Exhibit health, maturity, and integrity in personal life as well as in leadership style;

• Possess experience in utilizing a transparent, integrative process in decision making that is informed by Scripture, prayer, community wisdom, and careful research;

• Be honest, enthusiastic, resilient, and intentional

• Demonstrate progressively responsible record of visionary leadership in higher education, church, business, or non-profit environment;

• Possess strong business acumen with successful fundraising and campaign experience;

• Have demonstrated expertise in teaching, student achievement, and the success of others;
