UNIT 1: HOME LIFE

A READING trang 5 SBT

Part 1 Read the passage and circle the best answer A, B, C, or D

[ Đọc bài và khoanh tròn A, B, C, D]

Andrea - There are six of us in our family, my parents, the twins, my elder brother

Ted and me Ted is a good ten years older than me and the twins – they are girls - are two years younger than me We had a good childhood out in the countryside My parents were always busy with the farm so we didn’t get the help

with school work and things like that that children get today But my parents were very loving, especially my father I regret not helping more around the farm because now I realise that it must have been very hard for my parents, especially as my grandparents lived so far away

Bob - Both my parents were in the theatre and they had made quite a name for themselves on the stage As a child I remember our house being constantly full of

famous people, laughing and talking My two sisters and I would be brought down

by chit nanny to kiss our parents goodnight and then we would be packed off to the nursery That’s as much as we ever really saw of them at that time And I never saw

my grandparents as they had died before I was bom It’s better now, but it has left a mark on all of us - we ring each other now and again, but that’s about all I think my

father understands this, but I am not sure my mother does

Camillia - I left home when I was sixteen to live with my grandparents in Sydney -

My parents had a farm in the outback and I needed to go to college It was quite difficult for me to leave my four younger brothers and sisters behind as we were

quite a tight-knit group, even though the age gap was fairly wide - as you can

imagine there was no one else to play with out in the middle of nowhere! When I got fed up I’d give them a ring, and my dad would always put me right – a tower of strength he was My grandparents were great too- helped me with my homework, took me on trips, things like that I’ll never forget that

David - I am always telling my kids - your family is always there for you, whatever

happens You might think we don’t understand you and all that rubbish, but no one else will look after you the way the family will Family is important to me When I was young, I didn’t have much of family life We four kids were quite close in ages

so that helped enormously, but we didn’t see much of our parents In fact, we saw more of granny and grandpa as they lived with us, but they were a bit strict We all

Trang 2

got on and we knew that our parents cared for us But there wasn’t much in the way

of trips, treats, things that nowadays people take for granted

UNIT 2: CULTURAL DIVERSITY

A READING Unit 2 trang 14 SBT

Part 1 Read the passage and complete the table that follows

[ Đọc bài và hoàn thành bảng sau]

There are questions from a cross-cultural workshop which helps business people to avoid misunderstandings when they deal with people who come from different cultures Ideas about polite behaviour vary from one culture to another and it’s easy

to cause offence, or feel offended, if you don’t know what other cultures expect Some societies, such as America and Australia, for example, are mobile and very open People here change jobs and move house quite frequently As a result they have a lot of relationships that often last only a short time, and they need to get to know people quickly So it’s normal to have friendly conversations with people that they have just met, and you can talk about things that other cultures would regard as private

At the other extreme are more crowded and less mobile societies where long-term relationships are more important A Malaysian or Mexican business person, for example, will want to get to know you very well before he or she feels happy to start business But when you do get to know each other, the relationship becomes much deeper than it would in a mobile society

To Americans, both Europeans and Asians seem cool and formal at first On the other hand, as a passenger from a less mobile society put it, it’s no fun spending several hours next to a stranger who wants to tell you all about his or her life and asks you all sorts of embarrassing questions that you don’t want to answer

Cross-cultural differences aren’t just a problem for travellers, but also for the airlines that carry them All airlines want to provide the best service, but ideas about good service vary from place to place This can be seen most clearly in the way that problems are dealt with

Some societies have ‘universalist’ cultures These societies have a strong respect for rules, and they treat every person and situation in basically the same way

‘Particularist’ societies, on the other hand, also have rules, but they are less important than the society’s unwritten ideas about what is right or wrong for a particular situation or a particular person So the formal rules are bent to fit the needs of the situation or the importance of the person

Trang 15

This difference can cause problems A traveller from a particularist society, India, is checking in for a flight in Germany, a country which has a universalist culture The Indian traveller has too much luggage, but he explains that he has been away from home for a long time and the suitcases are full of presents for his family He expects that the check-in clerk will understand his problem and will bend the rules for him The check-in clerk, however, expects that if she explains the rules, the customer will understand If he was allowed to have too much luggage, it wouldn’t be fair to the other passengers But the traveller thinks this is unfair, because the other passengers don’t have his problem

UNIT 3: WAYS OF SOCIALISING

A READING unit 3 trang 22

Part 1 Read the passage and circle the best answer A, B, C, or D

[ Đọc bài và khoanh tròn A, B, C, D]

Let children learn to judge their own work A child learning to talk does not learn by being corrected; if corrected too much, he will stop talking He notices a thousand times a day the difference between the language he uses and the language those around him use Bit by bit, he makes the necessary changes to make his language like other people’s In the same way, children learn to do all the other things, they learn to do them without being taught - to talk, run, climb, whistle, ride

a bike - compare their own performances with those of more skilled people, and slowly make the needed changes But in school we never give a child a chance to find out his mistakes for himself, let alone correct them We do it all for him We act

as if we thought that he would never notice a mistake unless it was pointed out to him, or correct it unless he was made to Soon he becomes dependent on the teacher Let him do it himself Let him work out, with the help of other children if he wants

it, “what this word says, what the answer is to that problem, whether this is a good way of saying or doing this or not.”

If it is a matter of right answer, as it may be in mathematics or science, give him the answer book Let him correct his own papers Why should we teachers waste time on such routine work? Our job should be to help the child when he tells us that

he can’t find the way to get the right answer Let’s end all the nonsense of grades, exams, and marks Let us throw them all out and let the children learn all educated persons must some days learn, how to measure their own understanding, how to know what they know or do not know

Let them get on with this job in the way that seems most sensible to them, with our help as school teachers if they ask for it The idea that there is a body of knowledge to be learnt at school and used for the rest of one’s life is nonsense in a world as complicated and rapidly changing as ours Anxious parents and teachers say, “But suppose they fail to learn something essential, something they will need to get on in the world?” Don’t worry If it is essential, they will go out into the world and learn it

1 According to the author, the best way for children to learn things is _

Trang 29

A by comparing with what other people do

B by making mistakes and having them corrected

C by listening to explanations from skilled people

D by asking a great many questions

2 What does the author think teachers do what they should not do?

A They give children correct answers

B They point out children’s mistakes to them

C They allow children to mark their own work

D They encourage children to copy from one another

3 The passage suggests that learning to speak and learning to ride a bicycle are

A not really important skills

B more important than other skills

C basically different from learning adult skills

D basically the same as learning other skills

4 Exams, grades, and marks should be abolished because children’s progress should only be estimated by

A educated persons C teachers

B the children themselves D parents

5 The author fears that children will grow up into adults who are _

A too independent of others

B too critical of themselves

C unable to think for themselves

D unable to use basic skills

Trang 30

Part 2 Read the passage and decide whether the statements are true (T) or false (F)

It is difficult to write rules that tell exactly when we should apologize, but it is not difficult to learn how If we have done something to hurt someone’s feelings, or

if we have been impolite or rude, we should apologize An apology indicates that we realize we have made a mistake, and we are sorry for it It is a way of expressing our

Trang 31

regret for something When we apologize, we admit our wrongdoing, usually offer

a reason for it, and express regret

The simplest way to apologize is to say “I’m sorry”, but often that is not enough Let’s take a common situation Mario is late for class and enters the classroom, interrupting the teacher in the middle of the lesson What does he do? The most polite action is usually to take a seat as quietly as possible and apologize later But

if the teacher stops and waits for him to say something, he could apologize simply

“I’m sorry I’m late”, ask permission to take his seat, and sit down Naturally, more than this – a reason for the tardiness – is needed, but this is not the time or the place for it because he has already caused one interruption and doesn’t need to make it any longer or worse than it already is

After class, when he can speak to the teacher privately, Mario can apologize again, this time giving his excuse He might say, “Mr Blair, I’m sorry I was late for class this morning I overslept and missed the bus” When we give an excuse to the person to whom we are apologizing, we are admitting responsibility After the excuse there sometimes comes a promise to change, improve, or not to let the action happen again For example, after Mario gives the reason for his tardiness, he might add, “I won’t let it happen again” or “I promise I’ll be on time from now on.”

Questions

1 We can write rules that tell us exactly when we should apologize

2 When we apologize, we offer a reason for it, and express regret

3 It is enough to say “I’m sorry” when we apologize

4 In Mario’s case, the most polite way is to take a seat and apologize later

5 According to the passage, there usually comes a promise

và bày tỏ hối tiếc

Trang 32

UNIT 4: SCHOOL EDUCATION SYSTEM

A READING unit 4 trang 30

Part 1 Read the following passage and then do the exercises that follow

Most schools in the United States start at the kindergarten level There are some school districts that do not have this beginning phase, and others which have an additional “preschool” one There are almost always required subjects at each level

In some areas and at more advanced levels, the students can choose some subjects Pupils who do not do well often have to repeat courses, or have to have special tutoring, usually done in and by the schools Many schools also support summer classes, where students can make up for failed courses or even take extra courses

In addition to bilingual and bicultural education programmes, many schools have special programmes for those with learning and reading difficulties These and other programmes repeat the emphasis of American education on trying to increase equality of opportunity They also attempt to integrate students with varying abilities and backgrounds into an educational system shared by all At the same time, many high school students are given special advanced coursework in mathematics and natural sciences Nationwide talent searches for minority group children with special abilities and academic promise began on a large scale in the 1960s These programmes have helped to bring more minority children into advanced levels of university education and into the professions

Like schools in Britain and other English speaking countries, those in the U.S have also always stressed “character” or “social skills” through extracurricular activities, including organised sports Because most schools start at around 8 o’clock every morning and classes do not often finish until 3 or 4 o’clock in the afternoon, such

Trang 40

activities mean that many students do not return home until the early evening There

is usually a very broad range of extracurricular activities available Most schools, for instance, publish their own student newspapers, and some have their own radio stations Almost all have student orchestras, bands, and choirs

Many different sports are also available and most schools share their facilities - swimming pools, tennis courts, tracks, and stadiums - with the public Often the students themselves organise and support school activities and raise money through car washes, baby-sitting, or by mowing lawns Parents and local business often also help a group that, for example, has a chance to go to a state music competition, to compete in some sports championship, or take a camping trip Such activities not only give pupils a chance to be together outside normal classes, they also help develop a feeling of “school spirit” among the students and in the community
