Rationale

No one can deny the significance of language in the communication process. And language plays an essential role in people’s life and social development, especially English.

There are currently 7,139 distinct languages in the world, according to Ethnologue, the most comprehensive catalog of global languages The emergence of a common second language is increasingly important to facilitate global communication and meet the demands of today’s interconnected world English, in particular, has become a vital universal language, enabling people worldwide to exchange ideas and collaborate across borders.

- a universal language at present can be used as the unique tool satisfying this demand.

English has become increasingly essential in the digital age, serving as the dominant global language across various domains It effectively connects people worldwide, facilitating diplomatic relations, economic cooperation, and international communication Mastering English opens access to a vast array of information and opportunities, making it a vital tool for global integration and personal development Studying English is undoubtedly a strategic way to engage with the world and explore limitless resources and connections.

In today's post-pandemic landscape, countries worldwide are facing high unemployment rates, making it essential to enhance one’s career skills Acquiring valuable knowledge can help individuals secure their dream jobs in international companies, increase their earning potential, and improve their computer proficiency, especially since most computer programs are in English.

While speaking, listening, and reading English are important skills, they do not guarantee full comprehension Effective understanding also requires strong translation skills, which are essential for accurate communication As Vietnam progresses into the integration era, the demand for proficient English translation continues to grow, highlighting the need for comprehensive language proficiency beyond basic skills.

Vietnamese students need to develop expert translation skills to effectively navigate the increasing use of English in contracts, emails, and newspapers Mastering translation is essential for accurately converting documents and avoiding costly misunderstandings However, achieving proficiency in translation can be challenging, and most learners may still make mistakes Effective translation involves not only converting words but also capturing the overall meaning and purpose of the original text.

Many learners face numerous challenges when beginning written translation due to its unfamiliarity, and students at Thuong Mai University are no exception, especially when encountering complex English economic news sentences This study aims to serve as a valuable reference to improve translation skills and address students' difficulties in translating complex sentences within economic news, ultimately helping them achieve better results.

Previous studies

About “difficulties of translation of learner”, I found many research.

First, it is “Common mistakes in learning translation subject by the second- year English major at Dong Thap university” of Duong Thi Thuy Hang and Nguyen Thi Cam Xuyen.

The thesis comprises four main chapters, including a literature review on translation, its significance, influencing variables, and common errors in Vietnamese-English translation The research methodology covered topics such as research questions, participant selection, data collection tools, and study procedures In Chapter 3, the collected data were analyzed to identify sources of inaccuracies in translation The final chapter offers practical tips for students to avoid common translation mistakes Given the complexity of translation, the study emphasizes the importance of students focusing on self-study techniques and applying effective translation strategies to improve their learning process and achieve more accurate and fluent translations.

Effective Vietnamese-English translation requires students to thoroughly study the source language text, analyze its meaning, and then find natural equivalent expressions in the target language to accurately convey the original message.

The next study is “English majored students difficulties and expectations in learning written translation at Dong Thap University”, written by Nguyen Thi Hong Tham, Bui Thi Huyen Tran.

This study highlights the crucial role of translation as a means of cross-cultural communication, emphasizing the importance of faithful and precise text translation It explores various types of translation, effective tactics, and beneficial approaches, while also examining the elements that influence the translation process and common errors in written translation The research employed a comprehensive methodology, including specific research questions, participants, data collection tools, and procedures, allowing the researchers to gain a broad understanding of the virtual environment Ultimately, the study offers valuable insights and practical ideas to support English majors in their translation studies, enhancing their skills and understanding of cross-cultural transfer.

Le Phuong Lan’s study, “Unnaturalness in English – Vietnamese translation: causes and cures,” identifies both linguistic and cultural factors as primary sources of unnatural translations Linguistic causes include issues at the word, phrase, and sentence levels, as well as challenges related to linguistic untranslatability Cultural factors encompass difficulties in translating idioms, fixed expressions, connotations, classic allusions, and instances of cultural untranslatability The research explores the reasons behind unnatural translations, offering a comprehensive review of the current state of Vietnamese translated works, highlighting their strengths and weaknesses, and providing targeted recommendations for improvement.

A “long and complex sentence” in English can be classified into three types: paralleling long sentences, compound long sentences, and paralleling and compound long sentences Paralleling long sentences consist of two or more independent clauses linked without conjunctions, creating a sense of balance Compound long sentences integrate a principal clause with various subordinate clauses, such as noun, attributive, or adverbial clauses, resulting in intricate grammatical structures The most complex form, paralleling and compound long sentences, combine features of both paralleling and compound sentences, featuring multiple clauses and elaborate syntax These sentences often contain numerous clauses, complex grammatical frameworks, and many prepositional phrases Challenges in understanding and translating long and complex English sentences stem from cultural differences, diverse language families, and varying language styles, impacting aspects like word translation, sentence structure, word order, and connecting words Additionally, the translation process is influenced by different language patterns, such as the seven-sentence structure pattern and Chinese grammar theories, making a solid grasp of translation principles essential.

Finally, Tatiana V Emets, Iuliia V Baryshnikova, Alexey Yu Trutnev, Elena

V Suvorova, and Tatiana L Akhmetzyanova published “Logical and linguistic techniques for translating difficult phrases in literary texts of natural languages.”The goal of this study was to take a more comprehensive look of inferences inGerman and Russian, both as a logical category and as a logical-linguistic component of complicated sentences The researchers looked at German language content on a logical and linguistic level and came up with three models for constructing complicated sentences This research looked at logical and linguistic translation procedures from German to Russian.

This legal report employs complex sentences with multiple dependent clauses, including relative, nominal, participial, infinitival, adverbial, and interrogative types, with relative and nominal clauses being most common The use of varied quantities of dependent clauses—ranging from sentences with one to multiple dependent clauses—enhances the clarity and comprehensiveness of the report Legal language emphasizes accuracy, clarity, and inclusiveness, which necessitates the incorporation of dependent clauses capable of conveying extensive information These clauses play a crucial role in ensuring that law reports communicate complex legal details effectively.

To summarize, the complex sentences contained a large amount of information in a single sentence and presented the ideas in the most precise and concise way possible.

This research, titled “Indonesian Students' Writing Proficiency and Their Ability in Using Complex Sentences,” conducted by Bambang Yudi Cahyono, Nur Mukminatien from Universitas Negeri Malang, and Rosyi Amrina from Universitas Lambung Mangkurat, Indonesia, explores the writing skills of EFL students It specifically examines their ability to construct complex sentences and investigates the relationship between overall writing proficiency and their use of complex sentence structures, providing insights into factors that impact writing development among Indonesian EFL learners.

When choosing and carrying out this study, I expect to clarify 3 main issues:

- Researching the difficulties of translating complex sentences in English economic news of the 2nd-year-student of Faculty of English at Thuong Mai University.

- Identifying the causes of those difficulties of translating complex sentences in English economic news of the 2nd-year-student of the Faculty of English at Thuong Mai University.

- Giving suggestions to enhance the quality of translating complex sentences in English economic news of the 2nd-year-student of the Faculty of English at Thuong Mai University.

In order to achieve the aims, this study is seeking answers to the following questions:

- What is the complex sentence in translating English economic news into Vietnamese of English major students at TMU?

- What are difficulties when translating English news into Vietnamese?

- What are some measures to improve these problems?

Research Subjects

Translation can be categorized into two main forms: written and spoken translation At Thuongmai University, written translation is introduced to English faculty students starting from their third year, or earlier for those who register in their second year This study aims to identify students' challenges and expectations when translating complex English economic news sentences, with the goal of proposing effective measures to help students overcome these difficulties in their translation courses.

Our research focuses on identifying common challenges students face when translating complex terminology in English economic news through data analysis and comparison We utilize an analytical approach to understand these difficulties and develop effective strategies that help students translate large volumes of economic papers accurately and efficiently This study aims to enhance translation proficiency in the field of economic journalism by providing practical solutions tailored to students' needs.

The combination of the aforementioned strategies seeks to identify challenges and recommendations while translating complicated sentences in English economic news The research becomes clearer and more cohesive.

Organization of study

The study is divided into four parts, the second and third of which are the most pivotal, namely:

 Chapter 1: Introduction, which discusses the rationale, preceding research, objectives, subject, scope, techniques, and structure of the study.

 Chapter 2: Readers are going to approach the issue from the theoretical background They are as follows: translation, translation techniques, influencing factors on translation, complex sentences and their various types.

 Chapter 3: Research findings: The researcher investigated the problems associated with translating complex sentences.

LITERATURE REVIEW

Translation has been defined in a variety of ways The definitions listed below have been chosen.

Many linguistic scholars emphasize the importance of achieving equivalence between the source and target languages in translation Wilss (1982) defines translation as a transfer process aimed at transforming a written source text into an optimally equivalent target-language text, requiring syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic understanding Similarly, Bell (1991) describes translation as expressing in the target language what has been conveyed in the source language, maintaining semantic and stylistic equivalences, and involves replacing the original text with an equivalent representation in another language.

Understanding the concept of translation and exploring different schools of thought enhances learners' comprehension of this complex process By examining various definitions and approaches, students can develop a comprehensive perspective on translation, leading to more effective and accurate results This thorough understanding helps beginners approach translation with confidence, ensuring a solid foundation for their language and translation skills.

To ensure accurate and reader-friendly translations, I rely on the definitions provided by authors Bui Tien Bao and Dang Xuan Thu (1997), as they help clarify the core concepts and facilitate easier comprehension for the audience.

Translation involves converting written texts into another language while preserving the author’s original intent Skilled translators focus on accurately rendering the written word across different languages, handling a wide range of documents from simple items like birth certificates and driving licenses to complex materials such as professional journal articles, business contracts, and legal documents.

Peter Newmark gave eight translation methods in “A textbook of Translation”. a Word-for-word translation

Interlinear translation presents the target language (TL) words directly below the source language (SL) words, maintaining the original word order out of context This method translates each word individually based on its most common meaning, providing a clear, word-by-word understanding of the text.

A complex sentence in traditional grammar consists of an independent (main) clause combined with at least one dependent clause, providing more detailed information These sentences are connected by suitable conjunctions or pronouns, enabling clear and cohesive expression of complex ideas Understanding how to construct and identify complex sentences enhances both written and spoken communication skills.

A complex sentence consists of an independent clause combined with at least one subordinate (dependent) clause, which includes a subject but cannot stand alone as a complete thought These sentences can feature various types of subordinate clauses, such as adjective, adverb, and noun clauses, adding depth and detail to your writing Understanding how to use complex sentences with these clause types enhances both clarity and grammatical variety, making your content more engaging and SEO-friendly.

There’s only one kind of independent clause, but there are three types of subordinate clauses, are those that act as adjectives, adverbs and nouns.

That means that they modify nouns and pronouns.

In this form, the verb will only be in infinitive, V-ing and V-ed form.

2.2.3 The difference between a compound sentence and a complex sentence

A compound sentence consists of two independent clauses, each conveying equally important information These clauses are connected by coordinating conjunctions such as "and," "for," "so," "but," "nor," "or," and "yet," which link the ideas without altering the grammatical rank of either clause Using compound sentences properly enhances clarity and variety in your writing while maintaining grammatical correctness.

A complex sentence consists of one independent clause and at least one dependent clause, illustrating the relationship between different parts of a sentence These clauses are connected using subordinating conjunctions, which establish a hierarchy, making the dependent clauses less equal to the independent clause Understanding complex sentences is essential for improving sentence variety and clarity in writing.

RESEARCH FINDINGS

The questionnaire results

A 15-question questionnaire in English was designed to gather students' insights on translating complex sentences in English economic news It was distributed to 2nd-year students at the Faculty of English, Thuongmai University, with 80 copies given out and 80 copies collected The students’ feedback provides valuable information about their challenges and difficulties in translating intricate economic news sentences, helping researchers identify key areas for improvement.

The statistical analysis and the results of data analysis are displayed in the following tables and charts.
