Trang 3THE HONORABLE JOHN REID EDWARDS
Born in South Carolina, John Edwards grew up in Robbins, North Carolina, the state he represented in the United States Senate until January
of this year His father worked in textile mills; his mother ran a shop and worked at the post office John Edwards was the first person in his family
to go to college He paid his way through North Carolina State University, graduating with high honors in 1974 He then earned a J.D with honors in
1977 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
John met his wife, Elizabeth Anania, while both were law students
at UNC The Saturday after taking the bar exam, they were married and then had a two-day honeymoon in Williamsburg
The Edwards have four children Their oldest son, Wade, died in
1996 His parents were instrumental in creating educational opportunities for others: the Wade Edwards Foundation (for college scholarships) and Wade Edwards Learning Labs (to give youngsters after-school access to computers and technology tutoring)
After an extraordinarily successful career as a trial lawyer, John Edwards sought public office in 1998, as he and his son Wade had discussed his possibly doing He was elected to the United States Senate during his first foray into elective politics, defeating an incumbent In the Senate, he focused on health care, schools, civil liberties, Social Security and Medicare, and campaign finance reform A member of the Select Committee on Intelligence, he also worked on defense and homeland security, authoring legislation on cyber, bio and port security Senator Edwards was the Democratic candidate for Vice President in 2004
John Edwards was recently named a part-time law professor at Chapel Hill, where he will lead a new Center on Poverty, Work and Opportunity
