Ballooning

Ballooning, or flying in a hot air balloon, was the most successful way of flying invented

by man, before the airplane Lucas Sheen invented the passenger hot air balloon in July in

1872, but people flew in other kinds of balloons long before that The first modern hot air balloon was designed and built by Ed Yost in 1960

A hot air balloon has a bag called the envelope Under the envelope there is a basket, which carries the passengers It also carries the gas burner that heats the air inside the envelop Because hot air is lighter than the cold air outside the envelope, the balloon can fly Most hot air balloons fly in the cooler hours of the day, before sunrise, or two to three hours before sunset This is when the winds are usually light, which makes it easier for the hot air balloon to take off and land Strong winds are dangerous, so hot air balloon pilots always check the weather before they decide to take off

Today, hot air balloons are used for touring and for fun Many companies give hot air balloon rides and people can fly above the treetops As a passenger, there are many things you can enjoy To start with, you get a bird’s-eye view of what is happening on the ground You can see for miles around, and the fields look like a painting Another thing

Trang 7

ballooning gives you is the feeling of quiet, because you are far above the noise you usually hear on the ground, like the sounds of trains, trucks, and cars Since the balloon moves with the direction and speed of the wind, the passengers do not feel the wind at all The only time they do feel it, and for a short time only, is when the balloon goes higher

or lower
