1 Analogy (n.): a comparison used to explain an idea, link, connection.
In his book, the scientist used an analogy comparing the human brain to a computer
2 Travesty (n.): a distortion, mockery, misrepresentation, poor imitation
Anna’s production of ‘Oliver Twist’ was a travesty , as her changes to the story ruined the original play
3 Nocturnal (adj.): being active at night, relating to night, nightly, after dark Bats are nocturnal creatures, tending to sleep in the day and hunt by night.
4 Perceptible (adj.): when something can be seen or noticed, noticeable, visible There has been a perceptible change in the recipe of Cadbury’s chocolate recently; some people say the flavour is quite different to before.
5 Chameleon (n.): a lizard that changes colour to blend in with its surroundings; a person who changes their behaviour according to the situation
As a predator approached, the chameleon turned green to blend in with the trees
6 Emphasis (n.): importance, significance, prominence; the stress given to a word
or words when speaking
The English teacher put great emphasis on reading because she knew it would help us with our vocabulary and understanding
7 Immune (adj.): to be protected against or resistant to a disease; unaffected, unconcerned by something

8 Academic (adj.): related to education and study, educational, intellectual.
Ben preferred academic hobbies such as crosswords and chess to playing sport.
9 Genuine (adj.): real, true, actual, authentic

10 Regime (n.): the authorities, system (eg of government), organisation; way or programme of doing things
