2 Uncompleted tasks (both inside and outside specialisation):
None I tried my best to complete all the tasks assigned to me Because the company assigned tasks related to my specialised field of study, most of these jobs were met although not by ease due to the relatively high workload
3 Lessons learned
3.1 Concerning knowledge
Trang 8During my internship at Thanh Yen Co Ltd, I got a great deal of knowledge not only in my major which is interpretation but also in translation and communication skills
To be more specific, in interpretation, I feel like the knowledge I learned here
is new but, at the same time, not new to me This is because I have learned this knowledge at university but that was the first time I had opportunities to carry out the consecutive interpretation myself and see all of the knowledge I had learned at university applied in real life In specific, I could see the definition
of interpretation, the techniques used in interpretation applied in actual situations Moreover, I can realise the important role of the interpreter and see how the concept of work ethics that I have learned so far In general, I have witnessed all of the knowledge I learned at university applied in real life In addition, as I can feel how meaningful this internship is, I did try my best to complete all of the tasks assigned to me and I did succeed in meeting most of the deadlines while the quality of my interpretation is assured
Beside interpretation, I also translated a lot of documents including contracts, business emails, products’ labels, information to post on the company’s website, etc All the jobs required a lot of research about the subject and a lot
of editing In translating, I also had to make sure all of the content is kept and rendered well in both Vietnamese and English style In the past, in Translation classes, those were the things that I learned from the teacher Therefore, once again, I had chances to apply all of the knowledge I had learned at university
in these tasks
In addition, I also learned a lot about business works and how a limited company runs On the first day, I read a lot about the company so I did equip myself with good preparation before starting the job After that, through translating and interpreting, I continued to learn about all of the works in a company
3.2 Concerning skills
My internship at Thanh Yen Co Ltd has helped me a lot in improving my interpretation skills, translation skills and other soft skills needed at work Firstly, I got the necessary skills in interpretation which includes listening skills, speaking skills, note-taking skills, paraphrasing skills, memorising skills and so on As the characteristics of the job is meeting many foreigners, I had chances to be exposed to an English-speaking environment Therefore, my listening and speaking skills were improved greatly Additionally, I could apply other skills such as note-taking, memorising, paraphrasing skills a lot in interpretation
Trang 9Secondly, by translating documents, I also learned skills like reading, writing and improved my grammar As doing research about the background of the text is necessary, I had to read a lot of materials in English on business field in
a short time Besides, my writing skills was also improved as I rendered the text into Vietnamese as well as English I also improved a lot by spending time working on the English grammar that I used in my translation
Thirdly, I learned many other skills needed for work such as computer skills and communication skills I also made sure to maintain good relations with the staff there and made sure that we understand and collaborate well with each other Therefore, I also focus on improving my communication skills not only with the company’s staff but also foreign partners and clients
3.3 Concerning character, attitude, manner of an intern
Concerning character, I always reminded myself that I had to maintain a good character both in my job and in the working environment It is very easy for interpreters and translators to lose their work ethics because of various reasons such as deadline pressure or the difficulties of the job I can feel all of the temptations of choosing a shortcut when you just interpret or translate in order
to get it done whatever the quality is However, I know that this internship is a very important step of my career, if I gave up and made way for deception in
my profession, I would set a bad example for the rest of my career Therefore,
I was really determined to keep up the good work and maintain my work ethics This is a precious lesson that I have learned and I am sure to keep it in mind for my future work
In terms of attitude, I learned that I always had to have good attitude at work
by being willing to learn from the seniors, being truthful, accepting mistakes and trying to improve on that It was lucky for me to work under a seasoned supervisor He pointed out my mistakes and shared with me a lot of his work experience I felt like everything was in my favour when I received such a great help With all of that, it would be a waste if I did not have a good attitude However, I think I have to keep this open attitude not only in favourable conditions like this but also in more disadvantaged conditions as the better my attitude is, the more I could learn and improve
Concerning manner, as I deemed the internship as a valuable chance for me to experience the actual working environment, I tried to notice everything I did and manner was not an exception to this I tried to observe the working manners of the staff there and realise that although the working environment is open, it is not a place for disorganisation and unprofessionalism Everyone there was on time and fully focused on their work Although they emphasised the result of the work more than how they do it, everyone was serious because they know that nothing could be done by ease
Trang 10III Self-evaluation and recommendations
1 Self-evaluation
1.1 Concerning specialised knowledge
I know that having good knowledge is not enough but more important is to apply it into real life situations Thus, during my internship, I have tried to use and apply the knowledge in interpretation and translation that I learned at university into reality in an effective way To be specific, although there are some hesitation and worries in my first time doing the interpretation and translation, I told myself to stay calm and always look at the criteria of a good interpretation and translation work that I learned at university to work on the tasks step by step and thus my performance has gradually improved For example, when I translated first text, I focused on the content first and concentrated on the style later But then, in the second text, I tried to combine those two elements at one time at a low speed and day by day improved this speed while still keeping the good quality of the translation The same applied
to my interpretation works when I gradually integrating each skill into my performance If it was not for the fact that I had a strong base of knowledge in interpretation and translation, such a sensible plan could not have worked effectively
1.2 Concerning skills
Concerning skills, because I had several practices in class before, the only thing I have to do is to apply those skills into practice by following the plan However, things were not always easy for me Although I have already had good skills in interpretation and translation reflected in my good performance
in class, in reality, such performance is subject to change because of the deadline pressure, the difficulty of the task and the unfamiliarity of the topic Therefore, during this time, I had to keep up my good work with the existence
of all of disadvantageous elements in the real working environment For example, when I interpreted in a meeting, sometimes there were a lot of noises which distracted me from listening to both sides but I tried to focus and asked for repetition if necessary and I got positive results By hard work, my skills gradually improved and became sharper and sharper
1.3 Concerning character, attitude and manner
Regarding character, I paid great attention to the work ethics and the good character in the working place At work, I always tried to meet the deadline while assuring the quality of my work
Moreover, I knew that I was there to learn so I always had an open-minded attitude, always willing to learn and accepting mistakes In addition to good attitude at work, I tried to make conversations and was respectful to the staff
