The garment technical school
This is the garment technical school It was established in 1970 Its main specialties are dress design and clothing technology It is one of the most famous garment technical schools in our country
The school is very large There are one thousand three hundred students, and one hundred and fifty staff members
There are 30 classes in the school Usually, the students study for 3 years In the first and the second years, they have theoretical lessons on Chinese, English , art , garment material, fashion drawing , … In the third year, they have practice lessons They learn how to cut and sew clothing

How to choose ready –made clothes
A CONVERSATION
Clerk : Good morning May I help you?

Customer : Some of my clothes are dirty I don’t know how to clean them
Clerk : OK Can you show me how dirty they are?
Customer : Yes Look, this pair of trousers and that jacket are a bit dirty And there
are some paint stains on this dress Clerk : I see You’d better have the trousers washed , because they are made
of a kind of synthetic fabric However , for the pure wool jacket , it would be better to have it dry cleaned otherwise it will shrink from washing

1 Dress making as a pastime
Dress making as a traditional; pastime Before the professional tailor came , every housewife was making dress for the members of her family The needle craft is one of the most ancient ones But with the advance of the time, dress making has become very sophisticated
Basically, cotton, wool , and silk were the materials But nowadays synthetic materials are good contenders and are trying to push out cotton and silk Weaving and the synthetic colors are adding to the variety Then the sewing machine has made dress making quick and easy Fancy stitching has become possible Embroidering which was once the preserve of the women has been taken up by the machine
There is a lot of aesthetics that go into the making of a dress Each country has its own peculiar dress, for example Kimono of the Japanese has become world famous Taste changes with generation What was once fashionable in Victorian England is no more so Men’s, women’s, and children‘s dresses have undergone a change

Do ‚ window shop ‘ before you buy Compare prices at several shops before you finally make a decision Feel the quality of fabric and inspect the finish of the garment A well made garment will have :

One morning last year, Ann stopped outside a Fashion Shop and looked into the window She gazed at a tartan overcoat on display ‚ The style and the material are exactly what I want ‚, she said to herself So she went into the shop
She asked the shop assistant to show her one in her size Unfortunately , it did not fit her It was too loose around the bust and the sleeves were a little too short So the shop assistant suggested her ordering one from the shop
A tailor came up to take her measurements He measured her coat length , bust , shoulder , collar , and sleeve After measuring , he gave her a receipt and said , ‚ you can call in tomorrow for a fitting , then collect your overcoat next week ‚ One week later , Ann got her new tartan overcoat It fitted her well She was very happy

Measurement taking
Sequence of measurement taking :
(1) bust
Place the tape around the fullest part of the bust The tape must be horizontal
at the back This measurement must not be taken tightly
(2) waist
Tie a cord around the waist and let it settle at the narrowest part Take this measurement firmly

(4) Across the back
Approximately 10.5 down from the nape of the neck Use the armhole seams

Translate the passage “How to press garments” into Vietnamese
Here are some points to help you when pressing :
a Garment are usually pressed on the wrong side but pleats and trousers are pressed on the right side
b Adjust the pressure and heat of the iron to suit the weight of the fabric Thin fabrics need little pressure , while heavier fabrics need more pressure
c Do not dampen the garment Only dampen the pressing cloth
d Press at each stage in dressmaking Press hems and edges before stitching Press darts , armhole seams and openings
e Skirt, coat and dress seams should be pressed downwards
f Napped fabrics should be pressed in the direction of the nap
g Use a cool iron when pressing synthetic fabrics
h Always press a sample of the fabric before pressing the whole garment
