LISTENING TEST
There will be a short listening test of about 20 minutes This will be played through the
school’s IT network via speakers All candidates, therefore, will hear the same recording
This recording will comprise a short listening exercise and a final section based on following
the instructions heard in the recording
ENGLISH TEST
Time allowed: 45 minutes
The English paper is in two sections
Section A is a test of comprehension Pupils should expect to answer questions on unseen
information The questions will invite pupils to recall and reflect on the information as a
whole
Section B is a test of writing Credit will be given for good spelling, punctuation and
paragraphing as well as imaginative and exciting use of vocabulary Irrelevant answers or
pre-learnt sentences will be penalised
REASONING TEST
This might comprise verbal or non-verbal questions or a combination of the two

Time allowed: 45 minutes
The test is based on the Year 2 National Curriculum syllabus, however, there will be some extension questions to challenge the able boys

ENGLISH TEST
Time allowed: 50 minutes
The English paper is in two sections
Section A is a test of comprehension Pupils should expect to answer questions on a
passage of fiction The questions will invite pupils to recall information, draw inferences
and evaluate a writer’s use of language
Section B is a test of writing Pupils should expect to write clearly, fluently and accurately
on one (or more) composition tasks Irrelevant answers or pre-learnt sentences will be
penalised

MATHEMATICS TEST
Time allowed: 45 minutes
The test is based on the Year 4 National Curriculum syllabus, however, there will be some extension questions to challenge the able boys
Harder questions from Group B plus the following:
• Read, write and order whole numbers up to 100,000
• Know by heart all multiplication facts up to 12 x 12
• Column addition and subtraction of two whole numbers less than 10,000
• Short multiplication of hundreds/tens/units by units
• Short division of hundreds/tens/units by units
• Multiplication and division of whole numbers by powers of 10
• Round any four-digit number to the nearest 10, 100 or 1000
• Extend number sequences
• Recognise negative numbers and perform simple calculations with negative numbers
• Fractions and decimals: recognise equivalence between simple fractions and decimals Order simple fractions Find fractions of numbers and quantities Place value for tenths and hundredths
• Metric system (length and mass)
• Area and perimeter of rectangles and other simple shapes
• Read scales to the nearest division
• Read the time from clocks - conversion between 12 hour and 24 hour clock
• Solve simple problems involving ratio and proportion
• Reflect a 2d shape in a mirror line
• Recognise positions and directions and use co-ordinates
