A Word to Parents —Within recent

times the subject of sex hygiene has beenfreely discussed by members of themedical profession and through them thegeneral public has been made more orless acquainted with the problem It hastherefore acquired a degree of genuineinterest which speaks well for the future

of the eugenic ideal Eugenics is based

to a very large extent upon the principlesunderlying sex hygiene

As a result of this widespread interest

Trang 32

and investigation, we have discoveredthat the only method that promises actualprogress, is to talk plainly and to tell theactual truth The day of the prude haspassed To attempt to achieve results inthe education of youth in sex problems, without giving, facts, is wasted effort.

To give facts we must explain eachproblem so that its principles may beclearly understood and its meaninggrasped To point out the duty of youth isnot sufficient They must be shown why

it is to their best interest to live the cleanlife In every department of education

we are beginning to appreciate that toachieve results it must be based upon theindividual equation This is why wehave found it necessary to assert that it is

Trang 33

the duty of parents to make sex hygiene apersonal matter and to acquaint theirchildren with the facts relating to thisproblem It has been discovered, however, that a very large percentage ofparents are inadequately informed onthese subjects, in fact they knowpractically nothing about the actual factswhich they are supposed to teach I shalltry to tell the story in a way which everyparent will understand.

When a boy reaches the age of puberty

he is susceptible to sexual desire If hehas not been told the story of his growthfrom boyhood to man's estate he willeither begin to abuse himself, or he will

be later enticed to commit himself tointercourse with some unclean female

Trang 34

and he will acquire a disease as a result.Inasmuch as it has been asserted thatpractically every boy has been addicted

to self-abuse at some time, and thateighty per cent of all males, between theages of sixteen and thirty years, arevictims of venereal disease, it wouldseem justifiable to assume that the boyswho are informed of the facts in time arethe boys who constitute the percentagewho escape This, of course, may not beliterally true, but it is a reasonableassumption

While self-abuse is a pernicious habitand may be attended with seriousconsequences, it is not a disease and, aswill be explained later, it can be cured

Trang 35

It is therefore a menace to the individual, not to the race, and consequently neednot concern us at the present time On theother hand the venereal diseases are not

to be considered as individual problemssince they affect the welfare of the race. The venereal diseases which we willconsider are gonorrhea and syphilis

The Social Evil.—It has been estimated

that there are more than ten millions of

people in this country to-day sufferingfrom the effects of venereal diseases In

New York city alone, there are two

million victims suffering from the direct

or indirect consequences of thesediseases It has been authoritativelyasserted that, out of every ten menbetween the ages of sixteen and thirty,

Trang 36

eight have, or have had, one or other ofthese diseases When it is rememberedthat these diseases are not merelytemporary incidents, but that they may beregarded as practically incurable in thevast majority, because of antagonisticsocial conditions and ignorance, and thatthey are highly infectious, we may begin

to realize how important they are fromthe standpoint of race regeneration

Statistics of these conditions are neverreliable because much of the evil ishidden and lied about It is quiteprobable,—if the estimates were basedupon absolute knowledge—that theextent of the prevalency of thesediseases would be greatly increasedrather than reduced It is however a fact,

Trang 37

that the combined ravages of the GreatWhite Plague, leprosy, yellow fever, andsmall-pox, are merely incidentscompared to the effects which thevenereal diseases have had uponmankind It is useless to think that thesediseases can be driven out of the land.Any hope of this nature is the impression

of the dreamer By a propaganda ofeducation, by the spread of the eugenicidea and ideal, we may, however, reasonably hope to minimize the eviland, at least, to protect the innocent

The Sources of Immorality.—It is a

fallacious idea to assume that thesources of immorality are confined to thelarge cities This is far from the truth Insmaller towns and country places the

Trang 38

diseases are quite common andconditions there tend to the spread of thecontagion in a more intimate and a moreharmful way The individuals who aremost likely to become affected are thosemost liable to succumb to temptation andwhose home ties are of the best Thereare many instances on record where one

or two loose women spread the infectionall over the country communities, infecting boys and men alike No one canestimate what the final effect of such anepidemic may mean or how manyinnocent individuals may have theirlives wrecked as a direct consequence

It is because these consequences are theproduct of ignorance in a very largepercentage of the cases that there is such

Trang 39

urgent need for enlightenment It is atleast our plain duty to tell the boy theactual facts—to post him with reference

to consequences The more thoroughly

we instruct him in the elementary factsrelative to the venereal diseases, thesafer he will be from temptation, and if

he possesses this knowledge andacquires disease, he will be more likely

to immediately seek competent aid andadvice

WHAT ARE THE

CONSEQUENCES OF VENEREAL DISEASE TO

THE BOY HIMSELF?

Trang 40

Gonorrhea or "Clap."—This is the

most frequent of the venereal diseases It

is also the most serious It is anunfortunate fact, that in the past,—andeven to-day—boys have been told thatgonorrhea is no worse than "a bad cold."This lie has been responsible for muchevil and a great amount of unnecessarysuffering and misery

Gonorrhea is caused by a germ, obtained, as a rule, during intercoursewith an infected person This germ iscalled gonococcus It thrives on anymucous membrane; it is not, therefore, limited to the sexual organs For thisreason it may attack any part of the bodywhere mucous membrane is It isparticularly liable to damage, sometimes
