AMERICA, THE BEAUTIFUL
(“O Beautiful for Spacious Skies”)
Music written by Samuel A Ward (1847–1903)
Words written by Katharine Lee Bates (1859–1929)
Selected stanzas
In 1893, Katharine Lee Bates was a visiting professor of English literature in Colorado College’s Summer Session Bates and a group of faculty members traveled by prairie wagon and mules to the summit of Pikes Peak There, inspired by the magnificent panorama, the poet conceived the initial verses of
“America, the Beautiful.” It was published in 1895 to national acclaim.
O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain
America! America!
God shed His grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea.
O beautiful for pilgrim feet Whose stern impassioned stress
A thoroughfare for freedom beat Across the wilderness.
America! America!
God mend thine every flaw, Confirm thy soul in self-control, Thy liberty in law.
